Fly Fishing, Tying an early season Killer Cormorant

Cheeks - Jungle Cock
Head - Scruffy Dubbing (Natural Boosted)
Cormorants are super effective on any occasion and this is down to the profile as well as its general ability to be either a nymph or a lure. I have many flavours in my box but this one for early season is hard to match.

The ultimate multipurpose pattern. Varieties and variations are almost limitless. As are the methods of using/presenting the fly. It just inspires confidence for all experience levels of anglers. The cherry on top for this version is just how much difference the dubbing loop thorax completes the fly. Working as a seamless thorax hackle combination. Splitting the thread works. Overall it adds up to less time than selecting preparing tying in a hackle. With an overall positive improvement of both durability and effectiveness.

Thanks Lindsay, nice pattern! Being new to British fly patterns I'm curious as to what the cormorant imitates. It looks like a fry or small minnow but it is commonly fished static on a washing line. If I'd been given a cormorant fly last season I would have fished it as a small streamer, in shallow water with fairely fasy 6 to 12 inch strips (and may do a bit of that anyway). Cheers!

It is considered to be a catch all fly. It can imitate a nymph trying to break through the surface. It is also fished in a lot of different methods. You can put a team of three of them (usually an attractor cormorant on the top dropper and two more natural ones. You can fish them in a slow figure of 8 with any line you wish or if you go a bit deeper you can give them a fairly fast retrieve. It is one of the very few flies there isn't an actual 'correct' way to fish it.

Sorry for the silly questions, but I see a lot of cormorant patterns from KZbin tiers in the UK. I'm not heard of it in the US, but it is obviously (as you folks say) a cracking fly judged on the abundance of tiers posting videos. #1 Is it fished in rivers or lochs or both? #2 It sounds as though it is fished as a nymph so does it represent a specific insect? I fish lakes a ton and I have found that content from the UK and Canada are quite educational. What makes this a cormorant? Is it because the wing is on top? VS a Dial Bach which has a "beard" instead of a "wing"?

It is not a true cormorant I suppose just one of the many varieties. I think what defines it for me is the profile and black wing.
