2:04 Hairdresser = Tienda? Be careful there, "TIENDA" is any place where you can buy a retail product, not a service like haircutting. Yes, it's true, it's also used to refer to camping tents, but its synonym "CARPA" is more widely used. So, another advice would be, if you're not sure that the word you want to use is the correct one, use a synonym.

In Spanish from Spain we use Tejas and even Méjico for Mexico, but in Mexico they use both with "x". However, the sound is not that of an "x". Personally, I prefer to use "j" as it does not break the rule that Spanish is always pronounced as written, always.

Can someone please clarify the “V” isn’t pronounced as an English letter V, but as a “B” in Spanish correct? I’m super confused because all of my books and Babbel both say V is pronounced as a B, but @1:45 it is clearly being pronounced as an English V.
@FluentUSpanish
@FluentUSpanish 10 ай бұрын
This is an excellent question! In Spanish, the letter "v" should be pronounced similar to the English "v", but in reality, it varies too much and depends on the word. For example, when someone says "vaca" (cow) it is quite noticeable that they are using a "v". However, when someone says "voto" or "viejo", it is quite common to pronounce it similar to a "b". Listening practice is the key to grasp this and understand how words vary depending on the accent, the context and even the mood! FluentU.com is ideal for this specific reason. You will love it! Languages taught by natives and thousands of examples.

I have the same question. I was told that Spanish doesn't have the English V sound, and both "B" and "V" should be pronounced like "B", just sometimes stronger and other times softer...

Very nice. However, just a small point-an English speaker would not use “cheek” in this context. We do sometimes say something is “cheeky,” but that seems to be declining in use. “The nerve” I think would be a better translation. But yes, “the audacity” is also a good translation.

@@silviabeatricevaretto9449 Yes. OR, you could also say "You have some nerve!" (or, "You've got some nerve!") IF you are addressing an individual. However, I think there is no easy way to say this without sounding angry. You could also say, for example, "He had the nerve to cut in front of me while I was in line!" Many times, however, people would shorten in to just "The nerve," but when talking ABOUT someone else, not talking to the person who irritated you. Sometimes, you might also hear "Of all the nerve!" Here is an example of a conversation: Person 1: Did I tell you what happened to me at the store? Person 2: No, what? Person 1: Well, there were only 3 donuts left on the shelf, and as I was reaching out to get one, the guy next to me grabbed all 3 of them right in front of me! Person 2: The nerve! [OR "Well Of all the nerve!" OR "He had some nerve!" Person 1: It's OK. I bought a slice of cake instead.

@@SuperFishers Yes, could be in the UK. I'm a linguist in the US, (I'm 54), and I've never heard this expression used this way in North American English. Look at the response I posted to Silvia, above. In the example conversation, would you use "The cheek!" in that context?

For the verb "cortar", cortarme means "cut my/me", right? or is there something else that makes it "get cut-mine" or a better more precise translation? or does it literally mean "get a haircut" so if I was to say "my friend came to get a haircut" I would say "mi amigo vine cortarme el cabello" as well? or does it become cortarte or something else?
@FluentUSpanish
@FluentUSpanish Жыл бұрын
Hi Behr! This is an excellent question. In Spanish, "cortar" is a regular verb that can be conjugated in different ways depending on the subject of the sentence. "Cortarme" and "cortarte" are both forms of the verb "cortar," but they have different subject pronouns attached to them at the end. "Me" and "te". "Cortarme" means "to cut myself" and is used when the subject of the sentence is "yo" (I). For example, "Voy a cortarme el pelo" means "I am going to cut my hair." On the other hand, "cortarte" means "to cut you" and is used when the subject of the sentence is "tú" (you). For example, "Voy a cortarte el pelo" means "I am going to cut your hair". It's all in the pronouns!

Definitivamente la mejor forma de aprender un idioma cuando no hay dinero para pagar clases, es prcticar, repetir y repetir y si se tiwne a laguien nativo con quien practicar, mucho mejor. He buscado todas las formas y aunque aprendo cosas, al final uno se enreda cuando escucha conversaciones,, en mi caso quiero aprender ingles

I found if you can learn the proper pronunciation of the Spanish alphabet and watch your favourite movies with spanish subtitles it's easier to pick up the grammar, which i feel is way more important in Española then English because of mainly the female/male difference in nouns ect ect ps learn soy/ estar if you get the variations of those down you're well on your way

You pronounce 'll' like 'J' as in "Joe and not 'Y' as in "Yarn" when you say el cabello 7:12. Is this a regional thing or should I use the 'J' sound with 'll'?

It depends on the spanish dialect you wanna speak. As Jheimy said that's how we say it in Argentina but you can say it with the Y sound as well.

That is a regional pronunciation from Argentina and Uruguay. However, both pronunciations you indicated are Standard Spanish as Spanish RAE recognizes the River Plate Basin variant as part of the Standard Spanish.

Does it matter how I pronounce the “ello” in cabello? I am being taught say it like “eyyo” not “eshjo”. Is it just depending on what country I am learning it from? My source is a Mexican American.

Yes, it depends on the accent of the professor, I had a Peruvian Spanish professor and a Colombian Spanish professor, and honestly , the Colombian accent worked better for me. I could understand more.

These videos have been helping a lot. I do think it's funny, though- my brain now is trying to interpret literally anything I don't understand into Spanish. It's the most bizarre thing. I was watching cage fighting and the cheering crowd sounded muffled. So it sounded like Spanish while I was trying to hear. They were literally just chanting, "Andy Sucks!" And then my dog was having a nightmare this morning. She was whimpering in her sleep and woke me. In my half asleep state, I briefly thought she was trying to speak Spanish.

Clicked to watch a clip of the Big Bang theory tbh I speak Spanish lol. Idk why the example of using a dubbed American series to teach Spanish, I meant the idea is nice, but watching a real one makes sense as you can see the movements of the lip, but now that I’m writing this gibberish paragraph it comes to mind children cartoons have the same concept, and Latino subs have a clearer pronunciation.
