Jerry Quarry was one of the most underrated heavy weights of all time. He fought Patterson to a draw, fought Ali to essentially a draw until his Achilles heel reared its ugly and the fight was stopped due to cuts. @rummy Please make.a documentary on This guy? After fighting the best in the world during the 70s when HW division was at its greatest of all time. Sadly Jerry and his brother Mike both both devoted cte dementia. I remember when Quarry died in 1998. My dad told me Rocky was inspired by Jerry.

Credit to Floyd for refusing to keep swerving Liston, even though Cus D'Amato insisted on putting that fight off indefinitely. Patterson used to say he wished there was a trapdoor beneath the ring, so he could escape the humiliation after getting knocked out. The guy had nothing to be ashamed of.
@j.l.40544 жыл бұрын
Exactly... Not only did Liston have like 25 lbs on him, but Patterson's style was absolutely hard-countered by Liston. Those two losses don't take anything away from Patterson's greatness - him beating Liston would have been one of the most remarkable wins in history.
@topeoyerinde42414 жыл бұрын
He just didn't have the chin at heavyweight. Naturally 175lb, he was just a too small man even for that era so anyone over 200lb that landed cleanly on him was gonna drop him.

Joseph JoeJoe-Totally agree.Wish more modern fighters had the courage and honesty to fight their most deserving rivals rather than make excuses to avoid tough fights.Floyd was a true warrior.
@lwmson4 жыл бұрын
No, he didn't have anything to be ashamed of. Floyd, at 190 pounds, simply didn't have the size to compete with Liston, who was 35 lbs bigger. He also couldn't compete with Ali, who was 25 lbs. heavier. But Ali himself called Floyd "the most scientific" fighter he ever faced, and had he been 20 lbs. heavier the outcone could have been different for him both the Liston and Ali bouts.
@fiucik14 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Ali used to mock Patterson, calling him "a rabbit" because he was so scared of Liston, that he froze like a rabbit. Well, I'm not a shrink, but I think you can't help it, if you're scared. All you can do is face your fear, and Floyd did. Twice.

@josephshields29224 жыл бұрын
you are 100% right. If you read the old "Ring" magazines its interesting to see the experts assesment of Floyd on his rise and right after. he took the title T.hey claim he has the fastest hands in history. They constantly acknowledge his ko percentage . Later on He gets criticized for taking easy title defenses.When Ingo beats him they act like he's been exposed as a fake but when he takes the title back he gets his rep back. The Liston fights hurt him badly.They wrongly gave him a stigma of having a glass jaw. This is ridiculous because he was only kayoed 3 times in his 25 year career. He was the only man to beat Ingo and Sonny kayoed everyone. Talk about underrated - Sonny Liston is rarely seen on lists of the greatest. Its as if he didn't exist. He was superhuman beating everyone in less than 3 rounds.After the Liston fight Floyd beat a lot of top fighters they claimed he avoided as champ: Eddie Machem, George Chuvalo, Henry Cooper etc.... but the stigma still stayed. Trouble is folks only repeat what's been said instead of doing research like reading 40 year old maazines, watching videos of the whole fight etc...
@maxsundram84474 жыл бұрын
Joseph Shields he did have a glass jaw, he was knocked down the most times in heavyweight history, like 17 times while he was still champ. Props to him he decided that he wasn’t gonna take any more shit from Cus and actually fight the number 1 contender which he’d been dodging for years, but he beat only one number 1 contender who had actually earned his way there
@napalmjames78584 жыл бұрын
@@maxsundram8447 Did Cus try and protect him and Cherry pick? That chin was definitely weak though. 7 times by Johansen? Wow
@napalmjames78584 жыл бұрын
@@josephshields2922 It's all relative. The heavyweights he beat were mediocre at best and Archie Moore was too old. I respect for him maximizing his talent and being a small fella. My issue is more with the talent level of the fighters he beat. Cus is the common denominator but I'd bet the house Tyson's hands were faster and generated more velocity and power.Ali would also beg to differ he had quicker hands the way he beat Patterson to the punch all night long. Who did Patterson really beat that was elite except an old Archie Moore who was really a light heavyweight? One opponent Pete Rademacher got a title shot in his pro fight .lol It's so rare it never happened again. That is a cherry pick to say the least.

