How's lunch at Cincinnati Lunken? They use to have a muse on field restaurant.

I’d forgotten we just ended up having a bunch of snacks at the FBO and then getting back in the air. No kore restaurant at the FBO we used, anyway.

Unfortunatley the restaurant in the terminal/tower closed 2020 and never reopened. The City of Cincinnati states no plans to re-open as of 2024... In fact they closed the runway used by most student pilots.

Looking forward to the rest of the trip. That was a constant bumpy ride...yikes hard on the back. ;)

Yeah, that was not pleasant. Wait til you see the first leg home from New Orleans! :) Thanks for watching, Gary.

Love the flight! Great! I love the ADM and constant adjusting of the flight to manage risk! Getting an instrument rating really helps to reduce the stress of clouds ahead as long as icing is not a factor in a light aircraft. I would have filed an instrument plan and planned the RNAV/ILS into KLUK with a divert farther west.
@WingsOverTO5 ай бұрын
Thanks very much. Interesting. I hadn’t thought of diverting further west. IFR wasn’t an option when I departed from Toronto but became an option as I got close to Cincinnati. But it didn’t occur to me to do a split flight plan VFR-IFR. I’ll have to keep that in mind. Thanks for watching.

@@WingsOverTO interesting; do they not allow for an IFR international departure for GA? I’ve only ever flown biz jets in or out of Canada.
@WingsOverTO5 ай бұрын
@@amamdawhatever oh no they do, and I’ve done that before. But my plane is not rated for FIKI and icing was a problem that day. IFR altitudes would have required me to go through the clouds - not an option, unfortunately.

Crossed into the U.S. around 8:10 to 8:30. Was there any special hand off to enter the U.S.?
@WingsOverTO16 күн бұрын
You need to be either on a VFR flight plan with flight following, or an IFR flight plan, when you cross the border. Then it's just like flying around in either the US or Canada and staying in contact with ATC; they'll tell you when to switch over to the center controllers in the other country. Very straightforward.

Any thoughts/comparisons of the experience clearing customs there vs Port Clinton? Anything favouring one over the other (beyond timing in a trip)?
@WingsOverTO4 ай бұрын
I’d say it depends on whether you’re planning to stop for lunch. Both FBOs have a courtesy car, but Lunken has many more restaurant options nearby. Port Clinton just had a few diners. Both are nice airports, not too busy, with reasonably priced fuel.

Excellent planning as always. Did you consider filing IFR on this trip?
@WingsOverTO5 ай бұрын
Thanks, Reale. I chose not to fly IFR because of icing. I would have had to be up in the clouds, and the temps that day were just above freezing at ground level. Unfortunately, the instrument rating isn't a cure-all. :)

Well now, uploading one with all that white stuff in it is a nice depressing way to end August. 😉. Still, like watching this.

lol yeah, we did that flight in late March, and I’d forgotten how much snow there was at the time.

Kam - I find it interesting that with your IR you chose to bounce along with your wife at 3k, instead of filing and flying like 8 or 10k where it had to be a lot smoother -- looked like the tops weren't an issue and you'd have a more pleasant ride for the wife? Anyway, she seems a trooper -- I'd'a might'a decided that Cincinnati was far enough for the day after that myself!! hahahahaha --
@WingsOverTO5 ай бұрын
Hey Dan. It was the icing that was an issue. The icing level was about 1000’ AGL in Ontario that day, and there was icing reported all around, so I couldn’t punch through the clouds and get above. I thought about getting up higher as we went south but the temperature just wasn’t warming up much until we got pretty close to Cinci, if I’m remembering right. But yeah, M is a trooper. 😀 Thanks for watching, Dan.

Oh and one thing I was worried about was clouds were reported as scattered and broken for most of the route that morning, so even if I could get up top, getting back down through them might have become an issue.
