NOTE: I totally blew the history on this one. Ted Trueblood was the writer/editor for Field and Stream from 1941-1982. Skip Morris is a current and active tier. Sorry about this. I was researching two flies at the same time and got the creators mixed up. Skip Morris is the creator of the "Skip's Nymph," and several other great flies.

Thanks Dan! That's always good to hear from viewers. And yes, this thing does remind me a little of the profile of the Montana Nymph. Just a little smaller and not so fuzzy with chenille. :-)

Matt, Singeing the tip of that rib is an excellent tip. The old angle cut I was taught in the 70s was far less reliable. Of course this newer stuff seems smaller, more pliable and has a broader range of colors and transparency than the opaque junk of those days. Another great video! ...well outside of the Skip Morris obit. At least you caught it.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, thanks Jim. I hope he never sees this video! I did make a correction in the description but lots of people watch videos without looking at the description. Oops... lesson learned to be more careful in my research. :-)

You're an excellent teacher Matt, good techniques throughout the tying. I know that's a variant, an excellent one too, but I seem to remember it to have legs. I have one of Skip's books, but I don't remember which one, lol. Yes he's got a lot of cool patterns. I raised an eyebrow on the Morris as an editor of F&S, glad you corrected it. Ted Trueblood was an outdoor hero of mine. As were Fred Bear, Gene Hill ( Mostly Tailfeathers), Joe Brooks (Trout Fishing), Fran Betters, and Lefty Kreh - and I kick myself for missing the Iroquois Chapter TU Tie One On 2017 where Kreh was a guest along with Bob Clouser and Pat Cohen. Kreh. passed away shortly after that event. If you're inclined to see it go to Bait Shop Brothers on You Tube. They filmed it and interviewed the guests. Thanks Matt, you have an amazing channel, and are doing a great job.

Thanks Joe! And yeah, I'm embarrassed that I screwed that up and got Skip and Ted Trueblood mixed up. Uggh! I need to go back to just researching one fly at a time. So Fred Bear? Is this the same Fred Bear of Bear Archery? My first bow was in the early 1980s-- I forget the model but it was one of the first compound bows with the mat camo finish. I had it set to about 52-lb draw which I thought I was a stud as a 13-year-old kid. And wow, bummer that you missed a TU event with both Lefty Kreh and Bob Clouser. I'll be that was amazing. I'm going to look up the video tonight. Thanks for the great comment!

@@SavageFlies Yeah the same guy. I've a Bear Whitetail that I blew my shoulder out trying to be a 30 - something stud. I just wrote a story of my archery experience and it disappeared unfinished! @FlyTyer19483 жыл бұрын
Really nice looking fly. I also like doing the singeing instead of cutting the starting point on the rib. I just bought some d-rib & look forward to trying it. A long time ago, I used to tie this with heavy mono or some vinyl, oval tubing I got in Woolworth. The tubing had to be heated in almost boiling water & then stretched enough to thin it down while holding both ends with pliers. The fly is very effective.

Thanks Bob... that sounds like a lot of work to make a rubber bodied fly. I think we're pretty fortunate with all the materials we have available nowadays. :-)

Another nice fly Matt. Yep that D-rib is awesome. Good thing I've got some mad money hidden from my wife so I can go get some. Somehow she doesn't think that fly tying stuff is more important than groceries. Keep the good stuff coming.

What happened with the Regal Revolution vice challenge?? Haven't heard anything about it.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Still doing it- in fact have been trying to finish working up the details today. I'm leaning to doing it mostly as a fly swap, with the entry being the submission of six flies. The winner of the vise would be random, but still have prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. But that's about $750 in prizes and I'm not sure if I can afford that yet. I'm trying though! Stay tuned... I hope to announce it soon.

Kerry- feel free to jump in any time! I love it when other tiers help answer questions here. And Joe- yes I probably got mine from Stockard, but I'm sure lots of places have it. One note, pay attention to the sizes. From small to large, it's called Midge, Nymph then Medium. I found Nymph works best for most sizes I tie. (www.jsflyfishing.com/utc-vinyl-rib-nymph-size)
