Re: the lighthouse. It should have opened in March 22, but the contractors don’t seem to understand. When working with anything do do with the sea, you are governed by the tides. These people work Monday to Friday 08:00-17:00 and I’m afraid the tides have different ideas!

The fairground area is a shadow of what it use to be, remember the water chute ?. I have been trying to find info from the 1960's when the caravan park was extended and the sand dunes flattened to the East . Great memories of the 1960's

I grew up in Porthcawl in the 50s and 60s, worked in the fair at 13. What would you like to know. The museum in John St has more info than me.

Great Video, I'll be home next week on 3 weeks from Middle East and cannot wait to be back having my early morning walks there with my dog. Maybe I'll see you outside the Piccolo Bar, although I tend to find the seats outside the Marine Bar far too inviting.... It's my dog... he pulls me in there I swear

I'm an Industrial Achaeologist born in Porthcawl 1952. Porthcawl was created in the early 1800s by John Brogden. The 'pier' was the breakwater to protect the outer harbour (marina) Salt Lake was the Dock (closed 1900) The floor of the dock was a river, It was filled in after WW11 .Two concrete pipes held the river which you can see flowing into the marina today. Then it was filled with colliery waste from the Llynfi Valley, if those pipes have been compromised by the drilling and building on salt lake the colliery waste will be turned into sludge ~ That's exactly what happened in ABERVAN killing over 100 children. I have flown over Porthcawl rececently the fair has no big rides, the caravans have gone, most of the hotels have been re-purposed and plans are building appartments around the coastline. What do you think about that my friend 🙂 PS. It's a little different from Abervan becase the pipes will collapse and cause massive flooding ~ It cant be stopped because the lock gates have been blocked.

Hi, I did make a video about the history of the harbour a few years ago. Plans going forward are fine with me. It has been a waste ground for over 60 years.

It's not that old, the go-kart track used to be there. Before that, the old wooden Figure Eight coaster
