Also ignore those people in the comments talking about FAA regulations, because frankly, they know about next to nothing. Cheers Mate!

Great video Chris. The flight was enjoyable but your antics were even more fun. I guess you know that running the battery down that low is going to shorten its life span but it was worth it just to say you did it. The farthest I've gone with the Mavic is 3.5 miles one-way and still had 2-3 bars on the video icon. I did find that when you get a ways out having the antennae pointed at it is critical. On that trip if I moved the controller a half inch off it would lose video.

Nice test. I can't view the video or listen to the audio right at this moment, so forgive me if you covered this: What was the wind speed and direction relative to your flight direction? And I wonder if you'd get different results at different speeds (i.e., a measure of efficiency)? I've noticed that flying the Mavic in Sport mode at higher speeds really sucks down the battery.

Cracking me up again Chris...I was flying over a lake from a boat to catch the wake boarding. when it low battery I tried to bring it to the boat to catch but soon as the hands went under it would climb. Did this until it said "screw you..I'm going home to land" which was our starting point also in the middle of the lake. by the time I figured out how to cancel it got the "critical low" warning and said "LANDING NOW!" In the middle of the lake from 10 feet. My heart was racing and I was in full panic mode but figured out how to cancel and fly back to the boat but the battery was so low it was having trouble keeping altitude. My buddy had to jump up and grab it and cut his finger on the props. Learned SOOOO much on that flight. Hilarious looking back but scary as hell during this event.

A few comments about leaving the camera protector on and an overheating issue. DJI has confirmed that enough air gets through the protector that it isn't an issue. In fact they designed so it could be left on for new users so they don't accidentally break the gimbal on landings. On thi particular flight Chris has stated it was 40 F. that day so even at maximum speed it wouldn't overheat.

When doing this, you can change your home point, should have two options, radio location or drone location, just find an open area, set it real quick, and keep flying. That way, should it return to home, it doesn't go ALL the way back to where you started from.

so when return home engages, you have about 5 seconds to cancel it. it did pop up on my screen, and I cancelled it. i was in gps mode for the flight, and when it started the emergency land, i could move it foreword back and left right, but not up. So i was able to dodge the trees, but not regain altitude.

Chris, do you have a reason for flying in "Sport" mode? I thought that drains the battery faster. Was it because you were in a car that needed to go faster than 30 MPH? If you hit the power button one time I think it silences the lower battery warning. I think you would have gotten 5-6 more minutes in reg "P-mode"
@AlexTer2217 жыл бұрын
TekSone in p mode (position) the mavic fly's only up to 15mph I believe but in s (sport) it fly's up to 40mph so he will have to have it on to be able to stay with the car and also get there faster

Pieter Smuts ah! The mavic comes with a clear, dome shaped cover to protect the camera when transporting it. I left it on for the flight, just in case of a crash, i thought it might give it a little protection! But it causes that weird glare, and ruins the shot 😬

It has vents and DJI themselves recommend flying it with the cover. Besides, it doesn'ttake a genius to realize that they wouldn't have made it transparent if it isn't intended to be used during flight or recording.

@sirexobee216 жыл бұрын
You said the bad comments would be coming but to be totally honest I think that the way you did it although risky was better than a lot of other ways I’ve seen it done. Most of the clips for distance tests are done with no planning. Wind isn’t factored in and certainly no VLOS. You did break a few regulations but to be honest I feel like what u did was less risky than many others I’ve seen. You weren’t flying over crowds of people. You maintained VLOS for the most part. You took note of wind speed and direction and adjusted accordingly. I suppose u forgot that at critical battery 10 % that it will auto land. But I enjoyed this video greatly!!! I don’t think u put anyone in danger here🙂 not even little mavic.
@spiralmozfan7 жыл бұрын
Noticed how your ending altitude was negative? The Mavic compensated very well for the altitude change. I'm curious, how were you trying to cancel auto-land? Did the Mavic auto navigated between the trees to find a good jsmding spot or did you take control?
@ChrisRollins7 жыл бұрын
+SPIRALMOZFAN thanks for watching. The negative altitude was, i believe, the elevation of the city where i landed was lower than that of where i took off. To cancel, there is a cancel auto land icon on the screen, but it would not activate. And i manually avoided the trees at the end.
@spiralmozfan7 жыл бұрын
Chris Rollins thx man, keep up the good work. Now I'm worried and have to figure out the auto-land overrride sequence on the remote. I knew how to on my P3S but haven't read how to on the Mavic. I love that little guy!

I understand well your ... soooo light and windy jitters Chris, was caffeine free? Interesting mission. A pity that you didn't also well adjusted your footage exposures, both from air and from the car, terribly dark, exposure easily adjustable, in automatic or in manual setting. The right wheel adjusts the exposure time also during the recording. I understand well that the priority of your mission was different, but it was also very easy to consider this point without difficulty, just with the histogram overlayed on the screen you can see exposition errors and compensate.
