I truly appreciate you sharing the adventure with us, Russ, and your commentary is heartwarming and genuine. Talking about life and stuff with my 50 year old son a couple of days ago he asked me it I knew the two things you can't do at the same time...and I said I didn't. He shared this quote which I had never heard: "You can't save face and your ass at the same time!" Sounded apt and true to me and it sure fits in the aviation field so wanted to share it with you and anyone reading! May the altitude be below you, the runway in front of you and airspeed MMS or better!

I'm not a pilot but I enjoy watching different aviation videos. One thing I thought a bit strange was to see your checklist positioned where it caused a reflection on the windshield. Surely that is a major visibility issue. I would never even drive a vehicle with anything on the dashboard which might impair visisbility.
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
I definitely hear you on that one, and I completely agree. What’s crazy, is that I don’t see that reflection at all! It only seems to come up when I’m filming a video. Hope you, your wife, and your daughter had a great Thanksgiving. Enjoy your time away from home. Two things I would suggest never falling victim to. #1 Getthereitis. This time of year weather can be unpredictable and change, but don't let the desire to get home overrule your recognition not to fly in conditions not optimal. #2 - Keep staying on top of your avionics. You do a great job of watching fuel management. Glad Charlie is doing well after the annual. God bless.

I pray you had a great Thanksgiving as well. We really did enjoy our time together, and the opportunity to break bread with my women folk, is just absolutely amazing. Your comment is definitely timely. I had a situation just today, where I was going to a close airport to get fuel, and I just had to get back to my home airport to put Charlie back in the hanger. Definitely has some pop-up showers, and an icing SIGMET popped up, and it could’ve gotten real dicey. So you’re definitely correct, not to let the need to get there therecloud my judgment. If I’m flying VFR outside my local area, I always file a VFR flight plan. I think it keeps me more aware of where I am and what I need to do. And that’s regardless if I’m using the autopilot or not.

The auto pilot is amazing it's there to make your workload easier. However, you have to monitor it to make sure the aircraft is doing what it says. If there is a problem with the AP while in flight and you can not quickly figure it out, then disconnect and revert to manually flying the airplane. Be safe, my brother
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
I completely agree on all fronts. I can definitely see where it makes my workload easier, but there’s definitely been times where some weird things have happened. So you’re right, to be safe, if I see something that doesn’t make any sense, then I disconnected pretty quickly. I’ve seen too many people getting into trouble. Just letting the auto pilot do whatever it’s gonna do anyway, thank you so much Brother for your support! Take care!

Low wing airplanes have a lot more dihedral than high wing. This gives you a tail wag wallow through turbulence. It is a better ride. You will appreciate the high desert and mountains. I often navigated visually to a mountain shape I recognized 100 miles away.

I enjoyed everything about your channel Russ! You have a gorgeous Cherokee with many upgrades. Is that the 180 hp? I co-owned November 1 389T a 1972 Cherokee 180 - G. I don’t have all the fancy avionics and engine instrumentation you have so I was surprised to hear at altitude and that cruise with 2400 RPMs that you were burning over 12 gallons per hour. We usually expect 10 gallons per hour and after landing when we check it’s about right. are you operating lean of Peak?
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
Thank you so much! I am glad that you enjoyed the channel, and I thank you so much for the support. It really means a lot to me. So I’m actually flying a piper Cherokee 235. It has the 05 40 Lycoming engine, that’s d rated, so it’s only 235 hp as opposed to a 300 that you have in the piper Cherokee six. So that’s why it burns a little more fuel, because it’s got a couple extra cans on it from the 180. Take care, and thank you so much again for the support.

@ yes I figured out the answer when I saw your next video and saw the 235 on the side. That thing is a beast! Lift anything you can fit in the cabin. Nice shoulder harnesses! My ‘72 has the stock shoulder harness that’s more like a car but those three point style harnesses look safer

Why no flight following and no pattern entry? New pilot here
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
Both very good questions! OK, so the majority of the time if you’re going to cross country, you should get Flight follow. It’s just another way to be safe, and have another pair of eyes on you and other traffic for traffic spotting purposes. For this particular flight, I just Decided not to get Flight following, given the fact that I knew how I was gonna be flying, and that I was gonna be out of a lot of high traffic areas. Secondly, a lot of times you can get away with doing a straight in approach after there’s not many planes in the patter. On this particular day, I was the only plane calling into land, so I didn’t feel the need to come into the traffic pattern in a traditional way. Hopefully that answers your questions!

Russ, You'll always get opinions when you ask any other pilots for their guidance. So, I too was troubled by the checklist on the glare shield resulting in obnoxious reflection which degraded outside view. AND, PLEASE... What is the benefit of the words, "Last call"? My opinion is BENEFITS ZERO.
@RusscanFLYАй бұрын
Yeah, I hear you about the checklist in the glare. I tell you, it looks much worse on camera than it does live. I don’t know why the GoPro picks up such a glare in the windscreen, cause I can guarantee you it doesn’t look like that in real life. So trust me, if anything impede in my vision, being a VFR only Pilot, I wouldn’t allow that to happen. In terms of the last call, I guess I was just trained that way. But I definitely hear you. I think in the air filter that I trained in, it was beneficial only from the standpoint that there were often times where there were a lot of students in the pattern, and so it was just nice to let them know that there was one last airplane. It was actually going to be in a pattern by calling last call. Anyway, I’m always open to feedback. Thank you so much, and I appreciate the support!

Calling my relationship with God “Bible thumping” is offensive. I am just expressing my faith in a way that makes sense to me and my family. I understand that people have different views, and I’m cool with that, But I find the first part of your comment highly unnecessary. I am a Christian man before anything else. Everything I do is informed by my faith. So I’m sorry if that offends you, but I will continue to share my “testimony” whenever I feel the need. I do thank you for taking the time to watch and support the video.

The term “bible-thumping” describes a zealot who is beating you up with their beliefs. Russ didn’t do this.

Wow, Russ didn’t even quote. Any scripture and he got accused of Bible thumping cause he said Bible study. Many people believe there is a God, but they failed to realize that God has a chief adversary, Satan the devil read first John 5:19. Satan is the one responsible for making expressions of faith taboo in this country and around the world. It fits his disposition to discourage people from sharing their love for our heavenly father. So anyone discouraging expressions of faith is unknowingly working for the wicked one (John 8:44). But We forgive you. #thumped Keep up the great work, Russ!
