Basil is the one that carries the truth to Mari's death. That's why he is always erased from headspace. And still Omori tries to get him back every time, and every time is forced to reset headspace, but he refuses to reset it without Basil, hoping that someday he will stop reminding him of the trauma and they will live there peacefully. Thinking that Sunny/Omori hates Basil is literally not getting the headspace as a whole. He is literally the reason of the adventure.

their relationship is so interesting. i always figured that they never exactly _hated_ each other, they just...didnt really know how to feel for a very long time because trauma kind of ruins relationships. or at the very least, REALLY complicates them. because, like. youve got these positive memories, that make you feel so happy and fuzzy, and at the same time youve got these negative memories, that make you feel sick and sad and angry and fearful. you want to be around this person because you love them _so_ much, but youre afraid to because theyre directly tied to something that makes you feel _so_ horrible. its very frustrating because its tainted, and a small part of you may even hate them for it, but you cant erase the good times and the bonding you had with this person. you cant get rid of how much they mean to you. so now youre just stuck in a weird teeter totter state of not knowing how to feel. not knowing whether you should reach out or stay away. not knowing what you actually want. its pretty much the same with sunny and mari, actually. he still keeps her around in headspace because he loves her so much, even though she torments him on a daily basis.

I'M SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED HERO. (writing this before i've watched everything you say about him) I've always thought about how Sunny changes all of his friends in headspace to be either what he wants them to be or how he views them to be. He views Kel as the funny friend he does dumb things so that's put to 11 in headspace, he wants Aubrey to like him so she really likes him, he feels so much guilt over Mari he's changed her into this perfect person who always supported him and removed everything that could ever paint her in a bad light or get her hurt, he's made Basil into this really defenseless only ever sweet person to try to convince himself he could never do anything wrong. But Hero, Hero is just perfect. The way Sunny views Hero is as perfect. Everyone loves Hero. Even sweetheart, someone he hates falls in love with Hero instantly. That is just how Sunny views Hero to be.

There are many reasons Sunny may picture Hero the way he does. I personally like a combination of queer reasons and the way Mari talked about him combining into one, but I think how each individual see's it is fine. It's apart of the game that isn't explored at all so I'm just interested to see what people say.

Kinda funny that even though you have literal amnesia your subconscious is still able to recall full paragraphs of your friend's exact words and his intrest in flower symbolism is literally so embedded that your dreams include flower symbols. I’m not a Sunflower shipper at all, but I definitely think that Sunny grew up admiring his friends to the point of small crushes. The only thing that takes away from it is the fact that Sunny didn’t get to experience puberty like a normal child, he never left his house or talked to other teenagers. Sunny would need to learn stuff after the story of the game, so I can’t see him being in a good relationship with anyone until he finds stuff out about himself. (The ramblings of a gay guy who has gone through this exact thing in the past)

So Basil being killed would represent the corruption of the innocent person he was before or the damage it did to him mentally, and the guilt shows because Omori leads Basil to all of the deaths or directly causes it by some action

A lot of fascinating stuff I never considered when thinking about Sunny's bisexuality, such as how Hero is portrayed in Headspace, or the use of a "red string of fate" by the Branch Coral to refer to their bond. On the topic of Stranger, one thing I find interesting is how when you fight him in the Hikikomori route he says "SUNNY... All those times that I reached out to you... Why didn't you answer?", implying that Basil had multiple times tried to visit Sunny during the 4 years since the incident but was ignored. Perhaps when Basil tried to reach out, Sunny could no longer recognize him, which is why the version of him who represents the truth is a Stranger to Sunny. I would love to see some kinda sequel, expansion, or fan-game covering Basil's POV of the events of the game honestly, getting a deeper look into his mind and feelings abt the incident and Sunny. I imagine there would be a lot less Headspace and more waking nightmares as he doesn't cope through dreams like Sunny, and seems to suffer from psychotic episodes during the day.

Ooh! As a transfem i figured I'd give my thoughts on the Potion of Girl First of all, the restriction of the item to certain areas can be seen as Sunny subconsciously being nervous about exploring his gender, and hiding away all the exploration in the deepest parts of Headspace. I'm sure plenty other transfems know the experience of waiting for all your family to be gone to experiment with dresses and makeup, and making sure to bury all those thoughts away. Second, i think it is very important to remember that Medusa(the Slime Sister who gives you the potion) very openly flirts with Sunny, and with young trans people it is very common to have trouble distinguishing whether you find someone attractive or if you want to look like them. You could even use this to argue that Sunny doesn't have an actual crush on Audrey and just wants to look like her, but i wouldn't go that far personally. And for my final point, i think the fact that Sunny's gay feelings are much more subtle than his feelings for Aubrey or Sweetheart or the Slime Sisters can be used to reinforce this transfem idea. I'm not bisexual myself, but my gf is and she's transfem as well. She had always felt really off when she was crushing on guys, and this was abnormal cuz she was raised in an extremely accepting house and had multiple queer friends and family members. It was only after she started to explore her gender and realize that she was a girl that she started to feel comfortable with being into men. She didn't like the feeling of being a guy in a gay relationship, but being a girl changed the feeling for her. Sunny could be struggling with something similar

However, when you view it through a queer lens, you can find trans allegory/imagery. It doesn't have to be intentional to make that interpretation valid.

