@ Thanks for the info. I didn’t realize some 172’s had those windows. I found a 1974 172M on Controller that has those roof windows but other 172Ms didn’t have them. I assume it must have been an option that could be added at the time you ordered the new plane from Cessna.

Hi Russ. I’m glad you were able to figure out a solution in regards to your oil being too cool. I’ve never had an issue with that in the many different planes I’ve flown over the years. So I’m still learning new things from you. Yes the winds have been brutal lately but I finally got up yesterday after nearly a month. I noticed in your New Year’s video you mentioned you came early to the hangar to plug in your cord for your oil heater. We use an app called Switcheon which is great because i just leave mine plugged in and a few hours before I leave the house I can turn on and leave it on or set the timer and when I get to the hangar the oil is nice and warm. You may know about this app already but in case you didn’t, I want to give you a heads up. Blue skies and calm winds my friend. Keep up the great work.

But that teaches me to own my weaknesses with confidence and improve. No one else on youtube speaks openly like you are and that type of education is going to save a students life one day. Thanks for the video and for talking about it all. Valueable stuff right here. And on top of it all, you're giving us quality videos which requires time editing when you could be doing more flying. Russ, all true! As you recognized, flying in the winter, like the summer and spring, is different for many different reasons. And all airplanes react differently in various weather conditions and geographical locations, as well as altitudes and attack angles. And you recognized Charlie has to be in her ideal operating parameters to provide the best performance. On another note, I'm always in awe of the view of the world we live from up above. And I love the way you take time to enjoy the views. And even so, you take time to monitor instruments and aviate! Tip 1: CO monitor is necessary if not installed. Typically they last seven to ten years before replacement's necessary. Tip 2: In my days on the line in cold temps, before i donned headsets on exposed skin is to set it on my thighs for a few seconds to warm up the plastics. Great flying - stay safe!
@RusscanFLY
@RusscanFLY Күн бұрын
I couldn’t agree more! As I’m learning in this aircraft, and that’s the thing that I love that I get to fly the same airplane all the time, performance is different in the varying seasons. I never got a chance to appreciate that as much, because I was renting so many different types of aircraft. Also, with the little section of 152 I was flying, it performed pretty much basically the same all the time. Low and slow! At any rate, thank you for taking the time to comment, and for your suggestion about the headset. That ice cold headset on my bald head is like ice pics in my brain! Lol! Be well!

Russ another winter flying concern is carbon monoxide from your cabin heat. Most airplane cabin air is heated by the exhaust manifold. If manifold has a leak there is a good chance of carbon monoxide poisoning. You need a monitor to monitor the carbon monoxide in the cabin. They are not expensive but do not use the strips they sell they are not reliable. Thanks for the vidio
@RusscanFLY
@RusscanFLY 2 күн бұрын
That’s definitely the truth, and it’s something that I definitely think about for sure. I wanna get another century, it has the carbon monoxide detector associated with it. Until then, I’ll probably follow your suggestion. But you are absolutely correct, carbon monoxide is a silent killer in every forum, especially in the cockpit of an airplane. Thank you for watching, and taking the time to offer this wise comment! Have a great weekend!

But the extra performance! Yeehaww!!!🤣🤣 Hey Russ, my plane came with an aluminum plate that has vents in it so you can adjust the air coming in over the oil cooler. It goes on with 2 screws so in the warmer weather you just take it off. Works great!

It definitely would make life easier, than all the other alternatives that I’ve read or saw on KZbin. I used to love flying during the winter in my friend's Piper Archer 2, which had 180 horsepower. And do remember him saying the need to put a block off plate on the oil cooler to keep it from cooling too much.... Cold starting an aviation engine in freezing weather can also be bad, which keeping your aircraft in a heated hangar is best during the winter, although some small airports offer an engine preheating service if you call ahead.. Definitely not something that non aviation people think about...
@RusscanFLY
@RusscanFLY 2 күн бұрын
True indeed! I just saw somebody jury rig this interesting engine preheat to a propane gas tank. It looked interesting, but the thought of having a propane tank hooked to this heater thing looked a little sketchy to me! Anyway, I completely agree about the metal plate to manage the oil cooler. I had a mechanic tell me the same thing. I was hoping to find one on the market, but they’re actually pretty hard to come by. Anyway, thank you for all of the great suggestions!

I find such a joy in being a general aviation pilot, and it is truly a blessing to be able to share it with my family. But it’s also a huge blessing when people Like you send these amazing comments recognizing how special this is for me. Thank you so much! That handle that you see turning above my head, is called the trim lever. What that does is it allows me to take away pressures from the YOKE when I’m flying. When it moves automatically like that, that’s the auto pilot adjusting the trim for me. Excellent question! Anyway, thanks again for the amazing comment and the support. It is greatly appreciated!

Love the performance of winter flying but I go not like cold weather, Cessna 182 heaters either roast your feet or you freeze, new video coming up we fly from Kansas to Louisiana and decided to hand fly the whole round trip flight…. I needed that been relying on the autopilot way too much lately, so 7+ hours of hand flying got me back feeling comfortable again if the autopilot should fail…. I don’t move the plane until oil temps are at least 80°F.

Wow, that’s a lot of hand Line! But I guess that would be what you’d have to do if your airplane didn’t have auto pilot. You named your AP Carol? I have not found any information on winterizing the 235. In the 140, I had a winterization plate that had usage described in the POH. I don't see that in the 235. Hence I've been hesitant to do anything to the oil cooler. I did have an interesting experience recently where after a long flight in 1-2 degrees C OAT, I went to fuel the airplane. And as per my normal routine, I pop the oil dipstick to let the accumulated steam depart. But first it didn't steam and second, the entire coil filler neck was cool to the touch. So I filled up fuel, and after it had sat for a while, the oil filler tube was then warm to the point of uncomfortable to touch. My conclusion was that the air running over the top of the engine being very cold was keeping that engine quite cool. Looking back at the flight in video, I can see the oil temps are a little cooler than normal, but not drastically. Might have to think about how to run the engine in the cold.
@RusscanFLY
@RusscanFLY 2 күн бұрын
When are things that I didn’t say in the video is I got with an A&P, and they walked me through the whole oil cooling system. My engine is modified a little bit in that some things have been moved around for ease of service. Because of that, and the amazing way the previous owner kept the cowling, it is extremely efficient and cooling. So he definitely recommended some modification to the oil cooler, and that definitely did the trick! my oil temps are running more like 175 to 180, as opposed to diving down to 78° and having warning lights on the engine monitor. So yeah, modification was definitely necessary, and there’s even a thought to creating an actual oil cooler plate. The things you learn when you have your own airplane! Take care, and fly well!
