This is an informative video. We call ourselves fishermen but often we are actually hunters. First we have to find the fish. Some days that's easier than others. Then. you have to figure out how to to get them to eat. Thank you captain skinner for giving details of your trip. 3 hrs no fish. That's gonna help a lot of anglers who think it should always be lock and load.

I’m a few weeks away from heading down the shore. I’m already ordering tackle. 4” gulp mullets in white, chartreuse, pink, and some 2/0 high/low teaser rigs. My big surfcaster is out of commission and probably won’t be fixed until the end of the trip. I need to get a smaller reel for the lighter tsunami rod that I used to finish out last years trip. I’m actually looking forward to a more mobile lighter tackle approach in the surf/wash this summer, rather than chunking bunker and clams. While anything that bends the rod is a bonus, I’m kinda tired of always catching dogfish and skates.

I've had too many surprises in fishing to make assumptions any more, but lots of underwater video suggests they'll hit the bouncing rig. A lot would depend on how much the boat is rocking. Ocean has motion. Bays and Sound not so much.

Hey John, quick question if you can answer. What’s significant about the curved hook on the bucktail, similar to the bucktail on the thumbnail. Why not just use a non-curved one? Is it for vertical jigging? Very curious.

It's just a normal siwash j-hook, but the jig is a swing-hook.

Hey John, Great stuff as always! Do you always use the Spro style bucktails? I currently have ball jigs, banana jigs, upperman jigs and spro style jigs. Do you have any insight as to when to use certain types of jig style? It may just be in my head, but the banana style seems to perform well when I'm fishing for fluke near structure, but I'm not sure of the circumstances to use the others.
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
The "spro-type" heads are fine for fluke. All the heads work, but there are some special applications where it matters a little.

Cannot find the Tony Maja 9 inch/5 oz flutter spoon anywhere after your video. I am not sure how your 5 inch gulp grub tails are more durable. I was losing grub tails Tuesday/Wednesday fishing for fluke. Was down to bodies and otter tails by the end of the day.

These were 4-inch grubs, and they hold up very well. It depends on what was tearing yours. I was dealing with only fluke and robins.

Love the channel John. Thanks to you and Elias V’s old videos I’ve figured out how to halfway fish. Question: I’ve had a horrible fluking season so far. I don’t have spot lock, and other than last Saturday the wind is usually woofing when I’m able to get out. It seems like most of your videos this year you’ve used spot lock. Do you think that’s at least contributing to my horrible fluking season so far… Wind against current? Mostly fishing the Hempstead Harbor area…
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
A proper drift is everything in fluke fishing. Without a trolling motor, I doubt I'd have caught half the fluke I've had this season. BTW, I'm only using spot lock to hold the boat in place when reeling up a fish and getting ready to put down again. I do that so as not to lose valuable drift ground. Otherwise I'm slow trolling with the motor to get direction and speed right.
@Tommy.OrginalvideosPhilly2 жыл бұрын
Must be moving when fluke fishing... He is only using the spot lock when working on a fish he hooks up with so it stops his drift so when he drops back down he gets off spot lock to continue his drift so he doesn't lose ground and go over possible fish on the bottom.... Great technique when going over a particular part of bottom you know is holding fish, and when fishing alone. If he was fishing with others you cant just stop the drift whenever you want lol. Perks of owning your own boat
