Fabulous first video! I can sympathize with you on going into The Silver Needle and coming out with way more than you intended and also for that store contributing to multiple unfinished projects 😁😁. It’s better than Disneyworld!!! Kudos to you for stitching, crocheting, quilting, and building doll houses. Clearly the people that call you weird cannot possibly understand the enjoyment we get from our hobbies. You sound like you have an old soul, just like my daughter, who is 24 and has always gotten much joy from crocheting, stitching, making clay statues, braiding friendship bracelets, sewing, etc. and continues stitching and crocheting today. As a former middle school teacher, I fully believe that if we could get more children interested in hobbies and crafts like this, they would struggle far less in life than they do and would he much happier. It is fantastic that you can be a role model for them and demonstrate that being your own person or doing something different is awesome!!

Great job Mattie and welcome to this wonderful community of flossies! I'm so happy you've found cross stitch. I am 65 and have stitched since my 20's and my mom taught me how to do needlework and sew when I was about 5! I love that you're taking up quilting! And the project bags! How fun! I haven't made one yet but there's lots of videos to help you! Vonna Pfieffer is the BEST teacher!! She does and envelope bag which is super easy! I LOVE that you are making doll houses! 123Stitch has some doll house supplies. I don't know what I was looking for but found a blue spatterware set of a coffee pot and 4 cups! It's in my cart. So go look!!

Mattie, there's so much I want to say to you, but the 'sroke limit' won't let me.... 😆! To begin with, thank you for your honesty and "putting yourself out there" for us cross stitch and crafting individuals. You're absolutely lovely and I'm sure your 'children' love you to pieces! Understand your addiction to Plum Street. So do I, as well as Blackbird, Kathy Barrett, Hawk Run anything (all the patterns none started), Barbara Ana, Erica Michaels, and on and on. You mentioned tactile....just watch some of the Flosstubers talk about patting their fabric and stroking their threads... absolute bliss. Ripping out is part of the game, stitchers of 20 and 30+ years make mistakes. It is what it is. Loved your crochet blanket not to mention your 'quilt as you go' quilt. Love your choice of colors. I would take my quilting pieces to work and layer my top, batting and backing on the office meeting table at lunchtime. Worked great. Would love to see one of your houses. Look at you...over 800 subscribers and so many views. Looking forward to #2...stay as sweet as you are. Oh, lovely 🏠🏡

Mattie, I feel like you are a kindred spirit! I'm 22 and live in Sydney, Australia. I have a love for all things "old-fashioned". I recently started cross-stitching but have been collecting vintage bits and pieces and longingly looked at antiques and old houses forever! Loved watching your video and seeing your pieces!

Yes! Welcome to the FlossTube community. You’re in good company. We’re not weird, we’re needlewomen and artists! A really great first video, and I’m looking forward to more. Please, share ALL your artistic endeavors. If there isn’t a large show and tell crochet community, be the leader! Also, thank you for sharing a bit of your professional world. Everyone needs to remember, understand and appreciate the world of our formative young people. They will be who is taking care of us in a few short years. 😎

As someone who has been crafting for over 50 years, I can so relate to your journey in this world. I built dollhouses for 20 years or so and specialized in wiring (which has changed a lot since I did it). And now I mostly crochet, quilt, and cross stitch (though I'm still a beginner in quilts). One never stops learning a craft. But the journey is such fun! Idoknow of a dollhouse group on Facebook that might help you, and Pat Sloan has great videos here for quilting. She also has written several books and patterns so check her website too. Good luck and have fun!

New subscriber here! :-) You had me in the first 5 minutes. You are the only flosstuber who has mentioned dollhouses and I just knew I would have to stick around to see your work on the run-down Victorian. :-) I certainly agree with you about the HAED's--they are quite an investment in time. You are not weird--you have a gift that not everyone has. Use it, display it, and then take the compliments. :-) Yes, you will one day have one of those walls covered with cross stitch. Loved your project choices, and enjoyed seeing your crochet, quilting, and look forward to photos of your dollhouse. Thanks.

