Bro that motor is a AirJet DLE 170, the company has been around quite a long time, and it's on you for not doing the proper pre-flight checks of a brand new motor. Feels disingenuous as fuck to act like it isn't a wonderful little piece of kit. You're just too used to being sent perfect sponsor examples that were ran through for you with a fine toothed comb first; and you didn't do the responsible thing before using it.

There's another PPG guy who bought one of those and he replaced the piston rings which improved the compression & power, and replaced the muffler & prop. Power adders- perhaps the addition of 2 'modded to fit' go-ped chambers or even have a couple fabbed(way better results potential) by someone that has the proper skills, would likely yield some SERIOUS power gains. There are tons of variables involved and you want to have a 'mirrored set' being it is a little twin. The short- exhaust/tuning is what makes the 2stroke so inviting and ideal for this and every app where power to weight is a big factor. With a decent pipe setup on this unit, I could see serious power increases being attainable. Drawbacks also are involved tho- reliability being the most important(this may be lessof an issue than I initially thought tho). Well, you DID do it, you got the Ali-Express going, and exceeded all expectations I had, then even flew a smaller wing that performed well(given the circumstances) doing more than I'd have guessed possible! GREAT content Tucker, thanks for sharing!

I've been flying large gas twin cylinder motors on RC aircraft for almost 30 years and we NEVER use the gaskets on the exhaust. Either use nothing (which will work fine unless the flanges of the exhaust and mufflers are not machined well) or use a very thin layer of high temp sealant. If using the sealant, apply a thin layer to the muffler side and let it set (long enough to touch without it getting on your finger), and then mount the mufflers. Done.

You could either use Nord washers for the exhaust, or just buy a jig to drill the bolts yourself for safety wire. For either case, I would recommend using heli-coil inserts on the motor if it doesn't have threaded inserts already, as they'll make a big difference in how well a bolt can retain torque in aluminum. The heat cycles and expansion rates between steel and aluminum are likely what's causing the initial loosening, while the vibrations are what make the bolts self-removing. It's also possible that the design needs more bolts than what it has, but you can't do a whole lot about that.
@toddfranklin63

I came to recommend Nord Washers as well. Safety wire is a good thought, too!
@TheTurpin1234
@TheTurpin1234 Жыл бұрын
Loctite doesn't work when it gets hot. Thats how you loosen it. I'd imagine the threads in the motor aren't thick enough (the hole was drilled too big before tapping). You could drill a small hole thru each bolt head, and safety wire them together.

I was going to suggest lock wire as well. I used to use it inside a 25mm gun when I was on board a ship. Designed to withstand a substantial amount of abuse with concussive force, definitely would hold up with the small amount of torque/ vibration that engine produces.

On our rc gassers we leave out the gasket and just scuff up both surfaces and use high temp permatex. The gasket material tends to just blowout leaving the screws loose. Also full strength red loctite is only achieved with ferrous metals, non ferrous aluminum needs Henkel Loctite SF 7649 activator to get it to reach full strength. Simple heat from a pencil flame or soldering iron loosens them up with ease.

In a lot of situations where failure of a fastener can be catastrophic they do what’s known as “staking” the bolts. The basic premise is cut small relief cuts in the bolt head, then use a punch or other tool to force metal from the affixed part into the relief cut so it’s no longer able to rotate.

Finding a way to safety wire those bolts seems like a must-do, also with that being a small flat twin you may see slightly better engine performance by finding someone who can help you Fab a two into one exhaust. That small twin could definitely benefit from some exhaust scavenging. Added bonus, it could be slightly less ear-splitting
@roomtemp6374

On a two cycle ported engine there are more power gains to be had from a couple of well tuned expansion chambers. With a ported engine and a tuned exhaust the shockwave reflects backward towards the port which increases the cylinder pressure, effectively giving it a compression ratio increase. I agree about the securing the fasteners. And I'm pretty sure if it was on my back I wouldn't mind trading a few newtons for decibels by hanging a muffler on it.

Try some Stage 8 Locking Header Bolts for the exhaust fix. They have little metal fins that don’t allow the bolt to back out past a certain point. Easier than lock wire, and easily removable to retighten if necessary. Plus they are made for race cars, so they are strong and don’t back out easily even without the fins. Worked for me on a Cors Air BD172cc that kept breaking out exhaust bolts
@Faustj515

Motors like that are known to be very hard to keep muffler bolts in because the gaskets are smashed by vibration and they do not rebound. The best solution is to get rid of the gasket and use Ultra Copper as a gasket, also clean the bolt threads and those in the motor with acetone. Then coat the bold threads with Ultra Copper and put it back together and let it sit for a couple of days. If you can safety wire that will work also.

