great filters, own two of the 407 canister filters, also love the new led Bluetooth aquasky lights. the only thing fluval could change, include two bags of pre filter media, ior two more bags of biomax nstead of four bags of activated carbon, otherwise great product.

ayyy I got my new filter to work. key points from my experience is 1. let the water from the inlet side siphon into the filter while the filter has no water in it. 2. as it siphons away turn the filter on and wait for a bit and she comes to life!

Good video, almost perfect, but it would have been most helpful to show the cutting of the hose and a bit more in depth on how much hose to leave for each side (for example do we cut the hose evenly or not?). That's an important step you left out and it is probably the most worrisome step.

I bought the 307 it's my first canister filter and I love it. I'm using it on my 20 long turtle/fish tank I did have to cut the intake pipe shorter it was to high. I also didn't know to take the hose part off and flooded my floor while trying to clean my filter for first time tonight oops. I guess I forgot to read that step.

Our canister filters are gravity-fed systems, and as such must be located below the aquarium for optimal performance.

A pair of related questions, How do you know filter is fully primed? And, is it harmful to have water in filter before priming, plugging? That method was suggested to me years ago by Petland for 06 series. It was my go to for years.

We advise leaving the nozzle just above the water surface when priming an O7 canister with the priming device to ensure all water enters the input side and exits the output side, once the system is full you will see some water exit the output nozzle. Furthermore this also ensures most of the trapped air is evacuated.

If you have a canister filter (fluval or other brand) I would recommend replacing the carbon pouch with fluval biomax (or bio home) as it contains a large surface area for bacteria to grow which will help break down the ammonia in the tank to nitrate and nitrate to nitrate. In my opinion carbon is not needed unless you have treated your tank with chemicals for illness etc.

Carbon is optional but does serve many circumstances in an aquarium, it's lifespan is limited and it should be replaced regularly when being used, especially after being used for tasks such as removing medication after treatments, etc.

Hi Tony, monthly filter maintenance is recommended. You can replace your carbon monthly as well as clean or replace your filter sponges. Biomedia can last much longer in a filter, we recommend replacing half every 6 months. 😊

We prefer to operate canister filters with the output slightly below the water surface. You'll still get adequate oxygenation levels that way, and it won't be quite as loud!

I just bought 307 canister filter for my triangular corner tank and 2 sides of my tank is covered with wall so I have to place it on one corner of front side now the problem is one hose of either intake (in) or outlet (out) has to be long compare to another so what should be the right position of placing hose and which hose I keep long and which one short plz suggest ...?

The inlet hose is the more important of the two to ensure efficient entry of water into the filter, if the output side is longer that is no issue, try your best to avoid long dipping sections or loops, in general try to maintain an upward orientation to the tank from the filter.

Im using a stock tank pond and want to use this filter, but I have a problem. The rim on my stock tank is about 1-2” wide and I dont believe the U shaped hose adapter would fit over it and I would have no way to secure the hoses. Do these U shaped adapters have any wider versions?

They do not but 1 to 2 inches is a huge range, if it is 1 inch there will be no issue.

I had exactly the same problem on my 100 gallon tank, I have 2 inch wide glass bracing strips. I resolved this by abandoning the hose adaptors and making my own from 1 1/2 inch plastic plumbing pipe and bends, a straight piece of vertical pipe with a 90 degree bend, a short connecting piece of pipe and another 90 degree bend. Drill two small holes in the vertical section to attach suction cups and these stick to the outside of the tank. Paint the whole thing black and you can't even really see it.

ADVICE NEEDED for Filter Canister Placement After much research, i have found out that the fluval 306/406 or 307/407 are the filter canisters worth getting that is readily available in my area where i can buy and set up all within 1 week. (as opposed to the 1-3mth delay i have to wait if i were to buy a cascade penn plax 1000/1200) However, now there's a problem. The fluval manuals said that the base has to be placed below the turtle tank not more than 1.4m below water level (being gravity-fed, needing to siphon what not). BUT, i intend to get a 50 gallon turtle tub and do not wish to elevate it. Can i still work my way around the fluval whereby i can place it on the same level as the tub itself after i get the filter primed with no more air bubbles? Will this seriously damage the impeller and motor as they have to work harder for the "siphon"?

The challenge is that you need to maintain a distance of 7 inches or less from the water surface to the rim of the tub or aquarium for the inlet side and the filter needs to be below water level.

Check out the Pondguru on You Tube, he has lots of excellent advice!... the amount of filtration you use depends on what type of fish you have in the tank and how well stocked the tank is. 38 gallons is 143 litres. The Fluval 107 wouldn`t be suitable.

Mine 307 came with Bioterra filter media included....which was a complete disaster. The two bags of this stuff were not placed in plastic bags so the whole inside, every crevice of the filter was littered with fine sand and dust. Had to clean everything with pressurized air and do a through washing. It even had gotten in the locking brackets and made a scratching sound when I moved them. I hope this has already been adressed.

Hi Garry! If the hosing fits correctly on the tank, there's no reason you can't install the filter in that manner. Just make sure you're getting good water movement throughout the aquarium, and add a circulation pump if you aren't!

For optimized mechanical filtration, place the coarse media first to catch the larger pieces of debris, and the fine media after, to catch the smaller pieces of debris. If the fine media is first, it will become prematurely clogged!

Yes! The output flow of Fluval 07 Series canister filters can be safely reduced by up to 50%. In order to do this, move the grey top lever of the AquaStop valve away from the red bottom lever, up to an angle of 45 degrees.

Recently i brought it out to use, after about 1 month whitish silk or skin like started appearing, i hv changed all hoses and media, cleaned out the propeller unit but still the same. Its been going on for more than a week. I only keep a baby arowana. Pls advice.. thanks!

