I lot of training is a verbal flow. Then you do a quick check on the lists to make sure you have checked off all the items. The more you do it the more common it becomes and it becomes muscle memory. I've been flying for 30 years and am so surprised at how proficient and professional you are. Clearly you had some great instruction but your obviously incredibly intelligent. Your skill and knowledge level is amazing for the amount of time you have been flying. You make this look easy, yet you are flying in some of the most complex airspace in the country. There are people who are just born to be pilots, and you are clearly one of them. I'm flying into San Carlos tomorrow and I know I am going to be way more stressed about this than you were!

I'm a newbie to this channel but I am thoroughly enjoying it. My Dad used to have a flying school back in the early 2000s and we used to go all over the place (Southern France mainly) and see the sights. I learned to fly by 16 and got as far as my first solo but end of school exams & college all took precedence at the time. Oh I do miss that sensation as you rotate and watch the world shrink away (slowly), nipping through the clouds, sitting above the cloud level in sunshine, knowing below you is dull and raining 😂

Typically the fear comes from not being in control of the plane because someone else is flying for you. Once you actually take control of the plane then the fear tends to subside.

In February of this year (2023), I was home sick with food poisoning, watching videos on KZbin, and this video was suggested to me. I wasn't watching aviation videos on KZbin at the time, but this looked interesting (and I'm a Bay Area native), so I checked it out. I watched it 3 times and got inspired to look into flight lessons in my area. I went on my discovery flight on February 20, and yesterday I passed my private pilot check ride.🥳Thank you for inspiring me to pursue a dream and see it through. Next up, instrument training.

A guy I flew with said he could tell a who'd be a good pilot by the way they drive in traffic; I'll bet you drive well too... :) Great job - great vid. PS - I know you're a software engineer and flying is a hobby. I would give you a 90% chance of a fighter out of SUPT if you ever wanted to climb that mountain. Also, as an engineer - test pilot and astronaut is also viable. Just saying - if you ever see those guys/gals and wonder "if I could do that" - I'm here to tell you the odds are excellent.

Stevie, Thank you for sharing your flying with me and taking me along for the ride! Ever since I was 3 1/2 years old I wanted to become an airline pilot. Unfortunately where I lived precluded me realizing that dream. And shortly after passing my 40th anniversary I finally made my peace and buried that dream. Today, a good decade later, I would not be able to pass a medical. But even so, my eyes always brim with water when I watch your take-offs. Finally, I found a home. I recently joined a group of senior software engineers that are pilots on slack and I infact got my own FlightGear Sim. Earlier on my life all I wanted was to be a pilot, at the time , about 8 years now I had little lung pressure and vision, both most importantly finance was the issue. Went to college late, but still managed to became a see backend, four years into. I finally found a family, live your dreams amigo and never settle to circumstances infact never plateau. 🙌 You got a new sub Stevie.

I've never been a fan of the glass cockpit. The steam gauges are so much easier to read, my opinion anyway. Maybe because I've built up years of brain training reading them.

I recently converted to a Cirrus glass cockpit after flying steam gauge C172s for 17 years (and instrument rated most of those years). I would say with the modern Foreflight and iPad flying especially with Stratux (provides ADS-B in and attitude information) with Synthetic vision enabled, you are not missing too much from not going G1000. The main advantage flying a glass cockpit is a fully integrated system certified for primary navigation which is great for giving you confidence everytime flying IFR approaches and flying complicated missed approaches on autopilot. Stevie are you instrument rated yet?

@@acerbus02 agreed. Glass cockpit usually adds at least $100k to the plane, you cannot install gauges piece-meal which makes upgrades difficult and expensive too. Modern iPad flying give you most of the glass cockpit advantages already without incurring the $100k+ cost.