I've always been interested in how Basil functions gameplay-wise and how that could kinda relate to how Sunny sees him. Let's start with Basil's skills: Notably, all of his skills are actually reflective of other party members in flavor and/or function. Cheer is very visually similar to Aubrey's Pep Talk and Team Spirit, and the connection between the names themselves makes you think of both as cheerleading, Herbal Remedy and Photograph are Hero's Cook and Kel's Can't Catch Me respectively, and Body Slam is a reference to Boss... except those aren't his only skills. Body Slam is replaced by a different skill dependent on what Flower Charm Basil has equipped, and he typically represents the aspects of those flowers as a result. Gladiolus hits all enemies for big damage and always strikes in the heart as a reference to being the Sword Flower; Cactus deals damage to all foes based on Defense and Heart to reference cacti resilience; Rose lowers the attack of all goes and heals the party by 40% of HP, combining Hero's Smile and Snack Time; Tulip deals big damage to all foes based on Omori's stats; and Flower Crown does the exact same thing as Omori's Red Hands. It's fascinating how Basil's skills take on the traits of each party member and their respective flowers's traits, making him the most adaptable in his role in the party and allowing him to basically outright replace everyone. I can and will head-canon this as Sunny viewing Basil with the best traits of all flowers, and paired with the fact that Basil fills a mostly supportive role, maybe Basil was always one of the best characters when it came to supporting Sunny and keeping him going, even when no one else was available. Basil's follow-ups are unique in how they interact with Omori. Not only does Omori notice Basil, but he's super receptive to Basil's interactions and emotions. Both of them end up on the same wavelength after they interact by matching their emotions, and this is furthered by Basil's ability to reach third-stage emotions like Omori. Basil's extreme emotions can imply instability for Basil in the real world, as Sunny can easily imagine Basil's emotional intensity reaching points of Mania, Misery, and Fury, meaning that Basil's instability during the main story could be more of an exacerbation of previous issues he already had (Basil having issues would also explain his... idea during the truth sequence). It also shows how expressive Sunny may have been in Basil's company as they would vent their frustrations, mull over sad thoughts, and find comfort together. I think this is furthered by Omori being shown happy in the photo album only once, and it's when Basil is reading an interesting book to Omori. (If I'm wrong, please correct me) Finally, Release Energy. The fact that it takes only the two of them to achieve the same damage as Kel, Aubrey, and Hero is astonishing, but then they fully heal and raise all stats is astounding. Sunny's connection with Basil is so strong it heals all the damage they've taken and they come back stronger. In short, I think Sunny REALLY likes Basil and Basil REALLY likes Sunny.

I thought the the whole dream auby crush and slime girls was Sunny trying to make himself seem straight, like he was trying to convince himself he couldn't possibly like Basil (or maybe even Kel) especially considering how one of the mostly featured female characters that is widely considered to be popular and attractive(sweetheart) is very annoying or even downright disgusting in behavior to Sunny/Omori. To add to the "maybe Kel" thing, one reading of Aubrey's behaviour in Headspace is that part of Sunny wants to be "rescued" from his depression, so he casts Aubrey as his Manic Pixie Dream Girl. She's endlessly supportive, she pulls him towards adventures in Headspace and Omori's complete inability to return her affections does nothing to hurt their relationship. Who ends up playing that role in the real world? Kel. It's Kel who drags him outside. It's Kel who offers unconditional love and support. It's Kel who does enough of the talking for the non-verbal Sunny (he only has one line in the entire game that is unambiguously spoken aloud by him, at the very end of the good route, and Basil's comments in the real world imply that Sunny's essentially gone mute from trauma) to start mending his friendships, forging genuine connections with the townsfolk and developing the support network that allows him to confront the truth. It's interesting from a meta perspective. And given that, as mentioned in the video, Aubrey starts coming onto him a lot stronger after Kel gets back in touch, it's easy to square that with the reading that Sunny is trying to convince himself he's straight. For the record, I don't think Kel's actions have to be read as romantic on his part, I just bring it up because a lot of men fall into the trap of associating these things with romantic relationships. Sunny might have interpreted this as romantic and been unsettled by it.

