Back in the 70's I remember Roland did a show where he used a flyrod and had made a lure from a small Rapala floating minnow shaving the lip off, removing the trebles, drilling a hole in the end and inserting a single hook in with epxoy... he caught an 8 lb bass on the show with it! I never did make one, but now that I'm thinking of it....

I like the 8wt Orvis Bank Shot shooting head fly line on an 8wt rod. Much less effort, much fewer false casts, and less tiresome, especially when sitting in a kayak where you feel like you are casting uphill with a traditional weight forward line. nice thing about fly fishing for a bass angler is that you can almost instantly recast if you need to whether it’s a miss you can shoot the line right back to the spot to try again no need to reel in or grab a second rod also if somethin jumps off, splashes or boils behind you you can lift the fly line and drop it over there in an instant. you can even dump your back cast if you see activity you want to attack also so many casts you can use to manage heavy structure like overhangs and limbs etc that would impede a normal cast bow and arrow casting tuck casting roll casting temple casting these techniques really keep the fly in the water in the precise spot you want it and you can PIVOT without having to spend time reeling in

What you need Roland is a casting basket. You wear it like a fanny pack. It holds your fly line off the water or ground. It keeps line from tangling around your feet or weeds. It lets the line shoot out with fewer issues. It also is handy to put your rod in when unhooking fish too.

That was great, glad you did the bass video after the bluegill on a fly rod. The shots over your shoulder where we could see the lure & line are the best, but I could see it getting a little iffy for the camera dude, if he doesn't move out of the way he could catch a popping bug upside the head at 3-400 feet per second. A chest mounted go pro might be nice next time. How 'bout another fly fishing video with some type of diving fly? Perhaps a wet fly from the canoe (in case it gets hung up in some vegetation) It was great to see a bass video with something different.

Did I miss the part where you explained why you did 9 wt line with an 8 wt reel / rod? I am assuming you did that to get more bend, flex and further distance out of it. Also makes it less work to sling rope all day doing this video with that combo. I also think that extra +1 wt mismatch lets you feel strikes better on the line. I am however; not the expert on that nor claim to be. I am a computer programming instructor at a college. But I would love to hear your thoughts and description on feeling the strike. Also you left out the part, that a 2 lbs bass on a fly rod feels like you're catching a whale! Take care and I'm anxiously awaiting your next video. These videos are like getting Christmas presents more than once a year.

The fly line at the feet? Not really. It's pretty thick stuff. And if you shoot most of your line out, it's negligible. And if you begin fishing closer, just take a moment to reel in the extra stuff. For a beginner, you may find yourself stepping on it. It's all a learning curve. They also make baskets you strap to your waste to hold the extra line (or you can make your own out of a little tub)

Roland needs to re shoot this video with a little canoe action & title it "Catching Bass with Unusual Lures" and he'd probably get 10 times the views, your "average joe" sees Fly Rod or Fly Fishing in a video title and they're outta' there. In fact I think there should be a Roland Martin series called "Catching Bass with Unusual Lures" or "Throwing the Weird Stuff" where every couple of weeks he does a video on an unusual or rarely used lure or method. Fly fishing, Helicopter Lures, Oddball Crankbaits, soft plastics and so on.... There again, I think I should be his associate producer 😁
