Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle*
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- *Pokeballs are allowed in battle when I need to catch an HM user
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- I allow myself to manipulate my starter (IVs, nature, HP type)
-- Using the bike for movement speed increases is banned (it can be used to obtain items)
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- HM Mules cannot use Pickup (I want to ensure that the comparison between Pokemon is as accurate as possible, this RNG would skew things.)
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining

The reason Sealeo took so little damage from flamethrower is because Sealeo and Walrein have the thick fat ability, halving damage from fire and ice type moves. Use this knowledge in the future and carry yourself to victory!

The reason wailord went for water spout: the ai looks at which moves will ko randomly and if it calculates a roll that will ko, it stops, even if there is another move with a better chance. Both blizzard and water spout probably had a chance to ko so it could have picked either from a coin flip.

Pretty sure that Blizzard from Wailord wasn't a ko (or the Ai had a low roll while simulating the damage), Flygon tanked the ice beam from Milotic easily. Blizzard is stronger but Milotic has better SpA, also there is no chance that Water Spout ever can KO, it's just neutral effective.
@nintai6656

Also possible the game calculated that blizzard would miss if used that turn.
@rikaniebangbang
@rikaniebangbang Жыл бұрын
@@nintai6656 Exactly. I think I remember a speedrunner explain once that if the game rolls a miss in its simulation of the turn it won't go for that move that turn. Even if it might have hit and done more damage. So basically you have a 30% chance there that Wailord just won't even try to hit a Blizzard. I do hope I'm not misremembering things but it makes sense, no?

I looked up speedrun docs and did a damage calc (the docs don't mention the nature so I gave it SpA+ Nature) I used his stats from the video and the Blizzard max roll is 87,7%, Water Spout with full Hp is only 40,7%

"Does levitate work when Flygon uses Dig?" That's just brought back a very happy memory for me, back when I was 11 years old and using my Flygon in a battle vs a friend when we were on an overnight trip with school. My Flygon used dig against his Camerupt (I'd used the earthquake TM on my Aggron, as it took me a while to figure out how to get Flygon😅 ), and he decided to retaliate with Earthquake predicting my dig. The absolute smug grin I gave him when it failed due to levitate was priceless! Edit after watching more of the video: I'd had Saphire for nearly a year when I found out how to get Flygon. I found out from getting a Flygon and Vibrava pokemon card 😂 I totally get how you didn't know about that, and I'm glad I wasn't the only one! Hence why my Aggron had my Earthquake TM.

Hi Scott, just a thought on natures, why dont you, from now on, use a neutral nature for every "first run" and then analyse in that first run which were your strengths and weaknesses throughout the playtrough, say for instance you had a particularly easy time on the physical defensive side, but struggled on special damage ranges throughout the first run, then thatd be a good opportunity to take mild nature? since youre still learning this generation its still early so you wont have lost out much in terms of data, just a thought! Edit:- After watching the run i think Flygons best natures are either Mild or Quiet, but we dont like to mess with speed too much!

Everyone explained all the other quirks in this play through to you well which is dope glad to see such an uplifting community! But man you and I and everyone else apparently has so much nostalgia and a special section of the heart for this gen, especially our first encounter with this beast.. I want to ramble more about my fond memories of rolling the dive on trapinch to lvl 45 but let me drop the last seed of knowledge! The AI calculates its moves with coin flips based on its own potential “pre roll” of damage it simulates. This gives the Wailord sometimes running Water spout when it rolled more damage/same damage/ko with either one (somehow) and picked a 50/50 between it and blizzard in it’s pre calcs. I thought I had the answer to Gyarados but I actually don’t lmao no😭

Two big misplays at Brawly in the first playthrough: 1.) Move Selections As there is no way for Brawly to lower your accuracy until the Makuhita, you should have been using Bite for the flinch chance, and tried for Sand Tomb once or twice to get residual damage to (hopefully) avoid the heal. 2.) Deleting the Wrong Move for Steel Wing Once again, you slept on Bite; currently Flygon's best move.

My understanding of Emerald AI is that it CAN see if your Pokemon is a Flying type, but it CANNOT see your Ability unless it manually checks. So if you are using a Pokemon with Levitate, it can lead to situations where the AI will try to use a ground move. After using Earthquake and failing one time Gyarados would not use it again in this context. HOWEVER, it has another interesting quirk where if you switch out a Pokemon, the AI "forgets" what Ability you have. It's not useful for a solo playthrough challenge like this, but still fun to know. If you switched Flygon out, and brought it back out, Gyarados might try to use Earthquake again. Since his Attack stat was massively boosted from Dragon Dance, it's possible he saw a 'OHKO' against Flygon and choose Earthquake for 100 Accuracy instead of using the less accurate Hyper Beam.

