Fly Fishing Eastern Oregon April 2023

Join Fin & Feather with special guest Shawn as we go fly fishing. We visit one our favorite Eastern Oregon rivers to chase wild red side rainbows. Smolts will eat anything, when you start hooking those little guys it's best to move or change tactics. The salmonfly nymphs are migrating to the shallows in April, that's what the bigger redsides are usually keyed on.

Again awesome video & looks fun,1 question,know it's a pain but I never wade without a wader belt or wading staff,I learned my lesson the hard way,full waders aren't fun & ruins the day,tight lines & bent rods 🤙

The fish in the deschutes don't get that big, rarely over 14". but in all honesty, most of these small ones look like steelhead smolt.

2:45 why does that rainbow not look like the redband rainbows? usually the deschutes fish have the distinctive red band. same with the steelhead. at least back when i lived in oregon. moved to alaska in 2006.

That's a great question, unfortunately I don't know why some have more vibrant colors than others.

@Andy-zj3dc I found out today that they released a bunch of steelhead somlts a couple of days before I was out there. I think that was what they were.
