I began tying without a vise or bobbin holder in August of 1957. I remember well, the day, because. It was my birthday. We had no wire or these segmented tools. It was very trying to do much. Even my booklet carried a couple of flies I could copy. The Halfback and a Full Back. Associating it with the massive pile of Peacock that came with the kit! Now pop ahead. 54 years, we see a huge selection of coloured. Wire to tie with. My dad was an electrician, so when it hit my tiny mind, I asked him where I could find myself some finer wire. As he. Used installing phone line" It was thin and you took it out of the sleeve, stripped the different coloured plastic and put together horrible flies, but they started to work! Awesome video Brian! I have somewhat of an obsession with using wire for tying, so this video was right up my alley. I definitely agree that the UTC brassie size doesn't make any sense at all 🤔. Love the body on that wet fly! Ironically, I use a similar technique to tie brassie's, but with an ostrich herl thorax instead of the traditional peacock herl. Basically you just tie in one piece of wire at the thorax area of the hook and wrap the wire backwards down the shank, then when you get to your stopping point you just wrap the wire back up the shank in open spirals and tie it off at the thorax. You can get a lot slimmer body profiles when the wire is just wrapped against the bare shank rather than tied in on the shank and wrapped back up. I also tie all of my wire worms on Mustad 37160's with that same wire wrap technique. Lately I have been experimenting with the new Sybai flat wire. It's pretty cool stuff, and I'd definitely be interested to see what you could come up with using it.

Excellent videos and great step-by-step instructions. You just gave me so many ideas on the numerous types fly patterns that I could tie with this technique. These would be great flies for Euro Nymphing since they can represent the segmented bodies of all the little creatures living under the rocks and in the gravel of a stream. Thanks Brian

I never thought of weaving wire, thanks. On the 3 wire technique, it doesn’t matter what order the colors are tied in. After the first wrap it will be correct.

Great video Brian. Glad to see another fellow tyer who enjoys doing multi wire bodies and woven wire bodies. I really liked the look and texture of the wet fly with the counter woven wire over the body. I'll have to use that for sure. If you want to learn another awesome woven wire technique you should check out the houdini weave. There are a couple videos on KZbin showing how to do it. I use it on pheasant tails and stonefly nymphs often for different looks. I think you'll find it interesting. Merry Christmas and I look forward to your next video.

Great stuff here Brian! I've been wanting to do this topic but now I don't need to. :-) I think brassie is a size, dating back to when tiers started stripping wire from telephone lines, and that's what it was already called. So when UTC marketed it, "brassie" was already in the vernacular. And I'd guess the next two sizes they made were a little bigger and a little smaller, so they called those small and large. And when they went back and added a size in between brassie and large, they called it medium. Yes, still kind of confusing. And don't forget, they did come out with an extra-small a few years back. 🙂
