Fly casting problems. How to fix your fly casting. Does your leader often end up in a pile instead of straightening completely? This is a common complaint of many fly fishing anglers. Often times, the cause of the leader and/or fly line falling in a pile or not straightening is where the angler is stopping the rod on the final delivery stroke.
In this video, FFF Certified Instructor Capt. Chris Myers shows how to make a better fly casting stroke and then demonstrates a common cause and correction for the leader falling in a pile. While this is not the only cause, it is one of the most common fly casting mistakes.
Capt. Chris Myers offers saltwater light tackle and fly fishing charters one hour from Orlando and Disney. www.flatsfishi...

After a 55 year hiatus I came back to fishing and forgot nearly all I knew back then. As a kid I could throw out a lot of line and hit my target within 6 inches most of the time. I could feed my family of 5 a meal with catches from my day's fishing in my neighborhood stock ponds. More recently I had every problem you covered in this video. I bought just about the cheapest set up in the store. Its a Martin kit, 5 wt and the rod is about 8 ft long. I could barely cast 20 ft of line and tippet. lol After half an hour of practicing your tips I'm seeing a vast improvement. I still have to watch myself closely, but when I get the technique right my 9 ft leader & tippet go nearly 40 feet and hit close to the lid of a 5 gallon bucket a lot of the time. Thanks for the video.

A common problem with very cheap rods is the action is extremely soft. This makes them very easy to over bend. Soft rods require a very delicate touch.

Thanks for the tip. I've been fly fishing for about 39 years and sometimes you have to go back to the basics and fine tune your techniques.

Perfect. Coming from 30+ years of spinning rods where line the timing of line release determines the cast rather than rod tip position. This is a significant issue I'm having since I must remain conscious of my technique to overcome spinning rod muscle memory. Hope someday fly casting can feel just as natural.

Thank you! Hardly ever get out anymore and I finally went to a lake to just fish for bluegills the other day and I totally lost my groove. This tells me exactly where I was going wrong.

Thank you for taking time to help us improve. However, even I can straighten my leader with only 30" of line outside the rod tip, but its not so easy when I'm trying to cast 25 yards. Again thank you.

Aaahaaaaa Theres my answer to my obvious mistake 😂👌🏻 thank you sir! I have a question you’d surely be able to answer what am I doing wrong: When I have a very limited space of where I can cast it happens sometimes my fly or worse my nymph is hitting my rod. How can I prevent that from happening?
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers Жыл бұрын
Due to the limited space, you are making a very short stroke which is causing a tailing loop - studio.kzbin.infouAqqo-dkE9w/edit Do you have room to make a roll cast instead?

Can you show from the back or front how to do it? I don't know how your pole is angled from the angle.
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers 11 ай бұрын
I have found that, on camera, that angle is not very helpful. I am guessing you are wondering whether my rod is straight up or tilted out. Mine is tilted so that the hook is well away from my head and it gives me a much longer range of motion. I just got my First fly outfit today and everytime I raise my rod to cast my line falls down the eyelets and the rope I'm using in place of a fly gets caught in the first eyelet how do I fix that
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers 3 жыл бұрын
You need to have 15-20ft of flyline outside your tip to start. Trying to start with only a couple feet outside the tip will result in what you mentioned and also make it very difficult to start feeding out line and you make false casts. Pull 20ft out of the tip and use a roll cast to get it straightened out - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKGYq4Z4jdtogdE

I fixed this error, but it still falls in a pile. Could there be a different reason?
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers Жыл бұрын
Your back cast mostly likely is not getting straight before you begin to come forward. Either from a wide loop, improper timing, or some of both. Until the forward stroke is pulling on a straight line, the rod is not fully bending and stroke is being wasted. Many people often have so much wasted stroke they are forced to compensate with extra power which usually does not work well either. Either way, this will cause the line to fail to straighten in the front. Check out this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3eVdKmEnKuSgpo If you still can't get it to work, I offer video analysis which can identify and fix most casting issues - www.orlandoflycasting.com/video-casting-analysis.html

Being able to make your leader pile up is helpful in some cases in order to get a slightly longer drag free drift in a tough run. lol Learn to control it.

Almost always a result of a stroke that is to short for the amount of line being cast or a lot of the stroke wasted straightening out a not so good cast the stroke before.

A jerk instead of a smooth speed up and stop will also create a tailing leader.

I never had this issue until I started doing it the "right" way. I never used anything but monofilament as my leader and once I switched to a fly fishing leader this became a massive issue. At least I know what to look for now. Stupid Yellowstone. I should just go back to mono and not worry about the "right" way.
