Grimes has admitted to making her vocal pitch higher in the studio. This is a reason she doesn’t hit those notes live. Not to mention singing the way she does on her albums can be quite exhausting. Mostly when her vocals are that high.
@marixcx
@marixcx 5 жыл бұрын
The Elder Grimes does have a pretty impressive range, it’s just that she doesn’t have enough vocal training to be able to support some of them. She has improved in recent years though.
@dankmheems290
@dankmheems290 4 жыл бұрын
She originally used a lot of reverb and delay on her microphones to carry that voice in the early years. Somedays she has good vocal days, sometimes not, but she's really an engineer and a performer not the vocalist, she always layers her voice to make a texture which is hard to reproduce live.. Which is why she uses her voice as an instrument and hires back up aka HANA.

@@masterpiecelacquers2766 - As an ol' school multi-instrumentalist I get where you are coming from, though I wonder what you are pushing back on. If you are trying to preserve a common recognition of what distinguishes the performance of music on traditional instruments from some guy on stage in front of fifty thousand fans who (let's face it) is more or less just pressing play on their iPod, then you have your work cut out for you. But when I stumbled into my first rave some 30 yrs ago I quickly realized that it was MY definition of music that was inadequate. The way the people in that warehouse defined music was infinitely more than adequate. Music, like all art, lies ALWAYS in the heart of the beholder. Artists must resist the temptation to believe that they have created the music when what they have in fact created, however artfully, are conditions and settings that are better suited for the emergence of the muses from within their audience.

Coming to her concerts is for you to experience the vibe she has with each song. How she makes it. Since she loves to do it layer by layer live. It's experiencing the C we love, recreating her song. 💖 It's such an awesome experience imagining this is how her mind goes while she's making the song in her own room. One thing I love about her art- raw, free, confident and non-conforming. Pure self-expression.

She's one of those few artists that are truly incredible in the studio but the work doesn't really translate the same way live. There's nothing wrong with that though I could name a few artists that barely play anything on a particular album because the amount of production elements and treatments on some of the instrumentation is hard to replicate live and I think the same thing probably applies to her work.

Unfortunately she is making huge excuses for her inability to perform live by trying to say "live music is dying" because the studio tricks arent entirely available in live performances or when they are used its completely obvious. Use of vocal processors, almost all of the music is prerecorded and she uses backing vocal tracks of herself to make her thin voice carry live. Live music should be able to morph on the fly to add an edge of unpredictability which with her is entirely lacking. It's like watching a dance recital with a cd player as the music.

@somekid7
@somekid7 5 жыл бұрын
Statistically, live music's not dying; it's actually the opposite. You can thank millennials and zoomers for increased concert attendance. To be fair, Grimes wasn't saying anything about the state of current live music. She was saying that AI will soon create art better than humans and that it will be the end of an era. Who knows? She could be right, but so far, the music that's been created by AI can't compete at all. A lot of people say it sucks, just like how some people taught AI to write stories after feeding it a bunch of text. Grimes could be right but she shot herself in the foot by talking like there was no doubt about it. For all we know, the world could end in nuclear war before AI even advances to the level of singularity. The exponential advancement of technology could plateau soon too. But hey who knows? It's all just speculation. The lesson here is to not act so cocksure and talk like you're 100% sure all the time. Or maybe if you wanna promote your upcoming album and you don't care about bad press, then yeah go for it. Personally I don't think she was that strategic and was probably under the influence of something when she posted those tweets.

What I see when I look at this: a nerdy young woman who just happens to have a talent for producing pop music, and to be really cute, living the fantasy of being a Rock Star, but also having to let the audience know that she's way too smart to believe in it.

It's pretty smart what she's been doing over here. What people don't like is that she's a bit arrogant like "i come from a rich background, i can do whatever i want to because of that" But everyone wants to to whatever they want, that's why they find this appealing, they just don't want to admit it. She's also being very attractive and confident in this performance. The song is pretty ambitious and she's not living up to the musical part recorded in the studio. Instead she gives a unique performance as a trade-off. It's a bit childish the whole thing, but pretty smart and also cool.
