Shiina Ringo is a genius, and quite possibly the most versatile female composer on the planet (at least, found anywhere near a pop chart). Her influence is conspicuous now more than ever, with countless younger artists who are currently doing great things citing her as an inspiration.

Terrific band!. With Sheena Ringo as front woman, singer, composer and national icon (and one of the reasons of one 810 years pidgeon to want to play music). Every one of their members is a top notch musician and composer and their music is absolutely hipnotic. The bassist Seiji Kameda has produced music for Aina The End, Glim Spanky, Plastic Tree or Tokyo Ska Paradise (you can consider every one of these bands as a suggestion, lol), and he consider himself a Band Maid fan. I recomend their live performances, you can find several still available in CD Japan. Thank you señorita!!

Beware. Shiina Ringo is a rabbit hole few has ever climbed up back from. I blame her for making me end up in Japan, and am now living here for 15+ years. I don't know where to start explaining her. I have to say I haven't really kept up with what she's doing the last few years though, and I think Tokyo Jihen is basically on a very long hiatus, or disbanded. I think they were disbanded for many years, only to reunite again and now it's been a long silence again. Ringo started her solo career back in 1998 I think. It was mostly pop and rock at the time when she was in her early twenties, but she became huge in Japan back then and I would say most people, including me, still relate mostly to that era of Ringo. Although she has done a lot since then, not to mention the popular Tokyo Jihen era as well. Getting older (or more mature 😅) her music became more cabaret-y, jazzy, lounge-y, if that makes sense. I think her solo career the last few years is producing a kind of music that is very hard to digest, and honestly goes far beyond my head. Maybe I'll learn to appreciate it if I ever grow up🙃. But, she is a living legend (only one year older than me!).

She is also a real good friend with Utada Hikaru; just read into their friendship if you care to. Hikaru being one of the few huge absolute superstars in Jpop, for real. They also did collabs.

Shiina Ringo's vision and musical perspective along with genius individual musicians that also can compose their own music as they mutually support Shiina Ringo's sound and mission. Since Ringo Shiina debuted in 1998, it is difficult to find a Japanese pop or rock singer who has not been influenced by her, whether consciously or unconsciously. This is especially true for female singers. Miku Kobato (BAND-MAID) is one of them. She has broken down the genre barriers in J-POP. She also served as the music director for the closing ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

When you really dive into Sheena Ringo's work, you realise she's far from a pop singer - instead, her music touch everything from punk (imagine a band with three bassists - including Sheena - one guitarist - Hisako Tabuchi from Number Girl/Pedro - and one drummer) to progressive (her third album Kalk Samen Kuri No Hana is is indescribable in its beauty, depth and complexity), from alt-rock to smooth jazz. And movie soundtrack. And sport hymn. And foreign songs covers (in french, german or english).

Welcome earthwoman, you just entered the SHEENA/SHIINA RINGO GALAXY. You will travel from star to star, system jazz to system rock, system funk to system punk, system cabaret to system progressive, and visit each planet (song) in each system, and you will never encounter the same landscape! Get ready for a extremely long, rich and exhilarating journey! Seriously: Sheena (Shiina - she uses both) Ringo has been a star since her first solo album (totally composed by her of course) at 20. After three solo albums, she decided she wanted to be part of a band and created Tokyo Jihen with her musicians. Since then, she has kept on doing both, while collaborating with a lot of people and writing for tons of artists. For me, she's the most important solo artist of the XXI century so far. But her work is immense and so varied that it is not always easy to penetrate. So I recommand the chronological method. ... and I realise I'm unfair towards those amazing musicians that I deeply love! My favorite being Seiji Kameda on bass - incredible bassist but also producer (he helped Sheena to co-produced since her first album), festival organiser, radio host (he recently welcomed Saiki and Misa from Band-Maid) and an overall Mr Nice Guy ! But Sheena only play with amazing musicians (she's a multi-intrumentist herself - guitar, bass, drums, piano, melodica, percussions - including apple-shaped shaker (apple="ringo" in japanese ... ) 😉- and she's a good whistler too). Every Tokyo Jihen DVD and Bluray is a gem, but Discovery is amongst their best.

I learned about Sheena Ringo from Ohrenje's Miku documentary. I was quite surprised when Sheena did a collaboration with Atarashii Gakko earlier this year - I am absolutely in love with it. It's called Dora 1 Dokusou (ドラ1独走) (I take this to mean something like First Round Draft Pick.) I think it refers to Sheena seeing a lot of herself when she was younger in Suzuka from AG. Their performance together in the MV is amazing!

@@NittPicc Yes, Sheena Ringo's most recent album (English name: Carnival) has a number of collaborations. I recently saw some older footage of Sheena and you can really see the resemblance to Suzuka of AG! in both looks and mannerisms, just slightly less chaotic. Shiina Ringo was trained as a pianist until she got an illness that caused her to lose balance between her left and right hands, but she can play multiple instruments and made her debut with rock music with shocking lyrics. I think Miku's lyrics are influenced by Shiina Ringo's poetry. Although not as literary as Shiina Ringo, Miku's word choice is clearly Shiina Ringo-esque. Kameda, the bassist of Tokyo Incidents, is a famous producer and has produced many famous Japanese bands and singers, including Spitz. I’ll agree with you, NittPcc on this, the music resonates with me. Resonates, meaning more than just feeling it (the music) but when an object is in resonance it vibrates in response to the source. At times music causes a reaction in our being that we feel (calm, relaxed, transported away [at that moment in time]) at the core of our being. Crazy as it sounds I can’t say it any better - sorry. Maybe someone else can.

Japan went HARD for jazz decades ago, it was hugely influential. City pop is a genre that practically doesn't exist in Western music, it's basically jazz/funk pop. 80s anime soundtracks? It's all city pop and jazz fusion. Classic NES game soundtracks? Jazz fusion. Then you get stuff like this. I checked out Tokyo Jihen and Shiina Ringo's solo work a while while back, and decided it wasn't for me after all, even though I thought I'd be into it. But I must have had some bad luck with album choice or something, because this absolutely slaps. I need to give them another chance.
