Haha, that's funny. But anyway, the reason I chose not to go to those bodies was because in the real world, large bodies are classified as dwarf planets if they're smaller than The Moon. By that logic, I felt that Dres and Plock weren't planets either, even though it isn't explicitly stated they aren't as far as I know, because they're based on Pluto and Ceres, and they're smaller than The Mun. I have been playing with The Minor Planets Expansion recently, which is a mod that adds kerbalized dwarf planets and asteroids into the OPM system. In the future, when I'm better at the game, I wouldn't mind remaking this mission with the plans to fly by every body in the enhanced Kerbolar system I would get with those two mods.

@@tibbittsaerospace201 How about this challenge: fly by these 13 bodies in this order, flying by each body ONLY ONCE. Moho, Eve, Kerbin, Duna, Dres, Jool, Sarnus, Urlum, Neidon, Plock, Havous, Mracksis, Ervo, then return to Kerbin.

@@sapphoenixthefirebird5063 Sounds like quite the challenge, off the top of my head those first 3 would be incredibly difficult sense to get down to moho’s level takes a lot of energy, and to get back out with gravity assists you’re almost forced to use an Eve assist once to get down and another to get back up, not impossible with enough fuel though, another problem would be a inclinations, with the gas giants and large terrestrial planets it’s less of an issue because of their size, sense you can pretty easily change your inclination on the flyby, but for Duna, Moho, and the dwarf planets, it’s logistically impossible to change your inclination using the bodies’ gravity, so again you’re forced to use fuel. It would be a huge headache but very rewarding to pull off, maybe I’ll come back to it one day when I inevitability get back into KSP.

@@tibbittsaerospace201 Another challenge mission I wanna see is a grand tour (starting off with blasting off from Kerbin to Duna) of each planet's moons and the planet itself to Holst's The Planets suite. The order is Mars (Duna), Venus (Eve), Mercury (Moho), Jupiter (Jool), Saturn (Sarnus), Uranus (Urlum), Neptune (Neidon), followed by Pluto (Plock) by Colin Matthews and Earth (Kerbin) by Hiroyuki Kayo.

Wow. Just wow. The thought of those consecutive gravity assists just astonish me. Especially the ones they did with Voyager 1 and 2 back in the 70's I think. Just the fact that the planets had to be aligned like that. And the amount of math and physics that goes into that blows my mind. But really good video. I'm not confident enough to use gravity assits in KSP yet but I think you just convinced me to learn how to do gravity assists.

0:59 throw* before anybody beats me to it 😎 Edit: You also may notice on the of the Eve flybys the solar pannels fold back in even though these solar pannels are not capable of that, the reason being the recording of that particular flyby got corrupted and I had to load the quick save and re-record it, in doing so the craft must have reset and folded up the solar pannels for whatever reason, only noticed afterward, ksp is weird like that lol Its also worth mentioning the mission did now take 500 years to complete that was the probe exiting the solar system. I wanted to do it in a semi reasonable amount of time without needing to wait lifetimes in parking orbits so the longest time the craft was dormant was waiting for the second jupiter assist for about 50 years. I would estimate from launch to final flyby took no more than 75 years.

KingDededeTheGod Thank you! It took me about two weeks, but that was because I kept running into glitches where advanced controls would lock up so I couldn’t create maneuver nodes, even though I should have the connection to be able to do so. I hope you liked the video :) something I’d like to put out there now that you mention it is a majority of the mission time was spent flying past Neidon and out of the system because the speed was a measly 2500 or so m/s, the small scale of the system makes it difficult to reach the astronomical speeds of real life craft that have taken similar trajectories. From the launch to the final flyby I would estimate to be 75 years or so, still a staggering time but nowhere near the 500 it took the craft to completely exit the system.

there for sure is, 500 years is a huge exaggeration because that's how long it took to leave the heliosphere, the only part I could optimize more just based off intuition and not a ton of math is going from Jupiter to Jupiter, that parking orbit lasted about 50 years, as I needed to wait for the outer planets to get in a sort of golden ratio-like position, if I launched initially later on I wouldn't have to wait for that to happen but I wanted to account for the inner portion taking a lot longer so I gave myself wiggle room

@tibbittsaerospace201
@tibbittsaerospace201 4 жыл бұрын
Tou - FPV The transfer window for sarnus in my experience should be roughly 90 degrees, but it isn’t a big deal if that isn’t completely accurate. Sarnus has a very large sphere of influence, so with a bit of tweaking you’re bound to get an encounter, it really helps of you set Sarnus as a target and watch the closest approach nodes. I’ve thought about trying a tutorial series, and I wouldn’t mind doing one if enough people request it, but I’m not confident in my ability to explain things, so I’d rather get a friend who is new to the game to play first and try to explain it to them to see what works and what doesn’t.

I want to do something similar to this mission. Can you explain how to line up gravity assists like this. I already know the basics of gravity assists but I don't know how to plan them.
@tibbittsaerospace201
@tibbittsaerospace201 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, I’ll try my best but it's difficult to explain text so bare with me. From Moho to Jool it didn't really require much planning at all. Because of how close the planets are it was really easy to just either wait an orbit, or make my gravity assist send me higher or lower, in order to make my orbital period faster or slower, to arrive at a planet at the right time. The tricky part was past Jool, obviously it's kind of boring to slowly make my way past the planets, I wanted to fling myself really fast, passing the planets in quick succession. The way I went about that was after the first Jool assist, I saved. I then time warped to see when the planets would line up (basically when all the gas giants were in a mostly straight line, it happened about 50 years after the first Jool assist in my case) and I slightly burned to change how long my orbital period is, and through trial and error I eventually got myself to be in the same sport Jool was when the planets line up. From there it was basically just pulling back a bow and aiming, large bodies like Jool can generate a ton of speed and you can easily reach Kerbol's escape velocity, so all you need to do is slightly alter where you're being sent so you'll cross another planet's path, when you get closer to that planet alter where it's going to fling you to get to the next planet and so on. Hope that makes sense, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Nice, could you maybe use RTGs and science units for more realistic probe? Because Kerbol/Sun's light was too weak to power solar panels at jool and beyond solar system.
@tibbittsaerospace201
@tibbittsaerospace201 2 жыл бұрын
There actually are RTGs on the craft under the dish, but in this case they were redundant as the craft can hold enough power to preform every necessary maneuver on its own beyond jool. The reason I didn't put science units on was because there isn't really a point, the video was to demonstrate how I went about preforming these orbital maneuvers, not to make the craft realistic or recreate a real world probe, so the science parts are obsolete. I'm glad you enjoyed the video but I likely will not be adding science parts to my probes in the future unless the video is taken in career or science mode or I just feel like it.

How did you plan out the assists and overall trajectory?
@tibbittsaerospace201
@tibbittsaerospace201 4 жыл бұрын
Most of it was just trial and error, it's pretty easy to bounce around the inner system in a relatively short amount of time with not much planning at all because of how close the planets are. The outer system was a bit more tricky though. About 50 years after the first Jool assist the gas giants were lined up so that I could just assist off of each of them and accelerate, which let me ignore efficient transfer windows. I used the first Jool assist to position myself so I would be roughly near Jool when the planets were in the right spots, after that I just sort of did small burns and time warped to see where that put me. For example when the time is right I could be at the lowest point in my orbit, and I would miss Jool, so I would do small adjustments and hope that over a longer period of time I would drift into the right spot by making my orbital period longer or shorter. Once I was able to encounter Jool it was pretty easy to get to the rest of the planets because I was traveling so quickly that my orbital paths were almost just straight lines.
