I didn’t have a total engine failure, but I did have an emergency landing on time.

I just landed at KPVC today around 8:40…flew around cape cod for a bit before heading back to KPYM. Very cold today but still amazing views. Also on another note, we took advantage of the Airplace offering. Being able to try out headsets helped my wife determine what she felt to be most comfortable!
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
I know the views must’ve been spectacular. The area around there, from the air is just amazingly beautiful. So I can only imagine that it must’ve been absolutely amazing. Glad to hear you guys took advantage of the air place headset rental. That’s one of the big advantages of that business. You get to try out different headsets, without making a long-term commitment. But if you do like the headset, you can rent it to own. Thank you for helping a fellow aviator out with her small business. Take care and fly well!

Yo Russ thanks for another great video! When I arrive at an airport at night that isn't busy, I'll often do a low approach and go around first, to scare animals off the runway. Keep posting!
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
I love that idea! That's a great way to scare off any animals! I’ve never thought about doing that purposefully. I remember having to go around at Doylestown one time, because there were deer on the runway that time as well. But yeah that’s something that I may implement as well. Thank you so much for the positive feedback, and the support. It makes this journey that I’m on that much sweeter. Take care, and have a great weekend.

@RusscanFLY29 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! Yeah, I was definitely really focused on this landing. Fortunately, Doylestown has great lighting on his runway and taxiways. So it was definitely easy to see coming in. I’m always worried about deer on that runway as well! Anyway, thank you so much for watching, and your support overall.

Great decision making with the deer Russ! I almost shaved the tail off one in a 182, during dusk, at Solberg, many years ago doing simulated emergencies with a student. I added a Insta360 x4 to my camera kit with two GoPro 8s. Makes for some great video. I replaced the cages with SmallRig so I can add polarizers to the GoPros to clean up the image and make the sunrise/sunset and summer greens pop even more. I also have a Go3 I'm practicing with. The Insta360s seem to be more sensitive at night and make for a slightly better image. Doin' great Russ!
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
Thank you so much! Yeah, I almost had a feeling that those dumb deer were gonna come across the runway as soon as they hear my engine power up. And then, of course, as soon as I powered the engine down, they ran the other way! Definitely interesting animals for sure. At any rate, that camera set up we talk about sounds nice! I’m definitely looking into some other cameras, and set us myself. Anyway, take care!

Great video Russ! I enjoyed watching! I have flown at night only a couple times only with an instructor though. I just don’t like the single engine a not being able to see where I can go in an emergency! Fly safe my friend
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
I definitely hear you on that score! This was one of those things where it definitely wasn’t a plan night flight at all. That change in time, I just ran out of sunlight! But yeah, it definitely made me pay attention to what was happening with that engine for sure. Anyway, thank you so much for watching, and taking the time to comment. I definitely appreciate the support.

When you decide to go to Providence Town at night, remember that night over water or empty desert is IMC. Don't depend on the fine autopilot. Get good at hand flying Charlie IMC. While not much night other than Army medevac in the desert, but everywhere else I have been amazed at how many lights are on the ground. Turn all the glass lights down. In Army helicopters every light is red so it doesn't ruin our night vision. Good landing. On the ILS there will be sequenced lights pulsing up the glideslope at you and taking your eyes to the runway end identifier lights you have to see or miss. They really help with an approach to DH.
@RusscanFLY29 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for this awesome comment! I will say, I really don’t see myself flying over water at night anytime soon if ever. That sounds like a really scary proposition. Although I could see where people would do it, I don’t think I’d ever be comfortable doing that. But I definitely thank you for the wise words regarding being used to hand flying Charlie and IMC. That is definitely a must! Anyway, brother Jimmy, thank you as always for the amazing feedback. Take care!

@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
Thank you so much! Yeah, the runway at Doylestown is really easy to see at night, because they just redid all the runway lights. So they are pretty bright. But everywhere else, definitely a black hole.

Good point about researching travel at the destination airport. I'm picking up my "new to me" plane *_next week_* and after a couple months I plan to buy a folding e-scooter with a decent amount of range. Will keep the lithium battery nearby in case it needs to get dumped in an emergency.
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
That is a great idea for getting around at your destination airport - hope you have a great time! It’s also a great idea to be ready to part with that lithium battery as well. That’s been my only hold up in getting something like that, because it’s always within the realm of possibilities. But yeah, I need to get something so I can travel around, because there’s been a couple airports that didn’t have Uber, and I have was stuck walking for a while. Take care. By the way, stop back by to let me know when you get your baby!

Russ living the dream... When flying at night I guess you REALLY have to trust your instruments, especially if there are no landmarks or lights visible. Keep it safe....

Absolutely! It's amazing how much you have to rely on your instruments when the sun goes down.
@TheGospelQuartetParadiseАй бұрын
@@RusscanFLY I watch several channels that break down aviation accidents, and most of the ones that happen at night are due to spatial disorientation. I was listening to the ATC of the 737 that crashed in Lithuania and I noticed right off that when they cleared the pilot to land they did not give him the altimeter reading for the airport. I think were I a pilot I'd be trying to make sure all my instruments stay properly calibrated.
