this guy is freaking awesome just saved me $300 in lessons No one ever talks about this because it is so subtle that dance between edging and downwinding because those micro movements become so en-grained and intuitive.

Brilliant analysis of how the 'open stance' relates to the front leg as straight. Totally novel take on how those two factors are related and interdependent. You've uncovered a critical point here for kiters that are trying to improve. I think we all get the "micro-movement" thing ... but the open board stance relationship with the correct leg posture is a revelation. EXCELLENT teaching moment!!

Excellent video, very didactital. I may be wrong or picky, no problem, i'm ready and glad to be prooved wrong, it will help me progress. The diagram drawn on the sand around 4:00 shows that even when riding very slow, with only 10° of apparent wind shift from true wind, the kiter is loosing 10° on each tack versus a crosswind course. Experience proves that going upwind is possible. The angle between apparent wind and upwind course including drift is for sure less than 30°, depending on board drag and edging efficiency. With a 30 degrees apparent wind shift, it would mean a true course 60° to true wind, and therefore 120° between tacks. This value seams to fit better the observation.
@FlukesKitesurfing4 жыл бұрын
Hey Yan, love to see the passion for understanding there mate! and yes, a good kiter might be able to achieve 30 degrees better than the perpendicular to true wind line, while an average kiter might simply be able to just keep up wind (to the same spot on the beach.) effectively making their tack zero degrees while a foil board can achieve above 30 degrees. So it depends greatly on technique and equipment. The diagram in the sand might seem confusing as it only shows the outward tack, and this beach is not perfectly crosswind, its cross onshore meaning that you lose a little down the beach on the way out and gain it on the way in. (This can be seen in the example at the end) so the apparent wind angle shifts to the other side and you can make ground on the way back not shown in the diagram. (dont want to many lines in the sand :) . Hope that all makes sense!

Good Tips - maybe 1 more tip is do big tacks, some people on my local break tend to mow the lawn and don't do big tacks they tend to stay in same area - this becomes a problem when its a reef break and lots of people want to access some waves. Doing big tacks frees up the wave area gets you in a good spot for getting onto waves as well as give you options for avoiding other riders. It can also help by going past the breaks and into swell to get up wind faster and then pick bigger waves on the way back in. Sharing of the available water- smooth and waves etc and rotating your position/ tacks makes it more enjoyable for everyone. Also if you have more experience and skill then consider giving beginners more space rather than boxing them in.

Despite you good advices on large sea spot, I still struggle to go upwind on a very narrow lake (200/250m) which need very frequent tack and short distance between both. What transition or additional tip would you recommend to optimize upwind on a very narrow track (in addition with very light and gusty winds, and wind shadows near both shores🥴). Up to now I very rarely succeeded to come back to starting point and must spend more time walking around the lake than riding on water🥴