I’m from Shelby township Michigan. I’m about 8 miles from Silver Lake. I use to fly a lot and had to give it up because of health issues. I’m 71 years young and 22 at heart. I’ve had a few planes in my life time. My favorite was my cub 180, just point into a breeze and she would liftoff. I bought her in Alaska when I worked up there. I used her to go back and forth to work. I’m Alaska, west Texas, northern Michigan Utah, Colorado and Oklahoma. I had her for 45 years. I watch you on You Tube. I lived in a condo complex called Harbortown in San Mateo in the 80s and worked in Foster City (walking distance). I wasn’t a pilot at the time but I drove past the San Carlos airport many times on US101 and always wanted to take lessons there. I think the area has changed so much that I didn’t recognize any of the stuff in your B roll. But it’s still a beautiful place to visit. (I didn’t enjoy the culture there so I moved back to Chicago). @@bayflight What I was told years ago was that it was named that specifically because it's the closest airport to Oracle headquarters... I don't know what strings they had to pull to get that to happen, but it was long enough ago that they probably weren't Unicode! 🤓

Won’t be long before he’ll be ready for flying lessons, then he can solo on his 16th Birthday, and get his drivers license the next day. That’s what I did.

@@maz.mcdermott22 you're very lucky to have that many hours at such a young age. I started flying just before 15 but I haven't flied much since then because it costs so much (I'm now 16.5) but I'm going to start flying a lot when I turn about 17 because i now have a job! Make sure you get a job immediately once you turn 16 to pay for being a pilot mainly if you're trying to fly commercially (for money) such as in the airlines. This stuff is very expensive so start saving that money for flight school when you turn 18 so then you can pay lots of it off and so you don't have much debt. It doesn't really matter what job you get, just get a job. I'm working at McDonald's rn as my first job and it just helps with getting work experience for more advanced jobs. GL with your pilot stuff and remember that if you plan to fly commercially, get a job as soon as you turn 16! Have fun

The last time I was at the San Carlos Airport was back in December 2007. My family recommended to go through the Hiller Aviation Museum. It was a blast to see and they had at that time the forward fueslage of a 747.

Like many other commenters here, as well as watching all of Stevie's videos, I have also watched most of the Oshkosh videos... I enjoy the ones that have the ATC audio most of all, and that is a music that just flows from Stevie's tongue as well. Love it!

Love your V-Tail, we had a 1954 V-35 Bananza when I was about 14 years old my parents traded it for a new 1977 Cardinal RG. My brother and I were with my Mom flying home to Cincinnati, Oh from Oshkosh Wi. In the Beechcraft before we bought the Cardinal. We flew into a severe thunderstorm that center told us wasn’t bad, until we flew into it. Then they said oh we see it now The rate of clime indicated 3,000 feet up then 3,000 feet down several time’s my Mom was flying and she slowed it down to maneuvering speed, put the gear down and we came out above Midway airport in Chicago. Mom told center that we wanted to land at Midway so we got on the ground and taxied to a spot on the ramp. We opened the door and there was a car pulled up next to us and wanted a landing fee. Mom payed the fee and said we won’t be here long. We checked the tail and the rest of the aircraft and everything was ok. We stayed about 2 hours then headed home. My brother and I were so afraid the tail was going to come off because of the story’s we had heard. The tail worked perfectly, and didn’t come apart. N3508B was the tail number. It had the electric prop control. No mods. I really miss that airplane. Great video as always. Can’t wait until you put out the next on.

I watch your video all the times and I watched your journey from Michigan to LA. You are an amazing pilot. Watching your attitude and your calmness by taking your bird up there is such a wonder and easy feeling I sensed in you. I believe anyone can learn to be a pilot, but you were born with with it. Amazing! I noticed you copied sqawk code and departure frequency while taxiing! Good skills! Ground controllers annoy me if they do that and usually I slow way down or stop to copy that or put them on standby and just wait until I get to the run up area to copy.

Just saw your video from a year ago. I owned a 1955 F35 Bonanza that looked a lot like yours, but was blue and gold over white. I lived in the San Diego area, but worked in Santa Ana. My office was three blocks from the Millionaire FBO at John Wayne airport, so I flew to work every day, which put a pile of actual IFR in my log. Good luck with your KZbin page.
