First of all thank you for such a beautiful fly. I have being looking for a not too difficult minnow pattern. and this is it. I love tying with Marabou. It has given me a great tutorial in apply eyes and building the beautiful head. I am hook. Juan (Crappie Man)from Dallas.

Nice fly. I sometimes put a small amount of buck tail underneath to give the marabou some base. Marabou shrinks so much in the water and sometimes I need a little fatter body. All the best, and thanks for sharing. Sean

Sean Mooney Thanks Sean, I sometimes do the same, it all depends on the minnow I trying to imitate. On some of the lakes I fish the minnows can be both skinny and sparse. Cheers, Phil

The fly is called a Mitchell Creek, you will find the pattern in Stewart and Allen , flies for trout.1972 copy.

Hi William, thanks for letting me know. With all of the different patterns and recipe books out there I wasn't aware of the Mitchell Creek. I have always liked the Thunder Creek Special and swapping bucktail for softer mobile marabou just made sense to match the minnows in our lakes. Cheers, Phill

Great looking fly;Very well explained[tying steps]. However I noticed that the eye of the fly was completely filled with U.V. resin;This will be very difficult [if not impossible to remove].Do you have a method to keep resin out of the eye? Thanks Earl
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing9 жыл бұрын
Earl Cantwell Hi Eric, the best way is try to be careful with your application. If some gets in there use a small hackle stem or thread and pull it through the eye to transfer the resin from the eye. If you do activate the resin and clog the eye you can sometimes bore a hole using your dubbing needle. Cheers, Phil

pull a waste feather stem through it before curing to clean out the resin

Hey Phil, I have a bunch of flies just like this with blocked eyes with UV resin. I have not found a way to open them without wrecking the head. Do you have any tricks for that. I know when I use a needle to clear the eye, it cracks the finish on the front of the head. I hope you have a better answer. All the best, Sean
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing9 жыл бұрын
+Sean Mooney Hi Sean not really. In this video this was a complete accident as I often have to lean back or out of the way so I don't block the camera. When I do this I don't always see what is happening until it is too late. Prevention is always the best approach. If you think you might have filled the eye take an unwanted hackle and pull it through the hook eye to remove any resin before curing it. I hope this helps, thanks for taking the time to contact me. Cheers, Phil

Eye looks disproportionately large.How do you size?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing6 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles, I actually like to use slightly larger eyes if I can, simply so they really stand out. When you coat the eyes with UV resin I think it also magnifies their overall effect. The size and style of the head I am attaching the eyes to also have a bearing. I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks, Phil

Thanks, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my video. This pattern would work very well in moving water. The original Thunder Creek Minnow this pattern is a variation of was originally designed for rivers and streams. Cheers, Phil