@@StrongestLibrafluidAlive it’s not ever drawn attention to, but if you pay attention to the smoothie descriptions, you can see that they are not organized within the game’s healing amounts by either sunnys tastes or healthiness. However, since the one that heals the most is strawberry, and we know that Basil loves strawberries from the birthday memory, and the lowest heal is the banana smoothie, with Basil seeming less than enthusiastic about a banana popsicle in the photo album, we can ascertain that sunnys mind has organized them by Basil’s tastes. In addition, there is an NPC only accessible from two days left onward by the name of Budgirl in Vast Forest that takes the form of a pink tulip and meows when you interact with it, adding a smoothie at random (other than banana) to your inventory. Strawberry smoothies aren’t sold, so if you want one other than the two findable in the overworld or the two percent chance from fighting strawberry short snakes, this is the only way.

Everyone has probably thought of “I wonder if I was born a different gender?” And so maybe since Sunny literally could imagine it (since he’s living in a world made from his imagination) he just made the possibility there for funsies! My two cents as a trans person on the whole gender swap potion: I always viewed it more as a "The girls room is a forbidden place, so what if I could ACCESS that forbidden place?" curiosity type thing. But what struck me as interesting is the girls room looks... incredibly similar to BASIL'S irl room (same hanging plants in the same locations, same strung up photos, same WALLPAPER), so to me, it felt less like a gender exploration thing, so much as a "What if I could see the girl place, and the girl place was like BASIL, because what if Basil was a girl so I could have a crush on him?" sort of vibe - like maybe he's not 100% comfortable/aware of being bisexual yet, and this is his mind's way of exploring a possibility where it feels more comfortable to have a crush on Basil. But, I can also see where people view it in more of a trans angle as well. That's the fun thing about fiction - it's open to interpretation :)

I also like your take on the killing Basil thing on Blackspace because I also see that: Omori's just trying to put a stop to Basil. IDK if somebody else picked up on this but the amount of times the gang just forget Basil (except the hikkikomori route) is meant to be reflected in the amount of Basil's dead bodies found in Blackspace. The same way the love letter cutscene is meant to show Sunny's conflictive feelings about Aubrey- The amount of times Basil has been yeeted to Blackspace and then the thing loops over and over again is meant to mean Headspace can't repress things for long especially Omori killing him again and again He's trying to get rid of the truth! he just yeeted Basil out because he mentions the truth! Couple of things on the game before I dox myself... I mean I project myself like you did. There was a very interesting theory on daisies being Basil's real flower, who he was vs who he wants to be... One of the meanings of those flowers is also "to keep a secret" if I remember correctly so yeah.😬 While on one hand we see everything from Sunny's unreliable perspective, memories, immagination, subconscious and narration, I can't help but think how the monsters they created that night aren't just in their head anymore, and so I consider Stranger to be an actual connection to the real world Basil, and what he could have told him if he had the chance. (In the same way we see Grandma disappear and Mari being both a guardian angel and a vengeful spirit to Sunny; that's more than just synchronicity, but a soul link narration device). (I'm also projecting a bit because there was one primary school friend I drifted apart at some point that I always considered/had become the personification of my "conscience"/ talking cricket, but that's beyond the point). Still their relationship, romantic, qpp or not, is incredibly strong. Ok now to the actual projecting xD The weird "interests" of Sunny that you didn't want to touch on are probably leftovers from the (hikkik)Omoriboy/ stereotypical weeb/neet characterization, but one wonders what kind of fantasies and outlets a young boy like him with access to a computer might have developed in those years of isolation... (One more thing to remember is how most bosses and weird cameos characters are actually self inserts btw, so maybe we shouldn't read too much into them and take them at face value, still feel free to find more layers) Same thing for the femininity thing, going from memory but omocat explained an interview how she initially wanted to make Sunny's gender to be selectable by the player but had to scrap it because she didn't have time, but again that can also be seen as this kid exploring gender in some way. Also that would have made the thing with Auby lesbian so I'm sure you would have loved it ;D Ok the actual last thing is: I get some Ace spectrum vibes, and maybe even Aro if one thinks Sunny's friend group is already star crossed enough to be so tighly connected. This is a story about friendship after all ...(But I'm Ace so I mostly think about the first one). I don't have any concrete proof, aside from the fact that Sunny never acts upon its desires, but that could have been just a thing of circumstance and not wanting the narration to go out of scope... Still, I get the Ace vibe. We are still under the queer umbrella right? :) The memes that compare him to that perv of Omoriboy seem to agree with the garlic bread interpretation xD

