We do some early winter fishing on the Arkansas River Tailwater in Pueblo, CO. This section of the Ark is filled with tons of rainbows averaging 12-14 inches with many fish caught in the 16-inch range. However, there are some tanks in there that grow upward of 20 inches, as we find out.

Our Takes: The tailwater becomes fishable from the bank on Nov. 15 each year when the flows from Pueblo Reservoir are dropped to somewhere between 150 cfs and 50 cfs. It generally takes a couple weeks for the water to clear and then, game on! As each day goes by, the river becomes clearer and the fish become more selective.
Flies: Red Rock Worm (16-18), Foam Back Baetis Emerger (20-22), Purple Haze (28-20), Grey Sprout Midge (20-22).
Tackle used: 5 weight rods, 9-foot 5X leaders, 5X fluorocarbon tippet to the top fly and 6X fluorocarbon to the trail fly.
