These are so helpful. I’ve been teaching myself to tie flies over the last month via KZbin. The wire trick really helped me.

Be sure your hands/ fingers are not rough/ chapped because that frays the thread. Sand paper your whip finish hand/ fingers and use good hand cream prior to whipping it.😳

When I was 16, I didn’t even know anything about whip finish tools. All my ties were finished off with a hand whip finish. I tied a bunch of 20 and 22 dry flys like that, and without glasses.

Curious as to why you use lead wire instead of lead free wire. Thanks for the series and the tips.

Thanks Cheech. Palmering a feather hackle down a fly, why sometimes do do some people strip off one side of feather, for length rather than just start
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood 8 ай бұрын
That’s to catch the fish that are only on instagram. To be honest the stripped hackle looks really neat but the hackle floats much better if you wrap it traditional style. The barbs trap more air and displace more water. There are times when you would strip half off but it’s mostly just for those insta thirst fish.

Just out of curiosity, why are you not using lead free wire?

I’ll use lead free if I don’t need much weight. For these, I wanted maximum weight.

First, thank you again for all of your incredible content, which not only provides new fly ideas but has been instrumental in improving my tying. I have a question only peripherally related to this video. I can't help but notice the ubiquitous presence of the C&F vise in recent videos. Do you have any initial feelings about it you want to share? And truly unrelated at this point, but do any of you have any time using the Petitjean Swiss Vise, and if so, what do you think about it?
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood 8 ай бұрын
I haven’t used the Swiss vise but it seems that he’s been anti USA in his distribution the last 10 or so years. The Reference is a great vise! I wish it had a cam lever instead of a knob and a bigger crank handle on the back but that’s it! The Master is still top dog in the vise world and still remains my go-to vise. You won’t go wrong with either.
@Stratollac
@Stratollac 8 ай бұрын
@@FlyFishFood Thanks for the quick reply. The screw instead of the cam lever and the access to the rotary functions are my two big concerns with the C&F, so your reservations are enough to put me off for now. I'm leaning toward the Master, and I have been for awhile, but I confess that the (absolutely irrelevant, I'm sure…) eye candy of the precision machining on the Petitjean makes it incredibly tempting, but it’s unavailability in the US is a strong negative. The main thing is that this is meant to be the last vise I buy (famous last words…) and I don't want to be tempted to “step up” again. My Dyna-King Trekker remains a reliable performer with a death-like grip, but the Master has additional features and qualities that I'll use and enjoy.

Any tips on a weed guard?
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood 8 ай бұрын
I avoid them a lot unless it’s critical. Most of the time they are fish-guards. If I need to get super weedless I grab a bait caster.

Tie hares ears and use it for the tail and wing case. Also great for large Stillwater soft hackles.

Cheech I like the series.. Your fast as F in general, may slow it down a bit for beginners watching just saying.. And maybe get closer on some things like the wire breaking.. I’m just thinking new tiers would be thinking possibly it’s like your busting it out to catch the hatch!!!
