"You can use any floating line because that jig is gonna dominate the cast anyway." Hahaha.

Almost! The only exceptions are heavy or deep currents where you absolutely need to use an aggressive sinking line to cut through

The way fly fishing has evolved over the last several years has been great for the sport. Techniques like this, which would have been ignored if even considered, have opened up whole new areas to fly fishing that in the past would have been inaccessible. Some might view this as being too close to gear fishing still, but in my opinion, it’s just another tool to have in your arsenal to dredge up fish when traditional methods simply won’t reach them. Thanks for sharing!

By far the most helpful streamer video on KZbin for sure, I’ve caught some of my best fish on the fly with woolly buggers. Definitely need to get some articulated streamers and film a video with them. Cheers for your help, you guys rock

Ok Dave, I’m gonna try it with some cool jigs I made for smallmouth bass on my light spinning rod, but I’ll use my new 8 weight Orvis Clearwater fly rod. I got a good feeling about some deep plunge pools that I got skunked on a few weeks ago. Thanks for the commando fly fishing tip. I might wear my bicycle helmet just in case I might get clobbered in the back of the head with the jig.

Ha! Yeah. Honestly if it was up to me I'd tell ppl that want to catch fish to get insanely adept with an u/l spin outfit and the dynamics of jigs. But... since we have to fly fish we do our best to mimmick! 🤣🍻🥳

And I thought I was 'outside the box'. I've been fishing jighead streamers and nymphs for over thirty years but I prefer 1/100 to 1/32 oz. jigheads on 4 to 6 weight fly rods. These are much easier to fly cast than the 1/8 and 1/4 oz. jigheads and feel more sporting but the heavier jigheads will get you down faster and are better for certain conditions, like deeper, hard running water. No matter how you weight a streamer you will not get down as fast or any faster than a jighead. It's a supreme design. Rides great too. With nymphs I weight the shank also so I can get down quick with a smaller hook. The only downside to jigheads are the hook gaps are smaller with the jighead in the way. On the plus side besides getting down faster jigheads get hung up a lot less than conventional weighted streamers.

biggest point is - nothing drops like a jighead :) is perfect! But not all jighead hooks are created equally - to say the least! :)

Wow. I wrote a couple of days ago asking if you could mention the gear you use and you reply was appreciated. I just came across this video from last year and it's perfect. Thanks. OK, next question. I have always fished in full waders because the water in the Eastern Sierra is frigging cold in the Spring. Now that I'm retired when Covid is over I'm going to try some warmer, summer fishing. You guys always seem to wet wade. Can I ask what gear you favor? Thanks again. BTW your cinematography is incredible.
@jensenflyfishing4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all that and great to hear. We wet wade a lot but the shoulder seasons are bitterly cold here too! But in wet wading season we wear Orvis Pro Field Pants Lt. Built for bird hunting, quick dry, amazingly robust on bush bashing. We use Orvis ultralight wading boots and wader socks. Hope that helps. 😊🍻

Excellent video as always. Great instruction and advice. Definitely a purist's nightmare! Real fly fishers catch fish!

Yup, this method isn't sexy but when you know you need to get deep to where the fish are holding and you want to do it quickly and efficiently, it's really effective!

Nice video. Is there any technical reason its beneficial to use a fly rod instead of a spinning setup, or it is just an aesthetics thing?
@jensenflyfishing5 жыл бұрын
Only because you may want to do other things with a fly rod should opportunity arise. Otherwise, launch how you like 😊
@ED855 жыл бұрын
Two reasons: A) You don't want to buy spin rod because you prefer fly fishing B) You fish "fly fishing only" stretch/part of water. No technical benefit. Oh and you actually do not want to put flies on spin rods, that's an identity crisis, buy Berkley power baits and jig them, they are efficient as well!

Did you mean it when you said you recommend 3ft of 40lb tied to12ft of 14lb mono as a leader for jig streamers on floating lines? Never imagined using such a long leader with streamers or jig streamers.
@jensenflyfishing3 ай бұрын
yes. Most people think that streamers can be fished with short leaders and it doesn't matter. Except, one little problem... if you hammer the water surface with the fly line and butt section and a heavy streamer, how many fish are spooked to hell and back as that all lands in their awareness window? There's a lot more to consider than just hammer it in there and catch a fish, which more often than not explains why there are more slow streamer days than most people want to admit. Change a few details, settings and approaches to things can lead to greater successes. Our Streamers & Muddlers course might be of interest at this page: www.patreon.com/jensenflyfishing/shop

As usual lovely scenery etc, pity to spoil it with monstrous lures.
@jensenflyfishing3 жыл бұрын
well, true to those that don't like streamers but it is a valid method of going after the big, deep fish that are looking for an easy meal. In the world of how-to videos this one is likely the one that gets the most & largest brown trout in big rivers most of the season :) But up against sighted or rising trout... you know where our hearts are! :)

That was a 1648 modified v-hull with a 4-stroke Merc 40/30 jet. It was a perfect motor for 2 ppl with camping gear and to row. We run a 1648 now with Evinrude 2-stroke but all motorized tilt and all that adds a lot of weight which affects rowing. CHeers

I fly fish most of the time, but when it comes to fishing like this, I grab my spinning rod. It is SOOO much more efficient than messing around with fly gear. Obviously I’m not a fly fishing purist, but when it comes to casting 1/4 jigs,I’m using conventional gear.
@jensenflyfishing2 жыл бұрын
1000% But being a stubborn ff that loves to find a way to do it on a fly rod, here I am 🤣 I've always said a great spin angler will out fish a great ff 80%+ of the time, but the how, the sense of place and the camera work that go along with ff can't be matched consistently. But... personal preference there of course! 😄🍻

Hey not that you have problems with feeling good about your self doing this kind of thing with the fly rod, I am gonna confess now that I used jig head streamers with European style nymphing rig and twitched and jigged the "damn thing" across the creek under a willow branches having a direct contact with the "fly " all the time.... so... I got the biggest trouts by doing this and I am not even sorry!