I would highly recommend two flossies: Olivia from Pumpkin Hollow quilts, she cross stitches too and does her quilts at the end of each video. And secondly, Kate at The Last Homely House (in Northumberland). Kate does lots of very straightforward easy quilting and a ton of English paper piecing. Both do beautiful work but Kate demonstrates. Now she does tons of everything from gardening, sewing, cooking, canning, chickens and a goose and four cats! She is my age 65 so we are like sisters, a grandmother to you1❣ So find her then pick through the videos to see what you want to learn. Both Olivia and Kate are going into their 4th year, so tons of videos to choose from!! Enjoy❣ Your blanket is beautiful! I loom knit because I'm awful with tension, knitting with needles!

I also have one that I started for my daughter and never finished it, so I should get that done for her two daughters. Please show pictures of yours if you get a chance. Your stitching and quilting are lovely. I started with the quilt as you go method too. Flannel sheets make great backings as well. Love Plum Street…they have great stuff.

Dollhouses!!! OMG that’s amazing!! I am so here for it!! I’ve always wanted to build one but have no freaking clue where to start!! Girl!! You are a brave soul to jump in head first with a HAED as a beginner !! You are so right about the feeling you get walking into a LNS!! There is nothing like it… seeing all the finishes is like love at first sight over and over again!! (I’m so dramatic huh? Haha) My LNS is Acorns & Threads in Portland…it’s absolutely heavenly!! And the ladies there are super friendly… you should come visit!! I’m also addicted to Plum Street… I keep buying them but not stitching them fast enough.. your Prudence is gorgeous… I really dig using that as a reference for your kids… that’s a great idea… also, Huge Kudos to you for doing what you do!! That is such an important age developmentally for kids.. they really need strong role models at that stage… Your video was great! I’ll be a full time viewer fo’ sho’!! Lol

I loved this, hearing how you began. Sharing that beautiful needlework with that phrase about privacy and sharing thoughtfully may save a youngster's tender heart. We were very intentional about teaching our own high schoolers and college age kids to be discreet, particularly with social media as well as casual friends. So far they've taken it to heart and have a social media presence that their families (and bosses, future in-laws, neighbors) can view with pleasure rather than dismay. I love the context for that piece!

What a great job on your first video! I’m a new stitcher too and don’t know anyone that does counted cross stitch. I’m just learning as I go. Thank goodness for flosstube! It didn’t take long to realize how expensive framing can be. So I watched a tutorial by Elizabeth Ann can stitch and I started looking for frames at yard sales, consignment shops, auctions….. it’s like a treasure hunt! I just framed Mighty Oak by blackbird design in a .50 frame from a yard sale. Everyone loved it! It’s an expensive way to get those beautiful pieces displayed.

Maddie... you did fantastic!! I also taught middle schoolers... its a calling. lol I taught middle school math and science for over 20 years. Welcome to flosstube! I look forward to all your upcoming videos. I also quilt as well. When I have done QAL's I had the backing and the batting. It is an interesting way to do them without the backing until later, hmmmm....now you have me thinking. You can use sheets. just make sure you are using 100% cotton on the back as well as your quilt store 100% that you have on the quilt rack. Cotton does shrink and you want it all to shrink at the same rate. Your string quilt top looks really good. I was a lot like you in my younger days with the same hobbies and can relate to the 'old lady" feeling... but fear not, you are only as young as you think you are... hell, I am still 25! lol Take care.. I definitely subscribed today,,

Love your flosstube! I also crochet just for the way to keep my hands busy and avoid the munchies. Hope to see your progress on all your projects!

You did a great job on the video, and are very talented!! I quilt (many years now) & am a beginner with crochet as well. Love your choices for Jane Austin. You might want to check out the pattern Jacob de Graaf created (modern folk embroidery), of course I don’t think he’s created a pattern I don’t love. Daisy Farm Crafts have great crochet videos& patterns. And, you can buy 108” wide backing fabric for quilts.

Love that you are from OK! I'm around OKC metro. Also work in a middle school (they are the best!) And currently in grad school for school counseling haha. Relate on feeling "old" but this is such a relaxing craft. Glad I found your channel ❤️

Great first FlossTube! I picked up stitching again last year after quilting stooped being a joy for me. I also went back to knitting. I still quilt as I have lots of projects to finish but stitching is more relaxing for me. Look forward to your next visit!