Yes after the filter is primed you may plug it in. It is usually easy to tell as you will hear the air discharging from the output nozzle or see it bubbling if you submerge it to check, when that stops it is primed.

The ribbed hosing can be pulled through the bracket during set-up to accommodate the position of the siphon and output tubes. We show about 8 inches on the siphon end as we are accounting for the length needed to clear the bracket and the approx. 4 inches into the aquarium.

Have watched quite many videos and none have given me the answer. I can't seem to understand how can the white sponges filter something out? Water will go through the path of least resistance, which is where the blue sponge is and also where the openings to the tray section exit. But the white sponges don't have any openings at the bottom, they are basically enclosed with little water flow. So how does this work or did I miss something?

This sponge tray design is generally what makes me reluctant to invest in buying this filter :/

The blue sponges will take the majority of the mechanical filtration load. The water which goes through the white sponges is for the most part relatively free of mechanical waste and enters the top of that module. The ribs on either side of the vertical module are very important as they provide a small amount of void space for the water to vertically travels along the back of the front side (blue sponges) post being filtered and allowing the white foam to load debris progressively from top to bottom.

For whatever reason I didn’t think about the fact that you could put bio media around the carbon or take the carbon out and use bio media even though I’ve done that a dozen times. why does the output nozzle need to be submerged ?

If it is not it will create a lot of splashing, greater rate of evaporation and substantially more noise. The ideal is to have it submerged just enough to avoid all what we just mentioned but to create good surface movement so it efficiently promotes a good gas exchange and ensures good oxygen levels for fish.

Hi Tony, set up the canister and plumbing, make sure the canister is empty (no water) and that only the inlet siphon is submerged, the output nozzle should be located just above the waters' surface before priming. Pump the priming handle a few times, you will hear the filter filling, when full, locate the output nozzle to the desired position and plug the unit in.

So this is very hypocritical. I’m not sure which video came out from Fluval first-either this one or the other one that has the intake and outtake directly next to each other. In this video you have them in opposite sides of the aquarium. Which one is the correct one?

Hello Francesca, thank you for your comment! There is no correct positioning of the input and output nozzle. The filter input and output should be placed in a way to provide your aquarium with the most water flow possible. This means that the input and output nozzles can be placed side by side or on opposite ends, it would depend on the individual aquarium. We hope this helps! 😁

Hi Mark, you can easily make one yourself! Make an incision in the center of a coarse foam filter block and insert the siphon tube strainer into it. We recommend rinsing the block every 2 weeks to ensure proper filtration performance. 👍

I just upgraded my 406 to 407. I noticed the media placement has changed. In the 406 the polishing pad was in the upper baskets. On the 407 the polishing pad (Quick Clear) is in the bottom basket with the bio foam. I’m curious why it changed. Thanks.

Stuart, good question. Given the other changes that took place for the 07 series in regards to the vertical pre-filtration module and foam employed along with the added improvements made to maintenance built into the media baskets we leveraged finer filtration at a lower level to benefit the biological and chemical filter media that is positioned above it.

I own this. I got it on sale. If I paid full price, I would be so angry. 1. It advertises that it’s for a 10-30 gallon tank. But the intake tube it too long for a 10, and there is NO WAY the media it came with was enough for a 30 gallon... at least not performance I’d expect from a canister. 2. The tubing is a nightmare. The out put is so massive on a ten gallon, and it’s impossible to switch out, without ‘guessing’ what will work. They don’t offer any kind adapter for standard 1/2” tubing. The pre-filter tray makes no sense. It divides the water up, and passes it through one of two sets of sponges. That ‘set up’ takes up HALF the canister. Why?!

@@fluval I'm not disputing that but I have owned 2x fluval 405's and have been running them for 9 years, out of the box the filters are terrible in terms of how they are setup, I had them running in stock form for about a year before coming to the conclusion that they are useless in that configuration. I replaced the sponge tray completely with one solid block foam which is far superior to using the 4x useless sponges the filter comes with, so much so that filter polishing pads are no longer needed, I then filled the four trays with ehime substat pro. It's day and night on how well they perform to the point that I don't even need to clean them, they have just gone 9 months without cleaning, no loss in flow and the bio section were still spotless which is fantastic considering i have 4x large predatory fish in the tank one of which is 18" long and the smallest is 15".

Brought this 107 6 days ago , the noise is unbearable from the motor . Took out empellor & nothing wrong with it , put it bk in & started pump up again still noisy. Fed up with it today ( 12 the march 22 ) so took it to rubbish tip & thrown away. What a waste of nearly £ 100 !! Will never buy fluval again . Advise not to buy this rubbish . Going to buy different brand now . Good luck peps who Brought this .

@@fluval hi , yes so iam I, I had a different brand canister filter which started leaking so I looked & brought the 107 . It had so many gd reviews so I thought yes go for it . Straight from the time I turn it on , up to 6 days the noise from the motor was unbearable as I have the tank in my bedroom & could not sleep . Now bk using leaking canister filter & do think it's going to last long . Thrown dwn tip now so I don't know what u can do now as nolonger have it . Thanks for the reply anyway, I'll see what yr headquarters ( uk ) says tomorrow.

It is too complicated. Why don't they just make it "ready to go" kit? I prefer easy kit.

no biomedia? not impressed there! Would love to know the process whereby product managers would actively decide to NOT INCLUDE something so important, yet still bother with a little pouch of carbon? A prime example of bean counters having final say. Cost savings / profit margin is what its all about in the end. Put the right dang media in the filter and charge a few bucks more to cover the cost. Have some self respect Fluval!
