wow - I'm an absolute novice yet understood everything you said. Clear, concise, to the point, easy to follow (I think the excellent camera work helps too). Now I need to find some water and practise what you taught. In my opinion, Very well done! Thank you very much.

Exceptional advice! I am new to fly fishing and need to master this cast because I find myself in tight quarters sometimes where a normal cast just catches bushes :)

@StcroixNick All things being equal a softer mid action rod will be a little easier. The trick is to make sure your D-Loop is large enough to lift the line. And it must loop and hang down behind your shoulder. The further out in front of you the D-Loop is, the more difficult the Roll cast is to execute

@twotells12 definitely works well from an elevated position. Easy to get a nice D-loop and load the rod, and watch how it all gets organized.

Not sure I'm happy to hear you were using a Vantage, as since I use one I won't be able to blame the rod anymore for my roll casting inadequacies! haha. I also use an SA line too, what a coincidence.

@gmstuart1 For the CI the requirement os for a 'static roll cast' i.e a roll cast in two parts with a clearly defined pause in between. I do reach back a little further just prior to throwing the forward cast - it's not entirely intentional :) But yes, I suppose it does help tension things up and increase the stroke lenght a little

@ JD sesller. It sounds highly likely you are being far too aggressive on the forward delivery cast. Start slow and smooth, and accelerate smoothly toward the final stop. "Start Slow, Fishing Fast"

@wcodyw1990 Thanks. Personally I think you couldn't go past a Sage "Vantage" package. Rod, reel and line with a lifetime guarantee on the rod - you can't miss. It's a Sage Vantage I use in that clip (painted white)

Carl...would you rather see a CCI candidate you are testing roll cast in one fluid motion or see them set the anchor on grass and then make the forward cast? Also, in slow motion it almost looks like a slight back cast after you pull the line back....is that to make your D loop larger or is that the trick to the tighter loops? It seems like the move back at the last second really sets up your nice forward cast....I feel like I can stop the rod high and still get larger loops on this cast....g

Are you using a Royal Wulff Ambush Triangle Taper fly line? I ask because you effortlessly cast your line out there. When I am in the river it seems to grab my line more than yours.

this will probably only work if you stood in water, if your stood on a pier then theres a good changes you`ll snag you fly in the grass. Amazing footage and casting though. 5 star

Greetings Carl, Could you please clarify the roll vs switch cast? From this fragment of your DVD I'd say the casts you perform on the river are switch casts and what you practice on grass is roll casting as I see it. For me the difference between the two is the size of D-loop, the amount of line stick and pace. Simply, switch is bigger D-loop, little line stick and air-born forward cast. Roll is a lot of line stick, small D-loop and water-born forward. Will appreciate your comment.
