Thanks for showing paragliding is challenging and require propre training to fully understand and handle your wing. Also bravo for showing your feelings and emotions (fear, cries, stress, ...). It's a more human and true story than a lot of clips or incredible performance videos we see on internet, and also humbling because it takes time and pratice to achieve such maneuvers even for experienced pilots. Great video with the voiceover and the good mood. Having a tandem with pal takats must be quite the experience!

Chrigel told me once, that he got a very centered line over. After trying to stall it out it ended ups perfectly in the center. He has altitude so he started fucking around. At some point he realized it was stable enough so he landed like that. But hey he is Chrigel :D.
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing that story with Chrigel! 👍 I've seen something quite similar happen, more than once! 🤓 If I recall correctly, the first time was in the late nineties. 🤔 The pilot was one of my old paragliding students from the early 90s, Russell Ogden - now an Ozone test pilot, ex- World, PWC and British Paragliding Champion etc. 🪂🏅 Russ was practicing full stalls on a FreeX Spark during SIV course in Oludeniz, Turkey with Jocky Sanderson. 🪂 He got it badly wrong - much worse than Nancy does in this video - nearly landing in the lines/wing. 😱 This resulted in line over very close the centre of the wing. 😲 From a distance it looked like two mini wings joined together, like a bowtie. 👔😳 Like Chrigel, Russ decided the "bowtie" was stable enough to land on the beach with, to avoid getting wet. 💦 From quite far out over the sea he only just made it back the beach, landing downwind just a couple of metres from the water! 😅
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
Nancy knows the "Russ bowtie" story well. 🤓 This is partly why she was rightly apprehensive about doing more advanced stall to tail slide practice. This is also why she mistakenly thought the wing had a bowtie-style cravat, an easy mistake to make in the heat of the moment. 😯 Even Pal wasn't sure what was happening at the time! 😕 Great recovery by Nancy in the end after the line broke, removing the knot, with an excellent stall exit! 👏😁

I was interested in watching Nancy's Cravat where a line was over the centre of the wing. It would've been interesting to know how to have attempted to correct this had Nancy's line not have snapped? Would a full stall have been the only option, or cutting the line with a hook knife?
@mariopolzgutter124611 ай бұрын
This video, although funny, shows how complex paragliding is. If you watch this video carefully, and we all know that Nancy and Carlo are paragliders who fly very often, fly in different flight areas, fly all year round, etc. that even the two of them get into trouble here and there. For everyday flyers, this is once again proof that you should definitely not dream of C or D gliders unless you fly 200 hours a year if you want to survive. So as nice as it is when you watch the X Alps, for example, this level is unattainable for the normal pilot, it's all an illusion.
@abseil7611 ай бұрын
Not all pilot progresses all the way. Many are happy beyond measure to just glide around in the safest environment. But whoever feels the need to go further, it's all there for the grab and it's learnable.
@7up-weee11 ай бұрын
Using hours as a proxy for which type of wing to fly is not great. It doesn't tell you much about how you will react or what skills you have. Any wing can bite you. High Bs are especially troublesome as they lul pilots into a sense of security that just isn't there in the wild (it's just a B so it's safe right? Nope). 200 hours per year is still not enough without any further training (i.e. beyond basic pilotage). There's no way I could get 200 hours per year living in Scotland but my wing choice is right for me in the places I fly. You just have to be analytical about it.

David Eyraud recommends to hold the risers at backfly position if/when needed to prevent twists and hands moving around from being unbalanced. Might have helped in a few cases here.
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
Agreed, that's a great general tip - thanks for mentioning that! 👍 Not surprising that it's a great tip, coming from David Eyraud - as well as a great pilot and SIV instructor, IIRC he's also one of founding members of the original Safety Acro Team, aka SAT team, together with Raul, Felix, etc! 🤩

@@flybubblecarlo this advice is surprisingly controversial actually
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
@@PhilippeLarcher I'm not surprised to hear it; there are still very many things in free flight that are surprisingly controversial, and I guess likely always will be! 🤓 I think partly this is because there is often more than one 'right' answer or potential solution, depending on the pilot and other many factors. What works perfectly for some doesn't necessarily work well -or even at all - for others! 🤓

