Josh, you put out some awesome films, but this flight was just magic. So good to see Dad back in the cockpit. I think you'll look back on those times as the best of your life! And Chelsey's left break from the formation was like TopGun! You captured it perfectly.

Josh, as of the 18th of Nov., I've been without my dad for 2 years, and the loss of him is still raw to me. But it brings me so much joy to see you have such a special moment and be able to share it with your father. 20 years ago, my dad was my instructor when I began taking flight lessons, although I have yet to finish my flight training, it was so special that I could say my dad was my instructor. Thank you for making a video of this, it warms my heart and reminds me of some very warm memories of my own father. I always enjoy your videos, but this one hits close to home for me. Thank you.

I think the part that touches a lot of people with this video is that it’s not scripted. Most of your videos have a script, and that’s awesome. But then there are those moments of you putting the GoPro on your head just to fly pattern work. And those moments that were on the cutting room floor (kayaking in Alaska). And then these moments that are just “hey, I’m going to go fly with the ones I love.” I appreciate your ability to tell a story, while at the same time I like it that’s there’s more than just the story. Like watching your favorite band practicing in a basement or joining them in a jam session in the hotel lobby. Raw. Real.

I love your videos. Flying formation was a very choreographed maneuver. Whether it was in a fighter sized AC or a large transport AC. Once you learn the basics, it doesn’t matter the aircraft. The plan, the communications and strict adherence to the ROE is required. At some point flying formation was comfortable and efficient. I’m glad you got to show your Dad how to make it happen.

I loved this, Josh. From both the flying and artistic standpoints. Having been fortunate enough to have done some elementary formation flying in planes not unlike yours, I understand the joy and wonder of watching and being part of such aviation. It is magnificent fun when done right, even at elementary levels. So being able to watch it in your video was for sure a treat. Moving between flying and the next topic, I know you and all aviators know the great surprised and fun that can just happen on the fly when simply sitting around an airport on a Sunday afternoon, doing some hangar flying, and some great unexpected opportunity comes up. So... As an artist never ever discount the absolute magic, wonder, and miracles that can occur solely out of serendipity. I've engaged in a couple kinds of artistic activities over the years, and I certainly understand the pleasure and pride that is derived from planning, designing, and executing a great project. Put all the pieces together perfectly, plan to make them perfect, etc, etc. It is so fulfilling. On the other hand, we also must not neglect to accept - whenever the muses decide to gift us - with the sudden, unplanned, but exquisitely joyous "thing" that just pops up out of nothing. Like your waste files of video. Nope, today's video is not a Martin Scorcese production. But it's fabulous, wondrous, freeing, and spontaneous .And it deserves celebrating and to be seen by others who appreciate the same things. So please - NEVER abandon the spontaneous inspiration in favor of only perfectly engineered perfection. You've heard it said that prefect is the enemy of good. I'll add one more - perfect is the enemy of the magical!

Josh, loved the video. It was a raw moment and am glad your shared it ! I love the meticulously edited multi-part series that you produce, and they are planned with content creation in mind. Not every video needs to be that, and is this video is a perfect example of why. Those unplanned moments caught on camera are just as special in their own right, because they are the ones that often reveal what general aviation is really about - in this case a guy creating a memory with his Dad. Please do keep posting shorter videos like this ! Ben (Melbourne, Australia)

This video brought back memories from long ago (early 1980’s), when as kid USAF instructor (~25 years old), I was teaching introductory formation flying in the T-37 to kids not much younger than me. By the end of the training block, the good ones could do 90 degrees of bank and 3 G’s in “fingertip” (~3’ wing tip clearance) formation! When I think back, man we crammed a lot of training into a short period of time. Your video was beautiful, instructive, and for me, reminiscent of times gone by. Thanks for that.

Josh, great video as it was a memory moment with the people you love! You don't need perfect coverage for a video. Flying does not always turn out the way you expect though hopefully you land without damage to plane or self. There is no doubt that Chels has brought an increase in your following as you mix semi-personal with flying and professional videography. While I did not fly what we would call full-scale planes with my dad, I flew model aircraft with him for more than 30 years. The memories we had are fantastic! I have flown formation both full-scale and model and while full-scale has a much bigger danger factor, formation model flying is much harder when you are standing on the ground trying to determine relative distance. Please continue to share your flying experiences / memories. Video editing is very time consuming, especially when you are putting out professional quality video but it is okay to just include some fun memories without worrying if you have enough "good" video. It is not the destination but the journey and shared experiences are a great way to remember our own experiences. Life is too short and you never know when things will change so enjoy it with those you love and we will have fun watching from a distance.

How special to have your Dad alongside you as he obviously enjoys the experience of it all... and also to have your friend alongside Chelsey as well. Wow! Not being a pilot myself, the closest I ever came to flying in a sense of "formation"... was back when I went riding street motorcycles with a friend as a pair on so many of the paved county roads here in Yakima County, Washington state. Kudos for producing quality, educational, and meaningful contents on your channel. This video is highlighting what general aviation is all about: cherish the time spent flying with families and friends and the spectacular scenery seen from the air. This specific video is also an introductory of formation flight for pilots who have never done one, but are thinking of doing it. Appreciate you pointing the educational resource for one to learn more about the intricacy of a formation flight in addition to seeking formation flight experts for ground school and flight training like every endorsement pilot should get in one's logbook; this will ensure the safety, gain the experience and the proficiency of any formation flight operation.
