I love that this video specifically shows people who are older, people who are curvy etc. It seems like most of the videos out there are made by people who are young skinny beautiful and graceful, like you can only practice flow arts if you are like that. Thankyou for showing that normal people can join in as well.

Sort of. There were only two people I wouldn't classify as the usual type of folks who do flow arts. As someone much older trying to find my flow, I look around me and all the flow artists in my area are of the same age group; young, healthy with no physical limitations, and then there's me, a 59 year old fire fan wannabe with bad knees, fibromyalgia, and degenerative arthritis who can't do what the young ones do. What is easy for them is far harder for someone with limited mobility like me. What I like about fans is that they usually only really involve my arms, which I can still move fairly well. I kept hitting myself in the face with poi so that was out as a flow even though it, too, uses mostly arm motions. LOL I like my facial bones intact. I rarely flow in public, though, because I don't fit the usual bill for a fan spinner and can't do all the tricks the usual spinner can do. I find them and the young ones who can do them so effortlessly to be intimidating.

What an amazing video to watch thankyou. Beautifully encapsulates the wonderful diversity that is the joy of flow. I came up with a cute little routine watching this vid to help engage my local scene, we have very few flow-ers and i want more people to share the freedom of flow. Breaking the ice is the hardest part for me. I love that creativity flow has endless bounds, the ripples are ever going and i appreciate it

Wonderful film. Flow Arts have been a big part of my life. I just had no name for all of the activities I learned to do. A skateboarder in my teens, I started juggling at 30. Contact juggling in my 40's. Buugeng at 60. It seems to keep me moving. Glad to put a name with it. Flow Arts. Go with the flow.

Great video, thanks for sharing - I had a realization while watching that I was introduced to flow arts when I started skateboarding in my teens, and I had never thought of it like that. Particularly when you realize there are certain 'tricks' and styles but still there are no rules, if it feels good you can do whatever you want.

I had no idea what Flowarts was, I just saw a movie with a fire dancer and went on an internet search binge. I went from fire dancing, to poi, to this. Watching this? I actually want to get involved in this. This is awesome. Very inspiring. What do you think would be a good type of flowart to get into for a beginner? Obviously I should avoid fire until I get to that skill level, but should I start with poi? Hoops? Or should I just follow whatever interests me most? Thanks for making this!

I would say follow what interests you the most. I find that poi are not so easy to learn, but that may just be me. Perhapts you like fans or the pixelwhip or leviwand? Those in my opinion are a little bit easier to learn. Also, my favorite must be rope dart, but that is also not easy :D

Very late to the party but ya never know who might be reading or if your feeling adventurous. I really enjoy hoops, theres so many ways you can move it, dont need to hula hoop it around the abdomen at all, can move any way you want with whatever size hoop you want, however many you want and almost where ever. Ive got a reallly big hula hoop and it flexs into any backseat of a car or easy over the shoulder like a bag and go.

imo finding your flow is how the martial arts were found. a lot of weapons were farm tools and are taught because farmers who used these tools all day and night for work, entertainment, and relaxing had to defend themselves. they won a battle and the winning moves are taught as the "style". but teaching styles is useless as you may be very well prepared for the situations you've practiced but unless you have found the flow in the martial art that the creator had you wont see the new moves when you need them. manipulation a short staff all day teaches you the infinitely many ways the object can be manipulated. A flow master who has perfected his craft over many many years should in theory be able to replace the stick with an arm and instinctively know how to manipulate it if the situation ever arose.

Home of Poi is a highly reputable brand. Pricey to a beginner but on the cheaper side for the standard of what your getting. If looking for beginner Poi id recommend sock poi for easiness to make, theres quite a few cheap knock offs in the general market that are good for practice, they're likely to break but mistakes are part of being a beginner so how much can you afford to potentially throw away is a good way to think about. However there is an exception in that if you go very high quality you may never need to worry, they dont make them anymore but Poi like "PodPoi" v1 or v2 are sturdy as heck, seriously borderline indestructible but not immortal. The buying world is vast and different for each country, i personally wait for the best buy for me however learning firsthand what you do and dont want/like is also an option

Are you kidding me? You cannot claim activities and art forms that have been around for thousands of years and put them under the wide and all encompassing blanket of "flow arts". You are appropriating thousands of years of culture from across the world to try and legitimize your "art form".
@nietlasse5864
@nietlasse5864 6 жыл бұрын
Calm down friend. Flow arts is just a term used for basically flowing with props ?? It doesn't show to much in this video but I don't think people will generalize their art forms and call it what? Flow arting or something. See it like this: Football is still the name for the "sport" football. And Spinning poi is still the name for the "flow art" of poi (don't practice it myself so idk if I'm naming it right) All the people in this video probably care a lot about the art they practice and I'm sure they care about the story and culture of their respective art too. Well at least I do (although the history of Orbiting only goes back around 6 years :^) )

I think it's more about making a community more accessible rather than trying to claim an eclectic of historical cultural practices. Personally I'm glad it's been given a collective term, it makes it a lot easier to network and find like minded people :)

@@adrianloganpaul4954 i think this way too. That's how I got here. I started hooping. Then I saw somewhere that somebody called it flow arts and I became interested in the term and seeing what other things it involved. I wouldn't have found the other types so easily if it weren't for that term. Now I am interested in other types and their origin as well.

The knowledge of where specific flow "discipline's" if you would, is an ever growing interest within flow communities. Its hard to find as flow is a doing thing so its hard to find specifics on how its changed and thus trace back to the source. However we do know of certain cultures and their use of the original form and thats starting to be understood which is the first step to respect. I know Maori cultures heavily influenced the use of poi as well as other Polynesian countrys. I know our practices aren't negatively affecting their ability to practice their cultures and for the most part of the opinons of Maori New Zealanders ive seen they're very okay with it. Its its own seperate thing and they dont cross. Maori culture uses it traditionally with women as form of story telling, each movement symbolises deep meaning that can be told through movement, before it was primarily story telling within the culture it was also a form of training the hands and wrists of warriors and hunters. Popular culture holds no appropriation of the meaning just the enjoyment, and is now vastly diverse from even the original flow prop. Which no one truely knows but theres speculation on glowsticking in early 80's rave culture. And im sure other disciplines have their own origin and growth storys aswell. I hope very much that we can understand more about how the past has evolved into today so we can keep it growing with love