@LowEndMarauder4 жыл бұрын
@@tyreeharper8075 I watched it last night actually. I was going to edit my comment saying I was doing a disservice by comparing Tom to Peter. Where Tom went down 10 times and the ref stopped it after the 11th knock down compared to Peter only being knocked down twice and me falsely remembering him either quitting or being counted out but his corner threw in the towel/stepped into the ring. I'm sure he would have fought on til he was knocked out cold lol. To be fair though his father fought a lot of actual tough competition and Peter McNeely was nothing more than a glorified bum beater. Patterson had some fast ass hands, good ring IQ, and tons of heart. Very underrated resume. Instead of looking at the Liston losses in such a negative light just give credit to Liston for being an amazing puncher and finisher. Remember he needed to drop Patterson 3x. Patterson probably would have been held in much higher regard if he won the wba tournament and became the first 3x champ. He always gave a good account of himself and continued to get good wins and performances long past his prime.

Floyd Patterson is the boxer with the kindest and biggest heart among the greats in all of boxing history. He had to face many challenges along his life but it never made him a bad person. He was, in fact, well-known for his kindness on and off the ring. And for him to be one of the youngest heavyweight world champions in boxing history stamps his legacy among with the greatest of all-time-and he did this during the famed golden age of heavyweight boxing. Yes, he did get knocked down more than anyone else as a champion, but he always fought back and never cowered away from any challenge. He honestly deserves as much acclaim as those that the masses laud way too much. Awesome summary of his championship run! God bless.

Patterson truly doesn't get his due when people talk about the All-Time Greats... The man was so undersized he should have been fighting at LWH (and if he did then IMO he'd be remembered as the best ever in that division). Even with his substantial size disadvantage, this guy was knocking dudes the FK out... He was also one of the most honorable and kind men outside of the ring... When Ali beat Liston in their 1st fight to take the heavyweight title, Liston was devastated... He ended up finding Floyd Patterson waiting for him in the locker room afterwards, who did his best to console him since he personally knew what Liston was going through... If you recall from the video, Liston straight up butchered Patterson in just a single round in two straight fights (and took the heavyweight title from him). That's just the kind of man he was. Others may forget about him, but I certainly never will - one of my 5 favorite fighters in all of history!

My research indicates that Patterson, Moore and Jackson basically engaged in a three-man tournament to determine who succeeded Rocky Marciano as champion, with Patterson beating Jackson in what today would be billed as a "title eliminator" to advance against Moore, then facing him again after winning the title. But I've always been curious as to the machinations behind the scenes that resulted in the powers that be concurring that the Patterson-Moore-Jackson mini-tournament would be for the 'undisputed' title. In modern times there's no doubt an 'undisputed' titleholder relinquishing the title would result in the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC, WBO and EIEIO all to have separate bouts for their respective championships. Yet the WBA, NYSAC, IBU and similar organizations of that era all were apparently on board with the method of choosing Marciano's successor.

Agree with most of your comments except for the Ali-Patterson fight. Are you unaware that Floyd slipped a disc in his back between rounds one and two? Watch the first two rounds entirely. Floyd puts on an impressive boxing display in round one (the only round he won). The original announcer closed circuit tv says "who would think we'd be starting round two with Floyd winning the fight" Then suddenly in the second round without being hit Floyd appears in great distress weaving to and fro as if he'd been beaten up between rounds or if something had been cut out of the film. In the next day press conference we learned that Floyd has aggravated an old 1950's back injury. He actually did this in training but failed to report it not wanting to lose his shot. If you get a copy of the NY Daily News the headline read "Pat's back hurt". I was at the fight and saw Patterson's handlers lifting him in the air between rounds to try and slip his disc back in place. This would have been a competitive fight if Floyd had not been injured. You really are remiss at leaving this important aspect out of your coverage. Maybe you can rectify it.