Why did your lifejacket not inflate when you fell in the water under the reserve? (At around the 24 minute mark, when getting out of the rescue boat, the uninflated lifejacket is visible) Was it only a manual, not an automatic one? (But then where is the lanyard for manually inflating it, shouldn't it be much more visible so that it is easy to trigger the inflation?)
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
Well noted. Since the reserve deployment was planned, and there were three fast speedboats waiting for me, to save unnecessarily wasting the gas cannister I deactivated the auto inflation on water contact on the life jacket. If I had needed to I could have activated it manually. Since it was quite breezy I got dragged a little through the water and so did consider it but decided I did not need it. As you can see in the video, the speedboat arrived very quickly (actually two speedboats).
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
I also removed the foam back protector from the harness, mostly to stop the protector from getting wet but also to reduce the tendency to float face down.
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
I could have easily landed the Beamer 3 on the landing field however since it was quite breezy this would not have been a good idea as I may have gotten dragged.

From our testing of many wings we (still) feel that the Beat (and Beat Light) are exceptionally well behaved mid B wings, offering an exceptional combination of qualities and (still) excellent performance for the class. That's why Nancy and I chose them for this special SIV and Acro course! 😁🪂👌 Our review of the Beat and Beat Light was published after this course: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHOWapd6Ys11aMk
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
Of course there are other great wings we could have taken, but we chose the Beat and Beat Light because we felt they were the very best choice for us, to make the most out of the course. In retrospect we still feel we made the right choice! ✅☑✔
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
ps. What you can't tell so well from this film - because you have to edit things down (from many hours of footage!) to make a watchable film - is that actually we're not just doing normal basic SIV manoeuvres. Each of us was pushing our limits with the aim of improving our glider control skills and making us better - safer and more confident - pilots. I was also especially keen to move more into the acro side of things which, as a nice bonus, the Beat turned out to be an exceptionally great wing for too! 🪂👌👍

It is enough for ENA beginner skills from approx. 10(+/-5) h/a in approx. 20-30 flights. Low B from approx. 30 h/a in approx. 50-80 flights, High B from approx. 50 h/a in approx. 50-100 flights, EN-C from approx. 70 h/a and EN-D from approx. 90 h/a in approx. 100-150 high altitude flights. CCC requires from around 120 hours per year. It is important to be able to react quickly, not to become paralyzed when problems arise and to regularly train the most important descent maneuvers (ears back, B-stall, spiral dive) and SIV maneuvers (wingover, from EN-B: full stall with flyback, from EN- C: Heli and SAT). If you are around 20-40 years old you often need a little less training. The training-times apply to a slightly above-average talented pilot aged around 50-70 years!(me 😁) After a total of 150 hours of airtime at 70 years old, I moved up from EN-B (1a/110h, Ozone Rush 5) to EN-C (1.5a/130h, UP Trango xc3). Since 2.5a/250h I have been flying the Low EN-D UP Meru with a very large increase in safety (around +100%, never claps or collapses!!) compared to the Trango and I will only switch down to a lower classified glider that is specifically unsafe due to lack of money or due to age-related insufficient fitness. Many kind regards, Joerg Hausbrand from Heidenau near Dresden.

Nice video! But what you call a full stall actually isn't, it is a stall to backfly. Full stall is when you stall your wing completely(having your hands under your butt) fall for a while, then go to backfly.
@flybubblecarlo11 ай бұрын
Glad you liked the video! You're of course right; some things like this have been simplified for the film. Although we did also do some more basic full stalls we were actually mostly practicing stall to back fly / tail slide and getting generally better control of this. What you see in this video is only a small snippet of what we did. We spent a few days mostly doing a variety of stalls, 3-5 flights per day. It was really fun! 😃

It comes from Hungarian "takács" ("weaver"), which is derived from Slavic *tъkačь. Spelling variants include Takacs, Takach, Takats, and Takac." The surname fits: Pal definitely knows how to weave a paraglider into all kinds of shapes! 🪂🙃🤪 He should also be on the list of notable people with the surname, I reckon! 👍