Hey hun! I just wanted to quickly pass by and say that I absolutely loved your videos abt Basil and Sunny ('s Bi panic) and their entire relationship status. I am a new Omori fan and in the fandom for almost two weeks now. It's not a long time but enough for me to already have specific comfort ships, characters and kin characters. And I have to say that Basil (and also Kel) definitely counts to one of my fav characters. And Sunny. C'mon... Everyone loves Sunny? At least I think like that. But anyway; Sunflower is an amazing ship and I first got really really unsure abt this entire thing because the fandom either loves it or hates it. And because of all those "toxic dynamic" relationship stuff going on I wasn't sure if I would be allowed to even ship them in the first place. I am a pretty good people analyzer. And I honestly already knew how Basil and Sunny are like before I watched videos abt those two. People saying "it's a problematic and abusive ship" should at least TRY to understand them... But that's just my opinion. Sunflower gives me a lot of comfort honestly. It's this entire trope with two broken people seeking comfort and warmth in each other because no one else seems to give it to them. And I relate to that. Being mentally ill myself (without putting myself into the victim role in here) makes me understand them in an extremely overpowering way and I think it's amazing. I’d also like to mention that sunflower would be extremely codependent during the main game, but this is likely bc basil could only confide in sunny bc sunny is the only one who knows the truth and the only person who he can confide in- that’s why I believe after the true ending, basil will be able to get help, and will be able to talk abt it with other people, causing the codependency to lessen a LOT. That’s just my personal opinion though, so personally I think they could be pretty healthy a lil while after the main game ^^

Honestly, I'd love if you did more videos like this. As a suggestion, maybe even just looking at the other 4 main characters through the lens of queerness and why some people do or don't see them as queer. Obviously none of the others have quite as much evidence as these two, but I feel like in some ways it's even more fun because it's more debatable. Your not building an argument as to why their queer in canon, your building an argument as to why queer people see them as queer. Aubrey would be fun to explore in that way as so many people see her relationship with Kim as potentially romantic. Hero too actually could be good as so many people see him as Bisexual when in canon he's only ever shown feeling for one person. It'd also be fun to see you talk about potentially why people often view Basil and Sunny as Autistic, if you feel comfortable discussing that that is. But only if this is something you have fun making, if it's not please don't feel like you have an obligation to make us video essays. I also wanted to say, the art in this video was so amazing and really helped with portraying some of the points. Some of the stranger stuff even made me a bit emotional. Also have more confidence in your work!!!!! If someone doesn't like the video yet still sat through 32 minutes of it tell them to go screw themselves. I think of Stranger as a representation of Sunny's guilt of abandoning Basil. It's why he, just like Something, is black and white, and why his name is so similar in that it implies something unknown. Headspace being centered around saving Basil again and again is Sunny trying to fulfill his desire to save Basil in real life. Something he can't do. Stranger is the one trying to push Sunny not just to accept the truth, but to save real Basil as well. Many of the things he says are what Sunny himself imagines Basil is thinking (to, possibly, a ridiculously accurate degree). He knows of the weight of the burden he left him with, he knows that Basil can't possibly handle it alone. It's ultimately what pushes Sunny to seek the truth in the main route, right before breaking the bulb and facing the Truth Sunny has a vision of Basil begging for help. That's when Sunny finally realises that he must face the Truth, or else Basil will die.

As someone who personally likes Sunny x Kel as much as Sunny x Basil, I was slightly hoping you would reach more into how close the two were as well - although Sunny's possible romantic feelings for Kel weren't as clear in Headspace, so I can understand why many people don't talk about it. Also, as a transmasc myself, my thoughts on the Mystery Potion handed by one of the Slime Sisters is that it's an easter egg showing an old design of Sunny that was scrapped and never used for the game. It could also be him trying to be effeminate in a way that reminds him of Mari, or how Mari used to be. I do really like the possibility of him being genderqueer and pushing the possibility down and hiding away a gender-changing potion in Headspace, as that lens is easy to see through and honourably valid.