I've been campaigning for not skipping trainers on these runs, but between the growth curve and the fact that level up moves are bad so you have little to look forward to, Flygon's among the very few that wouldn't mind a little skipping. The ice spam at the end of the league is the only thing keeping that in check.

Ah Flygon. My favorite Pokemon I liked so much back in Hoenn when I was young. Even with Garchomp around, it still won my interest, even going back to using it in recent times. Looking at its Gen 3 level up moveset and comparing it to modern Gens, it is such a stark difference. Dragon Dance, Earthquake by level up, Superpower. Those are so much better than what it had back in Gen 3. To say nothing with the diverse TM and Move Tutor options that are much more accessible. As for the run itself, I was fearing that it would be very difficult, since I thought every Dragon type belongs in the Slow EXP Group on top of its mediocre level up learnset. Thankfully, Flygon is one of the lucky few Dragons who isn't in the dreaded Slow EXP Group. If it wasn't for the different EXP group, Flygon would have to spend a long time getting the levels necessary to handle Glacia and especially Wallace. There are like a few selected Dragons that don't belong in there: Altaria, Kingdra, Tyrantrum, Dragalge, Noivern, Turtonator, Drampa, Flapple/Appletun, Duraludon. They all have different EXP groups. Every other Dragon type I didn't mention belongs to the Slow group. Pseudos and especially the Legendaries.

Flygon is the cool dragon for me .And like you ,I didn't know how to get it when I did my first emerald playthrough, until I've watched my classmate's playthrough. And ever since then I usually use one in my playthroughs of gen 3. Flygon is really good as a physical attacker, and it really needs gen 4's physical/special spilt in emerald, that's probably why Wallace and Glecia were so tough (other then it's 4 times weakness to ice moves ), but you can make them easy by changing the hidden power type to grass or electric or use the combination of solarbeam and sunny day and mass up with their AI a bit, because they usually prefer to set up or to use a non damaging moves for about 40% of the time . Sometimes they attack based on which move would do the best damage to your Pokémon. The AI is kind of different for each class of trainers from what I know. I think that the reason why Wallace uses water spout sometimes , its probably due its AI's nature to calculate which move would do the best damage for 30%, and because water spout does the most damage once the Pokémon's hp is at max hp , and probably with stab the AI sometimes preferred to use that move? 😅🤔 I'm not sure ... But I hope that could explain the AI's randomness .🙃

I have a very similar nostalgic memory about Flygon. When I saw the new games were coming out, I ordered a sort of pokedex book from my school book club. It had little pictures from the anime and such and also showed all the pokemon in the new region, said what moves they learned by level up and who evolved into who. Except for Flygon. It had Trapinch, Flygon and Vibrava on the one page, but it claimed that Trapinch was a single stage pokemon and that Vibrava evolved into Flygon seperately from Trapinch. So I trusted the book and just couldn't get this awesome dragon.

I really love Flygon the fact that it has Levitate as ability is very good especially avoiding Earthquake when digging. Just as a tip if you were ever curious about your remaining HP value in a double battle you can press Start+Select in a double battle from Gen III onward to toggle between the HP Bar and the HP values. It would also be interesting to see what AI level Wallace has in the game's code. I believe Wallace has a high enough AI level to know move type and accuracy which is why he probably randomly chooses Water Spout and Blizzard on the Wailord but evidently he does not have a high enough AI level to see Levitate. His AI level may be leftover from when he was a gym leader in Ruby/Sapphire and not of a level expected of the E4/champion.

I've noticed you tend to overvalue the "better" stat when prioritizing move choice. For example, on Juan's Kingdra, you kept using Earthquake even though Dragonbreath and Earthquake are both possible OHKOs/guaranteed 2HKOs (I can't remember if gym leader teams get IVs in Gen 3, I know they don't get EVs) and Dragonbreath has a chance of paralysis. Unless it's a Pokémon like Chansey where it has 5 base attack, most Pokémon can use Physical or Special moves effectively and you're likely to get similar damage rolls when your weaker stat move is super effective. You also have to take into consideration the enemy's Def vs SpDef if you can see that stat. For example, if your lv 55 Flygon from Juan's fight with 160 ATK/132 SPATK fought a lv 50 Groudon. You'd get the exact same damage roll with a miracle seed boosted Giga Drain that you would with a soft sand boosted Earthquake (43.4% - 51.4%). Despite the lower power of Giga Drain and your higher attack stat. That's because Groudon is weak to grass and has 90 SpDef and 140 Def Edit: just got to the Wallace fight and ran some calcs. Since Flamethrower is worthless in this fight, Giga Drain would actually be a really good replacement. Earthquake, Dragon Claw, and Giga Drain are all Guaranteed 2HKO on Wailord; EQ the Tentacruel, EQ for the Milotic, Dragon Claw for the Gyarados and Ludicolo, then you'd have Giga Drain to OHKO the Whiscash. It doesn't change much of the fight but gives you an option to get some decent healing back on the Wailord (33.3-39.3% of your max hp recovered, which will give you most of your hp back if you get hit by blizzard. You could even theoretically Earthquake, then Giga Drain when Wallace heals, then Giga Drain again to finish it off, giving you almost all your hp back)

Hidden power rock would probably be great for Flygon. It would make use of your better attacking stat, give you an answer to Glacia, and still give you an answer for Winona (except Skarmory).

