Amazing comment by Flip at the end. I am a newer fly angler and wanted a streamer rod in 7 weight. Local fly shop had me sold on the Reddington Vice due to its fast action. I couldn't cast it worth a darn. Mad River lad told me to try the Ion Echo XL. My response was what I had been told, "Isn't that rod too slow for what I want?" I tried it and then promptly ordered it from Mad River outfitters. Love that rod. It's about what you're comfortable with, not solely what the market says.

I bought an Axiom II-X 7wt over the new Helios D. The Axiom II-X is a phenomenal rod. I bought it for smallmouth bass. For me, it's super comfortable and feels effortless to cast big bugs. I like Flip and Brian's philosoph on all this. They're always presenting good information, and it's appreciated.

I use both rods, and totally agree with you about how these great rods compare to each other! Great review... and as always, it's really a pleasure for me to see you both talking about fly fishing!

First another fantastic video. I think anyone can cast any fly rod and get to be proficent with it. That doesn't mean every rod can carry 30-40ft of head. But, I can't help but think of something I heard. Beware of the guy with 1 gun vs the man with many. It is a safer bet the guy with 1 gun knows how to use it and knows everything about it. The point being, get good with 1 fly rod.

Care to elaborate? I allways thought that fishing rod is a personal preference? I HATE slow and moderate/medium action rods that load down to the handle or even to the middle so i stick to fast and relatively stiff Orvis helios 3d and Hardy NSX X and im a newbie! I'd rather cast bad and get punished for bad timing knowing that i love the rod im fishing than fish a noodle and hate every second of casting it

I agree but it doesnt work for me. I feel mote comfortable hitting my target throwing bigger loops. Especially with bigger flys. I don't trout fish much these days and big flies for bass who arent picky it doesnt matter too much how horrible the fly smacks down. B
