Flute Essentials: Thumbport

I personally use a thumbport because I was having issues with playing my flute without causing some hand pain in my right thumb - it started in high school but it was mild at first. In some ways it got better, because after working on positioning my tone got better and my technique got more consistent, so I was only having issues in a single area, but because I was consistently having the same issue it got worse in that single area. I brought it up to my flute teacher and she had me test out a thumb port. It worked perfectly for me, so a friend gave me one that they had gotten from a past teacher and didn’t use.

I've decided that I want to learn to play the flute. But, I've had a below-the-knuckle amputation on my right thumb - so I just have a stump for a thumb. I think I'll get one of those gadgets and see if it helps me hold the instrument.

I noticed the butterfly engraving on the mouthpiece in the introduction.Would this also be functionable for slippage of your embouchure as well. It seems that you would have a better grip with your lower lip?

Do these thumbports fit a Guo Tocco Plus New Voice flute?

Hi, I don't have the Guo flute, but I do have the Guo New Voice piccolo and it fits, but it is rotated too far under the piccolo to be useful. I am going to trim it a bit to allow it to rotate up, but it does fit the piccolo nicely. I doubt this helps you much, but you never know.

@@marjorie3174 the normal ones don’t fit. I’ve been advised to buy the wooden ones for £75! Wtf. How do they get to these prices? RIP off. I’ll just learn the hard way.

I JUST PURCHASED A THUMBPORT BASED ON YOUR DEMO AND I WILL SPEND SOME TIME PRACTISING WITH IT. HOWEVER I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW THE NAME AND SOURCE OF THE PIECE YOU PLAYED AT THE END OF THE THUMBPORT DEMO. WHAT WAS IT AND BY WHOM? PLEASE. FROM FLUTE BEGINNER ODIPUS REX. 7-16-2020