awesome videos as always and really good to see a kiter with such good knowledge as Im sailer & often talk to even kite surf instructors who don't really grasp this concept. Think you should change the name to 5 tips and you cover alot in the video as always. Kite at 45degrees is at least tip number 4......heres a question, you say going slower creates a better upwind angle (which I totally agree) but does it actually get you upwind quicker? for example is it best to travel at 37degrees to the wind at 15 knots or maybe 45 degrees to the wind at 20knots. Im sure there is happy medium and lots of variables with board shapes. When sailing, using a waypoint on GPS, you can see your actual speed to a windward way point, which is called VMG (velocity made good), so you might be traveling 10 knots at 45degrees but you VGM to destination (waypoint) is 5 knots. When I sailed across the Indian ocean, my australain crew made would ask, whats the VeGeMite? :) often trimming the sail a little would take days off our trip from Ind to Oz. Thanks for great videos!!
@FlukesKitesurfing6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, thanks mate! and yeah, good question. It would be interesting to know the exact ratio or speed/wind strength that moves you upwind in quicker time. Generally speaking, moving slower helps get upwind at all, or better, not necessarily worried about time itself, But, agreed it is an interesting thought, I think perhaps the speed range might be quite small to get a benefit, as a difference with the kite (from a boat) is that you lose your edge as you get too fast, it relies on physical strength to hold your body position, and the faster you go, the harder that becomes to have good posture and this adds to downwind slipping. Also that your tack length is much shorter, so the loss of time and distance through jibes or tacks might be greater, and potentially needing to do more overall to move upwind. that said, I am sure some people who race have worked that out, it would be interesting to know what their strategy is for sure. :)
@GeckoCkCkCk5 жыл бұрын
Speed can result in better velocity made good (VGM) upwind. The upwind force of the board results from accelerating water downwind. Force is mass times acceleration, the faster you are going, the more acceleration you can impart to the water downwind, and so you won't have to move as much mass at a time. (That means you don't have to dig as big a hole in the water with your kiteboard.) The bigger hole you are digging in the water with the kiteboard, the larger the drag. (Fins work better at high speed too.) The kite high lifting your weight also reduces drag in the water. Sliding the board ahead, so the center of the kite lines cross the board behind the center of the board will contribute going upwind with less drag (shallower hole in the water).
@chrischarlwood5 жыл бұрын
I am with you on points 2 and 3 but not 1. Going slower, especially with a big kite imho will make going upwind harder. Kite higher means less edge and less apparent wind. That diagram in the sand was very confusing to me. Stance and edge control with kite low, pressing edge with rear foot are most important I believe.
@mgallagher10015 жыл бұрын
I think he's right about 1 too. As a windsurfer and boat sailor we maximize our speed by continually falling off the wind, which means gradually arcing from a beam reach to a broad reach. This is do to the shifting of the apparent wind more over our bow as we gain speed. If the wind where to drop in speed it also shifts back to toward the true wind, and this causes us to have to steer back up wind to keep moving. If on the other hand we go slower we can sail closer to the wind (more up wind).

@@mgallagher1001 Yes I can see this approach works for sailing, but kiting is very different with more variables such as kite size, height, angle of attack, weight of rider, size and type of board, waves or flat, edging, upright or crouched stance... I understand how the true wind is closer actual wind direction when speed reduces... but in practice going upwind kiting is a mixed bag of factors.

Great to understand cutting upwind. Where is the safety leash though?!?!?
@FlukesKitesurfing6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Keegan! The safety leash from the harness attaches to the metal ring on the chicken loop, a little hard to spot in this video but it's just below the quick release. Any more questions just let us know :)

I am curious about the etics and rules regarding space and not getting entangled or hitting other surfers?
@FlukesKitesurfing5 ай бұрын
hey yeah there are a set of right of way rules to help avoid that. we actually don't have a YT video on the topic, but there are many others out there if interested :)

i consider myself a master at edging as well.. but with a kite its a whole new world
@FlukesKitesurfing6 жыл бұрын
Hey 2007, it sure is, but that is also part of the beauty of it... Once you get it... You stop looking at the kite, and you can really feel the wind through the bar feedback... Then it gives the great session of sailing and ripping along just using the power of the wind, and the edge of your board.. its awesome :)

Instead to loosely hanging the arm down, I stretch my body out and try to touch the water with my free hand. If feels like this improves the upwind angle while increases the speed, but I could be wrong.
@FlukesKitesurfing4 ай бұрын
Yeah for sure! its a good tip to try and touch the front hand hand on the water. helps students to remember to stay a bit lower and not get pulled over the front edge of the board too :)

I used to have a bar with an adjustable stopper that I could slide down to keep the kite as powered as possible. it helped me be able to let go of my front hand and get my body in the best position for edging. it wasn't a full on locked stopper though it would slide up if I pushed it the bar with about 20 lb of pressure. have you ever used an adjustable stopper for going upwind wondering what your thoughts are.

Hi! Loved all your videos. Started kiteboarding this summer and i have been loving it. Biggest issue for me is actually going too fast. Any other tips on how to achieve slowing down? My friends are just telling me to point my board higher upwind but i can't really do that. Thanks for all your videos, keep it up
@Harry-TramAnh5 жыл бұрын
Don't have you kite too low in the wind window, basically keep it higher to 12pm and don't pull too much on the bar.