There’s a couple guys who made series of videos on this paramotor. They found an aftermarket exhaust system with muffler similar to a standard paramotor exhaust system that greatly reduces noise and gave it a little more thrust, they also found a better carbon fiber propeller that gave it considerably more thrust. It’s still a alliexpress paramotor for $3k so there’s only so much polishing you can do to the turd but I think those guys really made it as good as it can possibly get. Cool stuff though, entertaining as always. Safe landings bro and smooth skies my friend. I’m a free flight pilot so I normally don’t fly smooth skies, I look for instability in my forecast and usually launch around noon, a little different sport than PPG, but we all enjoy the sky.

For the muffler user nord lock washers with the bolts then after you run the engine for 5 min or so to warm up, shut it off, then try re-tightening the bolts again since you'll probably get another 1/8 turn tighter with the engine warm.

Exhaust bolts on lawnmowers will give you a clue what to do I think. They use a piece of metal welded to the muffler and bent tabs up onto the bolt heads. Your bolt heads will need to be squared off on the sides, so grind them square if necessary.

For the bolts you could either use locking tabs to stop the bolts from backing out or you could switch over to using studs and nylon lock nuts. Also if you find the green loctite that stuff is damn near impossible to get out

You all probably all know this already, but if there is one of you that doesn't: If a bolt on your engine is threaded into aluminum, there is a way to increase the reliability of the connection. Heli-Coil or generically helical inserts are a God sent. They look like a fully compressed spring of hardened steel. You drill the original threaded hole to a set size and re-tap the larger whole for the thread size (outside diameter) of the insert. You screw the insert in the newly threaded hole and the inside threads (created by the helical steal) are the size of the original bolt. When using these inserts, one is more likely to destroy the bolt than strip the threads. It is much more reliable under heavy torque specs. I would suggest using them if there isn't room for error (like if you are in the sky hanging on paracord).

To solve your exhaust bolts problem .. Craft 4 base plates, including drill holes, that match the cylinder heads and cut a 2"(?) long pipe x2 and weld a base plate on each end making 2 extensions. Now you have access to wire the now 8 bolts. You'll need 2 additional gaskets, resource for bolts, nuts, and washers. Size plates and pipes to fit application. A metal fabrication shop should be able to handle making the extensions.

Mad props for strapping yourself to this RC engine, I'm also super impressed it performed well (after lots of tuning). My un-professional guess is the exhaust could be fixed with a proper expansion chamber, hopefully removing some of the oscillations from non-uniform expansion waves. You'd also probably be able to get more power with it too, but that would probably put you at a higher risk of blowing the whole engine up... Do they even make expansion chambers for this type of motor? Can't wait for the next video!

For the lack of something to watch, I watched another paramotor pilot fly one of these little motors, but after an initial try, he abandoned the attempt and decided to modify the motor. He stripped it down, changed the rings, had a tuned pipe exhaust made for it, upgraded other parts, fitted a more efficient prop and more. After all these upgrades he checked the on ground performance..... He got another 1000 RPM, noise was almost halved, power was up by around 25% and it flew effortlessly.

Nice!! I'm assuming that even with a larger wing, this thing probably wouldn't have enough power for a bigger guy like myself (6'3"/270 lbs) to operate safely. As for the exhaust bolts I'd probably ditch them, re-tap the threads one size bigger, and install studs w/lock washers and countersunk nuts.

Something I always have on hand, I use it on anything that I don't want coming loose: "Loctite Thread Lock" Also, on wheels or any part that you really don't want coming loose while doing 150 plus mph motorbike racers drill a narrow hole through the head of each the bolts and use wire to keep them from coming loose. If there are bolts close together you can even wire them to each other as this will stop them from turning loose. If you really want to be sure then I would consider doing both
@ahaffke
@ahaffke Жыл бұрын
Easiest way to lock the exhaust bolts knowing you are still tinkering would be "locking tabs". you bend the tabs down onto the block then the other side up on the flats of the hex fastener. Easy to install/remove. Wiring would require you to drill the bolt and wire to the one/more of the other bolts. time consuming on and time consuming off. replacing with studs would be the long term fix.
