I have been extremely lucky in the 70 years that I have been on this planet. I have been able to combine ,if you will, two of my favorite pastimes. Bird hunting and fly fishing / tying. I like to hunt pheasants, grouse-ruffed and sharptail, Hungarians and ducks. I have been able to harvest the birds and utilize their feathers to create flies that usually catch fish. When I was younger, I also trapped fox ,raccoon, muskrat and mink and was also able to use their fur. I also have been able to show these pastimes to my sons and several of their friends. Thanks for the great videos.

Gems of NJ... Who knew 😂... As a NJ guy that is so cool. (Usually NJ and fly fishing are not exactly synonymous) Thanks for sharing these pheasant skin flies.. super useful stuff and totally underrated. Been a helpful material as I "dive" into streamer fishing and tying

Thanks for posting a video with a smaller streamer. I'm a trout fisherman that mainly fishes with 4-weight kits, sometimes 5, and I could throw this (line taper and head-length permitting) with both.

Tied a variation of this on a size 8 jig hook balanced got a fish first cast. would love to see a tutorial of you tying one like that with saddle for the tail but I can only hope. If your around the driftless region of minnesota I'll give you one I tied since you've inspired most of my time at the vise

Great informitive video as usual. Really enjoyed watching this one. I normally tye crappie jigs, but stretching out a bit and learning new techniques. I may see if I can get it down to 1-1/2"s and see what I can catch. Thank you for posting.

I like the trick about using the pad if paper for mixing epoxy. We used to have a system like that when I worked in an auto body shop. We would mix body filler (bondo) on a square pad of paper, and when we're done, throw the top sheet away.

"Everyone should struggle with five minute epoxy..." Been there, done that!! Keep up the good work, young man. I keep thinking I'll run into on one of those northern streams. Maybe someday.

I was looking for a tying video for our PHWFF advanced vet's class could used but the critical part was it needed to use inexpensive material. I didn't know you for a small fly (trout) guy and just decided to click on my subscription to see what you had that was new. To my surprise I saw this video. You have opened new doors for many tyers. Keep up the outstanding work you magnificent bastard! LOL Also, that new Ahrex PR378 hook IS awesome. Been tying a bunch of weedless pike patterns (yours) on it.

I've had a dozen pheasant skins, for 40 some years, I think I just found a use or them. That's a good looking fly........
@zafotbeeb
@zafotbeeb 2 жыл бұрын
Really like the hackle attaching technique but I find it simpler to rotate the hackle feather 180 degrees and hold from behind the vice, that way you are not folding the hackle back over on itself and you are still on top of the hook shank.

There is one major drawback to 5 minute epoxy and that is that it will turn yellow and get cloudy as it ages. The slow setting epoxy does not have these aging problems. If you do get bubbles they can be drawn out with a quick touch of a flame of a BIC lighter or a match.

I really like how you use the mono thread to your advantage to lash down the eyes. I have a whole drawer full of these flat adhesive eyes. The glue loses some of it’s adhesive properties over the years, and lashing them down never came to mind. I’m going to make some of these flies for catching Minnesota crappies. Also have lots of pheasant. Keep it up, glad to see working an under utilized natural material like pheasant.

Thanks, Gunnar. This is a well thought out pattern that I'm sure will work in our smallie waters in NC and TN. Is the maribou from the pheasant skin, like on the back and top (bottom) of the skin?

Amazing video and really appreciate your approach. I learn rather then just duplicate a recipe. Quick question if I may. The way you treat the marabou would this be the same in all flies ie a Barely Legal? Thanks again for the tutorials and keep em coming.

Hi Gunnar, you are tying in the tail feathers "curving in" I think the deceiver had them curving out. Any reason for that ? Regards Florian
@phoult37
@phoult37 4 жыл бұрын
The underside of pheasant rump is grayish color and lacks all the markings. My guess is he wants those colors on the outside, not on the inside, so he puts the curve to the inside.
@florianbaumann8294
@florianbaumann8294 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that makes sense, I was coming from the "water push" side of things,
@phoult37
@phoult37 4 жыл бұрын
@@florianbaumann8294 Understandable. I tie my deceiver tails curve out usually myself, but with a small fly like this, I'm guessing the water push factor isn't as important.