Hey, this is a bit off topic for the video, but still, what do you think, about Suntan ship (Sunny x Kel)? I realize this is at first glance the most unlikely and most rambling spike, but listen. Suntan is the most unlikely but very healthy love match. Kel is a sloppy person (probably suffers from ADHD), but overflowing with energy and optimism to help in the most difficult situation you can have (don't forget that he saved two people with his actions) Sunny is a calm and thoughtful person, willing to listen to everything and be passionate about what his friends are passionate about (and more than friends), but he really needs someone mentally stable and warm. Sunflower ship is good too, but I'm still of the opinion that Basil would love Sunny to date someone he'd be really good with. Still, Daisy in the language of flowers symbolizes the phrase: "I'll be happy when you're happy". I'd love it if you'd pay a little attention to this ship in your brain system :3

Well, like she stated in previous video Kel and Sunny isn't as healthy as people thought. If you think Kel doesn't have massive mental health issue, you're wrong. Kel has a lot but he hides it far better than others. He mentioned about his fight with his brother and he laughed it off like it's not something serious and left him traumatized, that's not healthy. He buries all his problems The problem with them both, they ignore/hide whatever problem they have for the sake of others. And Sunny would definitely never say anything to Kel about that. They both would end up bottling their problems, and see who ends up explodes first. So yeah definitely not without trouble and baggage. Side note : Sunny has more likely chance to help if he sees someone in trouble, if not he will just ignore them.

​​​@@yoru8815tbf Kel was comfortable enough to talk about his fight with Hero in the graveyard. Yes he's downplaying how much Hero hurt him, but its a first step! He's the only person besides Basil who reached out to Sunny despite 4 years of radio silence, and the only one who actually got Sunny to open the door. He was willing to be vulnerable/risk rejection, if his hesitant response is any implication, and physical injury if you interpret the Hooligans' AI targeting Kel as Kel tanking punches for Sunny.

I have to be honest, there's something weird to me about Sweetheart and Spaceboy's dynamic being one about Sunny constantly trying to make sure Spaceboy is available to him at all times while trying not to get rid of the fanfiction in his mind, and that's weird to say because i don't really know _how_ to interpret their relationship in general. They're symbolic of Mari's troubled relations with Sunny, they're an exploration of Sunny not understanding the point of a relationship, and I don't even know where to start with the fact that Sweetheart gets cloned three times. I'll admit, my first playthrough of this game was _very_ skewed in terms of interpretation because I read Headspace not as a hollow dream world but as a separate supernatural plane of existence that connects to places like White/Black/Red Space (which do exist solely in Sunny's mind). Hell, I was surprised when Something wasn't revealed to be some sort of ancient demon that feeds off of Sunny's trauma to make itself stronger. I guess the thing is, it's hard for me to not imagine people like Spaceboy and Sweetheart as their own genuine people who actually live lives as residents of the global Headspace or something, but that's probably a symptom of my very strong object empathy and not any reflection on how I actually see the game's message, because frankly i don't think it matters whether Headspace is confined to Sunny's mind or if it's something larger. The story about healing from trauma and forgiving both yourself and others remains the same.

Even though my comment doesn't really have straight connection to the video itself, i want to point out something interesting about sunflower relationship that i found in the internet. So, maybe you could add it in other video. Anyways, sorry for long introduction. In short, there is a theory that explains Basil's feelings towards Sunny was actually revealled to him! You may not see any connection below, but it will actually gather some sense, believe me. In the Daisy quest, a girl asks you to find a flower puzzle, so she can give it to her huge crush Neb. The thing is, she described to be shy and gentle, with a loving personality who just adore flowers. And Neb being a smart guy fond of puzzles. It may seem like a coincidence, but what if I tell you that the quest actually based on Sunny's real life? In the hikkikomori route when Sunny throw away his things in the boxes from a bigger one, you can find a single puzzle that Sunny saved as a memory, even when he had a whole toys and games, it's still lying there, single to be saved. So we can assume that this puzzle indeed was important to him, and the quest with Daisy was an allegory of real confession of someone towards Sunny. And how we can quess who was it? Well it's already in a name of who gave us a gift. Daisy. And now, who resembles Daisy in headspace? I quess, you already know this, without me :D (I hope i explained everything alright, English is not my first language and i'm trying my hardest to improve it. Thank you for reading! Sunny's admiration for Hero is also prevalent in the real world sections of the game. There are multiple instances where Sunny let's his true thoughts bleed through the narration when he is awed at Hero's actions. An example is in the beginning of one of the days (don't remember which one) Hero cooks breakfast for Kel and Sunny. His reaction to this is "Wow..." Which has always stood out to me because it happens several times. This combined with HS Hero, its safe to say that seeing Real Hero has not changed Sunny's high opinion of him. Although, I think deep down Sunny does actually know to some extent how Mari's death effected him, even in the hikikomori route. Hints like how Hero is depicted as the sadness emotion in the Emotion Chart. The depressed Pluto seen in Black Space 2 - it is heavily implied that Pluto and Hero are connected (Pluto acting as a mentor to HS Kel and Real Hero has a sprite where his expression is literally Pluto's).