I don't think HP Rock will be worthwhile for Flygon, since STAB EQ is still stronger than Super Effective Hidden Power of choice.

I remember playing Sapphire back then and making Trapinch evolve to Vibrava. I thought it was the final stage, it never crossed my mind to check my Pokedex and see if there's a missing slot after Vibrava's entry. Imagine my astonishment, followed by excitement, instantly followed by regret for boxing Vibrava when I saw Drake's Flygon in the Pokemon League.

Great run! I really love your Emerald runs, and Flygon is one of my favorite mons. If I can give 1 or 2 small optimizations (not that it matters) you could have set up Substitute against one of the Sealeos when it uses Hail, be high enough level to 1 hit everything but the Walrein, and gotten the chance to do 2 EQs instead of 1. Wouldn't have saved a ton of rare candies, but maybe a few. Drake probably would have been about the same, and bringing in a Chesto Berry to Wallace would have let you get 1 heal, which also would have removed the Toxic the pecha berry was there for anyways.

Substitute during hail is a good idea! Noted for the future.

"I didn't know how to get the cool dragon I wanted because its pre-evolution was unintuitive and we couldn't just look everything up online easily back then" My struggles as a Gen 1 fan of Dragonite. I had no idea at all it was related to Dratini, and it's the dragon I always wanted. Flygon is another favorite dragon Pokemon of mine. Adorable but still somewhat imposing, absolutely looks tough.

interesting fact: actually, the gyarados using earthquake is checking to see if you have levitate, as it is naturally impossible to check your ability unless it is used at some point or is announced at the beginning. less so of a calculated manoeuvre and more 'I'll go for this and see if it works and if it doesn't I won't go for it again'

Hi Scott In this game the Amulet Coin is available (from Mom) after beating Norman. That held item doubles money gained from winning battles. This could be very helpful in games where you are trying to access the game corner tms. Especially in runs where you want multiple game corner tms.

I think the game runs through its normal damage calculation when figuring out which move will do more damage, crits and ranges and all. So that wailord calculated that a water spout crit would do more damage than a blizzard low roll, and picked spout.

Flygon did surprised me! Especially about how easy it took the champion down! It clocked in the end with a good time and a good level, even though its number of resets have been fairly high. But Scott, if I were to point out a Pokemon for winning it all I would say Heracross, although it's from generation 2. But you know what? Kyogre from gen 3 would have the best results and that would be my bet!

For Wallace, if I recall correctly, if there's a chance to KO with multiple moves, it picks between them at random. Full HP Water Spout vs Blizzard. The Gyarados uses Earthquake on you because it doesn't know you have Levitate until it sees you dodge a ground move with it. Once it sees you do this, I think it's aware you have Levitate, but then forgets when you switch out. I could be wrong, but I think it was something like that. It probably has something to do with trying to avoid enemy AI automatically knowing when you have Levitate on a Pokemon who can have other abilities, and they just never really accounted for Pokemon that can only have Levitate.

I live flygon. It's my favourite dragon pokemon. It's versatile, EQ stab, not over powered stats yet very respectable stats and great coverage! It's the OG ground dragon mon and great as a mixed fighter. Fun fast, Flygon has the same attack stat as Trapinch, its first evolution stage!

the emerald speedrun file I found suggests that you rare candy up after Sidney (or the first E4) - admittedly the speedrun is designed for Swampert, but probably also works for other pokemons, also, because stats matter (see the Chimecho video), Drake has the highest speed of the E4 with 132 and Salamence (Flygon is 2nd with 126)

I didn't know this until I watched PokemonChallenges' Emerald Kaizo series, but there's a reason that Wallace's Gyarados would use Earthquake against Flygon, even though your Flygon has Levitate. The enemy trainer AI in Emerald only learns your pokemon's ability the moment it affects something in a battle, e.g. if you send a Lanturn with the ability Volt Absorb into battle against a Manectric, enemy AI will prioritise what it thinks should be move with the highest damage potential (let's say Thunder) and attempt to use it, triggering Volt Absorb and alerting the AI to Lanturn's ability. However, switching out your pokemon will reset the AI's knowledge of that pokemon's ability, which you can take advantage of to get free switch-ins, attack or set-up turns and healing with the right set of abilities.
