@@WildKiwiAdventurer X-Plane 11 is definitely a desktop flight simulator! It's very realistic and quite close to the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. The addon aircraft that I fly is the Toliss A319, and it's the most realistic Airbus addon for the simulator, and has many liveries including VH-VHD.

I was surprised at how low the plane was flying alongside Erebus, given the history of Air New Zealand Flight 901 crashing into Erebus.

Erebus is a mountain just the same as any other, and it's impossible to fly to McMurdo Station without flying past it. The accident happened due to a series of bad errors that should never have happened.

Christchurch is New Zealands second or 3rd largest city. Its the closest airport to McMurdo Sound where I went in Antarctica

Its an Australian government A319 that is especially designed for long distance flights. It is not possible to buy the tickets as it was chartered by the New Zealand Antarctic program to take people down to work at the science research stations for New Zealand and the US.

WildKiwiAdventurer alright so it’s NZ Antarctic Territory, right? And you can’t travel unless you work for the research stations, but I’ve heard somewhere that u can go to some territories like Brit A.T and Argentine A.T; perhaps I were wrong mate :(

@@mzk7419 you can go down by tourist expedition ship, there are usually a lot of trips every year going down from South America and a couple going to the new Zealand territory. There is one or two flying options, look up quark expeditions. But 95 percent of tourism is by ship. This season everything is canceled because of corona sadly. I was meant to work on 11 different expeditions there this year and it's all canceled.

It's very hard to get a flight there, maybe with quark expeditions or ALE.but otherwise it's just science work that has flights south

I worked at a research station so it is only people who are employed who can go on this flight. There is no other way to stay there. You can go down by expedition ship, or fly and ship with Quark expeditions, or fly and stay for a week or 2 with Antarctic Logistics but they are very expencive.

You can travel to Antarctica on a tourist trip. Look up Aurora expeditions for example. Just not really by airplane unless you have a lot of money.
