A Variation on Jason Taylors Pheasant Rump Deceiver, applied to a Swing Style (Shank/Stinger Hook) rig for fishing down and across.
The fly features 2 sparse bucktail stabilizer wings which do just that, stabilize the fly and control the orientation of the hook. This allows the hook to be tucked back into the wing and ride hook point up - combined that with the fact that there is no lead eyes or coneheads to get wedged between rocks, this fly can get down and dirty without the hangups.
The wings and hook eye orientation tilt the fly up and allow for a Full Bodied silhouette on the swing, and help to catch current and swim the fly.

You are to blame for getting me back into tying. You break down the process so perfectly, while keeping it interesting, that even a beginner can tie up most if your flies with a little practice.

I’ve been tying for a long time but I learn so much from your videos every time. I love your “fly engineer” approach - as a systems engineer, I’m super into the technical reasons for why you do one thing vs the next. Very educational and beautiful flies. Just got really into swinging on a skagit rig myself - this was my first trailer hook fly! Been tying the more classic buck tails previously.

I got an echo sr 10’10” 6wt. Been swinging for trout in the Tuckasegee and smallmouth in the little Tennessee. I can’t wait to take it home to my striper tailwaters this spring

Nice pattern Gunnar!! I picked up a Redington 11 foot, 6 wt switch rod to swing bass-colored intruder style files for smallmouth in the local rivers last spring. Like you I have been having a hoot with it and also tagged a bunch of walleyes and pike. Yeah, a 60 foot roll-cast is great when there are trees right behind. Been having good luck with crawfish patterns on the switch rod as well.

Very good descriptions of the thoughts behind the design details. Do you tie ant tube flies?

Dude! That is one juicy looking fly!!! A friend of mine that hunts gave me a whole bag of pheasant feathers and I’ve never really had the energy to sort through them to tie anything...but definately going to give this a bash! I’d ever strip retrieve it for perch! Do you think it would work to tie in dumbell eyes for a bit of a jigging action?
