22-year-old Letesenbet Gidey smashed fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba’s 5,000m world record on Wednesday night in Valencia, Spain, by running 14:06.62. Gidey, running in the NN Valencia World Record Day, took down Dibaba’s 14:11.15 mark which had stood since 2008.

Her plan from the start was to run a second a lap slower per lap than record pace and then increase it a second or two after first 1500m or so. That's the reason she was a little slower in the beginning.

Yes but what if Dibaba had the lazers, the pace makers and the staged record attempt...dont get me wrong fantastic run but not amazing as the old record done under race conditions with world class runners that she had to race against too ...just like Bekeles record done under the same conditions... this was a set up timetrial...disappointing that the old records done properly are going to be taken by these type of set ups ..

@@alwaystmoza When Tiru was running her world record race she didn't have any really stronk opponents. Ok, there was Lucy Wangui but do you really believe that she could defeat Tiru with record pace? I think Tiru could have ran faster if she had prepared for the world record attemp for a long time, not only before Olympic Games. I believe she could have ran faster in Oslo if she had planned that run better and had better pacemakers (I mean not only strong like her sister Ejegayehu but more prepared for smart race with right pacing). But it was her choice, she ran super fast only once and she holded her record for long 12 years. But now Tiru is really the former world record holder and we should accept this fact. Why should we judge Letesenbet for another choice? Especially if we remember that Gidey isn't such good kicker as Dibaba and will never be like that.

A brilliant piece of sustained fast running to keep up with the required pace. She has a wonderful action for distance running. Those pace lights will definitely help lower the records for distance races on the track as athletes learn to use them. She's still young and should get stronger so I hope she'll be the first woman to break the 14min barrier.

Bekele is still the record holder for the 5000m and 10000m. The Ugandans record should not be official. He was literally handed the WR on a silver platter. Please Watch this video. ( KZbin keeps removing the link. Search for WR comparison Showdown Bekeles vs Cheptegei by The Lapras Man) It's a side by side comparison of Bekeles real WR and the NN time trial by Cheptegei. The Ugandans splits were metronomic (2:37 per KM for the whole time trial!) Why is that? Because a machine was pacing him. Those robotic wavelight technology on the track. That whole thing was staged for him precisely. Like the INEOS challenge in Vienna. Planned by NN to the millimeter. Watch the 5000m comparison too. Bekeles splits were Uneven. He had variations in his tempo. He had more in tank for sure. The thing is he ran by his heart and didn't have a whole team orchestrate and engineer a record for him. .
