Much like singers, flutists can use the resonance chambers we have in our bodies to make a fuller, richer, more appealing, clear, and focused sound. Today we talk specifically about where these built-in resonance chambers are and how to access them.

I'm going to stop brushing my teeth so I can get extra cavities in my head to resonate when I play the flute! :-D

I couldn't think what the sinus cavities might feel like to open until you mentioned sneezing! That helps a lot!

Thinking of opening up like you're about to sneeze works magic! Definitely something I want to think about more often.

Resonance! Going to experiment with trying to access more head resonance today with high register exercises.

As a singer, I find the similarities between singing and playing the flute to be amazing. As a new flute student, it's strange that what I forget most is that I should feel like I'm singing while I play. I really had no idea that we had to rely on our bodies for resonance and that it wasn't just the flute! Thank you!

I like your example of thinking about sneezing and singing "into the mask" to try and feel where those sinus cavities are. Those visual examples will help with teaching students how to find and open them!

Thank you for showing the string instrument. I think that example makes our body resonance much more understandable. 👍

Yes! I always forget about the sinus cavaties -- but it is so true! There is so much room up there and opening it up can really change a sound! I always try to pretend that I am acutally singing while I play -- this helps me to open all of this up!

It is so good to remember that we are supposed to be mimicking singers! I feel like I can always play better right after I sing. I want to work on opening the sinus cavity to help open up my high register. It’s also crazy to think that the hard pallet is so small! I’m excited to work on this over the break!

Thanks! I noticed in my KZbin analytics that a few people who'd searched for things like "cavities" or "oral hygiene," etc, were not surprisingly led to this video -- oops! haha. 👀

I love all the different ways you’ve suggested finding resonance in your body! It’s such an abstract concept and it’s so hard to help students (and myself) really feel where their body can act as a resonator. Thank you!!

Glad to hear it, haha! Glad you joined the Hawaii Flute Society. And I hope to organize a Flute Tube Facebook group over Thanksgiving break.... we'll see if I can get it done.... but right now I don't really have a "home" for my viewers! So I'm going to try to create more of a community that way. I'm sure if I manage to get it done I'll put a link in my future videos! 👍

Cool! I'm going to do my best to set it up over my Thanksgiving break. After it's off the ground I think checking in regularly should be fun and easy! I'd like to keep track of people out there watching a lot better than I manage right now, myself!

You may be right about body cavity resonance affecting flute tone, but I just don't understand how that's possible. I think of the flute tube as being the only resonator. I believe that the air stream is affected only by how it's shaped, sized, directed, and pressurized by the throat, mouth, and lips--I don't understand the body resonance part. It's different for singers, who produce the sound from within their bodies, but wind players produce the sound through an external instrument.
