It is so much nicer to see a ship in the water in stead of being at the shipyard. Btw it is IJsselmeer en not IJselmeer.

Of course it is IJsselmeer. We finished the video yesterday about midnight and it was a very very busy week. I knew there was something left to do, now I know what.

Lovely to see. Almost zero wash shows how efficient the hull is. Make sure Barbara gets some good time in control at the helm. It is essential to have as much competence aboard as possible.

The Flying Coney certainly has a Captain, Daniel, aboard. The boat also has a Queen aboard. Barbara, you are amazing, beautiful and articulate especially with the English. You command exactly where the camera should be and in what sequence. Very professional. The project is almost too much to take in, at one setting. But you've assembled the documentation in just the right amounts of scenery, boat-work, humor and struggle in each episode to make the viewer look for more sessions. Like Daniel says, "...Take it easy and slow. Everything will come together correctly." Barbara, you are an awesome young woman. We hope to see more of you and the saga of The Flying Coney. Blue skies and following winds.

@FlyingConey

Her hull was designed to sail through the water and provide a stable working platform in rough sea states. That's why she will be a good sailing ship. Also her first engine only had 150hp so it was important that the hull shape is efficient. Later fishing vessels like the trawlers are designed to tow a heavy net.

Great video as always! Can you talk next time why you stay in the Netherlands instead of Germany for the language or in Danmark for the cheap docking? Thanks.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
We will go into the details when we move the boat to Germany. We bought the boat in Lelystad and were kind of stranded. A big problem we're facing in The Netherlands is health care because they do not accept the European health insurance. Germany is cheaper in most regards. Also we speak Austrian German wich is similar to German and we can communicate with Germans in their native language. 😁

A ship needs to be in the water 😉 With a boat refit you can decide if you want to have a spot on the hard or in the water. Most prefer to be on the hard but Salt & Tar also did a lot of work while the boat was in the water. We don't have a choice because the yards do need the limited space on the slipways. You know sometimes there are emergencies and they need to take a boat out ASAP, so they always want to have at least one free spot.

Still learning boat handling, but the most important rule in the Marina, around congested area and the yard is to never go any faster than you are willing to run into something. Momentum is a thing. Also, don't be afraid stop, back up or go around if the approach isn’t what you want it to be. Good video, keep up the good work!

I think that's partly because of the edit. It looks more interesting if there's movement in the shot so mostly I have picked one were I turned the wheel. I tried to make it logical but I've not shown the minutes were I haven't touched the wheel at all.

Just a curious question, have you considered a more traditional coach roof for Flying Coney. It would give her the long graceful lines of a sailing yacht and produce less windage than the current wheel house.

Such a beautiful ship, and just the right size! I’m very impressed with the vast improvement in y’all’s docking skills! At the same time, it would be grand if you could get hands on a salvaged bow thruster. Honing your skill as a helmsman should never stop, because who knows when ol mr bow thruster may suddenly decide to go on an unscheduled holiday. But man-o-man are they sweet! Anyway, I’m sure I’m singing that old song to the choir. I really so excited for you two! Keep up the great work, learn more new skills. If your ship requires do much manouevering to turn, you might need a bigger rudder for sailing, when you get to that stage.
@FlyingConey

The rudder is already modified for sailing. This was done during her conversion back in 1977. Good for sailing but no fishtail and no endplates wich would it make better in combination with the prop. It's just a small harbor.

@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
Recently we've talked with a couple who restores a wooden KFK equipped with a Deutz F12M. So the same dimensions and the same amount of power. But they have a consumption of 30-40 liters an hour 😵 But you're right about the sails! EDIT: We are also as heavy as 60! Bentleys.

@@FlyingConey By the way, I've piloted a boat around Friesland a couple of times, but always with both a bow and stern thruster, which makes it easy to do. Kudos to you for doing it in those small harbours with only the prop. I guess with such a heavy boat there's maybe less windage?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
The good thing is you have time because everything happens slow. You can use the momentum. We do not move the boat all that often so a bow thruster isn't necessary at the moment. It would roughly cost about 15 000€ but it's also more maintenance work and we have to take the boat out of the water every two years. So it's always possible to get one once we transition from a refit to a sailing channel 😊
