Quality is to be commended, even when it is the Margate Giant! And Hornby's J36 (version R3621 in my case) is one of their best little steamers yet! Good running, great looks and very maintainable, a complete package!

Are there any TTS Diesels you can recommend?

Hey Scott, are you looking for a sound fitted Diesel in general, or a tts one? Most of the Hornby TTS Diesel are in the railroad range, and all of them are ex-Lima toolings. This means the detail isn’t great, but of course that’s fine, as it’s what you would expect in the railroad range. The biggest problem though is that they are all still only one bogie drive, and use the old ringfield motor, meaning the performance from them isn’t that great. If your just wanting a good running diesel with sound, I personally would recommend something from Bachmann or Accurascale. While they are really expensive, the running from them is top notch, and on top of that the detail is really good too. If you don’t care too much about detail to, you could probably also find an older Bachmann diesel used, as any diesel from Bachmann tooled from around 2005 onwards from Bachmann would run really well. If you really don’t want to spend much though, I know Hornby have some Deltics and 47s with sound coming out soon in their railroad range. I also be leve they have a 37 on the way to, but I could be wrong on that. Edit: sorry that was a ridiculously long comment…

The TTS sound decoders are pretty hit or miss to be honest with you, from my own personal experience the class 40 sounds pretty respectable and the 47 definitely doesn't sound bad for the money either

Bachmann 37/4 lad Cheaper than Accurascale but still a decent model

@@Northerner_Transport_Hub actually the accurascale one is about 30 pounds cheaper, but both are still quite expensive...

that snow plough was the only reason i got this loco as it looked so good with it

I do consider the new BR Apple Green one Hornby announced early this year. It does look quite beautiful and yes, the snowplow is unique. Really great model. Hopefully mine takes the points better. I didn't know they are this easy to service, that's a surprise for me, but that makes it even better for my beginner skill level of maintaining models.

I think a Bachmann 812 would be a great Loco and it would fit well with the layout

My one and only gripe around the J36, is that the only LNER livery is the short-lived one from immediately post-Grouping (1923/24), which would make it a mighty faff to change out to something more timeless.

Something that I do whenever I buy track secondhand I always give it a soap scrub, and then use fine sandpaper on the top surface of the rails to make sure there's nothing on them and it's clean metal, maybe give a the sandpaper a try wherever your models cut out?

I would add I put this alongside another couple of Locos from Hornby when they really hit a purple patch about 10yrs ago..The D16/3 and the J15, both with diecast boilers , 5 pole motors , and exemplary running, very comparable to the J36. Out of the 3 locos my favourite flips between the J15 and the J36. (Honerable mention to J27 from oxford rail, and the G5 from Bachmann /TMC, if we need to keep it strictly Scottish)

I agree Hornby's J36s are lovely locos. I have the same version as you, but wouldn't mind getting Maud too though they're hard to get hold of at a decent price. The J15s and K1s are excellent as well and all have diecast boilers. The K1 is arguably my favourite of my goods engines. I think it's mogul wheel configuration makes it stand out from the rest of my locos.

@@HyperCat72 I'm a Caley fan but the unequal wheel spacing of 812's wheels make the NBR C class better in my opinion.

Strange, my j36 (identical to yours) works on dc better than dcc and runs over old hornby points no problemo, and i have not cleaned the wheels in a month or so (i know it needs doing before someone comments) and i have done the same bits and bobs to mine, only thing is the holders for i presume a shovel only included one, is it meant to be like that? Lovley loco ya got there, hope ya keep enjoying one of hornbys better locomotives 😃

If you want a class 47 go with Bachmann they are way better than hornby’s and the sound fitted deluxe models have an amazing sound file
