Love Yaya’s sampler! A new family heirloom ❤️ I too was away from flosstube for August and into September, still stitching but away from home and am now very behind watching my favorites. But your trips sound wonderful and glad you both had special times. Thanks for commenting on my Elizabeth’s Fall Basket, Anna. That is going to be my October focus piece, hopefully for a finish. The exhibit in DC at the DAR museum looked fabulous. Going to seek out that museum next time i am in DC visiting my daughter.

Hello Ladies. I’m a first time viewer and very recently joined the cross stitch community after a 20 year plus hiatus. When I became a quilter. Watching new to me cross stitch videos has really helped, things have changed over the years and I’ve picked up some great tips. . I’m also a knitter, I really enjoyed watching you both and seeing all your projects. I have subscribed. Maree 🇦🇺❤❤

Welcome, Maree! Thanks for introducing yourself! Carolyn was new to cross stitching in 2020. I used to cross stitch in the 80's and came back to it in 2020 (influenced by Carolyn's enjoyment of it). I think it's amazing how many resources there are now. Happy Crafting! -Anna

I was so happy to see a new episode! I found you a few months ago and have binged watched every episode ❤️. Thank you for all the learning I have been doing with you - great stuff. Welcome back! You were missed! I love the "buttons" and I love the idea of finishing them as magnets. Knitting designs have found their way into quilts so it seems natural that knitting designs would also migrate into crossstitch. I love the idea of using those mitten designs in a band sampler. Oh, so much fun! Welcome back from a well deserved vacation! Love your projects this week, especially the Bird Herd. I think you should call it Gramsy's Gurls and add the date and beach. Love the mitten also, especially since I just went to the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Look up Burra Bears! I tried to get one while there--no luck. My unsolicited advice for you Anna: Soak that fabric with color catchers until no more color is displaced onto the catcher. If you use that bright white silk floss, that red will transfer right onto it every time you pull the floss through that linen. . . . . in my humble opinion. Happy Stitching!!

Another great video, ladies, and it's so good to see you both back together. Anna, I love your beautiful white tunic top exactly the way it is and I would not stitch on it, instead I would perhaps add a nice long pendant, such as a lovely turquoise pendent on a long leather string as that would make it look so summery. A nice amber or quartz pendent would look great in the fall. Or you don't need to add anything at all as it looks so beautiful just plain.

RE: pre-washing: I'm a quilter. I pre-wash ALL my fabric before I use it for a quilt. Even so, I've had the occasional problem with fabric dye "running" -- especially reds. Blue can also be a challenge. I have washed those single colours in "Retayne" to set the dye before I use them -- or even after they've been washed, used and put in a quilt. Saves a lot of heart-ache. I use mainly neutral fabrics for stitching, and haven't had occasion to wash stitching (much) -- just the odd 'spot' with a Q-tip -- but I have known people to pre-wash both red floss and red yarn before using in a stitched or knitted project. P.S. Anna -- about your top. I would think that a series of motifs around the yoke would resemble those on a Fair Isle-yoked sweater...just a thought.
@we.are.curiouscrafters

So much to comment on! First- In Stitches is my LNS! It’s only 10 miles from my house and it’s close to Wegmans where I do my grocery shopping and it’s near Huntley Meadows, a wonderful wetlands park - so I can do a little hike with a little birding, then stop in at In Stitches and then head to Wegmans. Also, next time you’re in the DC area, check out fibre space, a wonderful yarn shop in Old Town Alexandria - there’s a great frozen custard shop a block away - it’s not soft serve, but it’s pretty amazing. I love the idea of using Selbu and Fair Isle patterns for cross stitch. So many of the motifs are so similar - the flowers and the snowflakes. When I switched from cross stitch to knitting, I found the concept of charts and symbols so easy to grasp after working with cross stitch charts. Anna, the hem stitch looks great! Carolyn, I love the sweater!

I got yarn for a sweater for my granddaughter there. I enjoy going to Old Town when I'm in town - I can take the Metro there and I like visiting Stitch Sew Shop and Penny Post (in addition to Fibre Space). I did not know about the frozen custard place! Thank you! Can't wait to see where Carolyn takes her exploration of knitting motifs in cross stitch! Happy Crafting, Trudy! -Anna

Anna, you could add some small motifs around the cuff of the sleeves and hem. Thanks for sharing. The summer went by too fast.

My agony of waiting is over. Can't wait to see what you've been up to! Anna, I think your white blouse is beautiful as it is, but those blue "buttons" are quite amazing. You could attach them with jumbo snaps perhaps? Then you could remove them for laundry. I once found a cardigan at a thrift store that had tatted/crochet covered "buttons" which were attached with snaps. Caroline, I find railroading gives the most "value for effort" with lighter shades which are more light reflective. Darker shades suck up so much light you can't really see whether the threads are lying side by side or not LOL. xoxo

Haha! Hi, Heidi! I think I am going to start by finishing the buttons. And then decide whether to make them magnets or attach them to something using snaps or velcro - we'll see how heavy they are. Interesting point about lighter shades being more reflective. Happy Crafting! -Anna

Love your new ideas and enthusiasm! Do you have a video which shows how to make your tiles?

No video about tiles yet. The tiles are laced on mat board and then backed with felt. Carolyn and I are fond of this finish! Happy Crafting, Ann! -Anna P.S. We learned to lace by watching Vonna's flat fold finish video.

I use DMC most of the time -- because a) I have a *lot* of it; and b) I can't afford a lot of silks. I'm about to stitch a new sampler on 56-count (thanks to Brenda of ..you know...) and I will be using 1 strand of DMC. And there's a large section of text that is 1 over 1. And yes, I'll just do it. The young woman who originally stitched the sampler used what she had (silk or cotton or whatever) -- and that's how I roll. I use what I have.

On my last finish of MFE Tulip Vase, I put my initials and year but matched the floss to the linen. I am pretty sure one of you talked about ghosting the initials in an earlier post.

You need to check out Avlea Folk Embroidery for fabric Florishes for your clothes, and her free tutorials on the hemstitching, etc. You are definitely interested in the things she does. She's a very lively, wonderful woman. She just published a book on patterns and finishes for usable household goods. Enjoy!

Okay, said with love, but this is kind of my personal soapbox so apologies in advance: Carolyn, you're already in Ya-ya's sampler, front and center, no matter how you choose to represent it. You charted it, you stitched it, you made choices on linen and thread that are necessarily different from the original because you're stitching in a different time, and most of all - you chose to do all of this because it meant something, to you. This is the language nit picking of an English major, but 'reproduction' is fundamentally an illusion. You would have had to copy her materials, not just the placement of her stitches. Now, that doesn't mean you have to put your own mark front and center and disrupt the design, but it's not inserting yourself to do so - you're already there. That's acknowledging an existing reality, not inserting yourself. If as women we struggle at owning what we're good at, I think we can also struggle with owning our own agency. You're a maker and this is your creation. I will now step off my soapbox.
