Loving this episode, I’m happy you are painting it now, fake patina is a funny thing, the way it’s done on Alex’s drag car I actually think is really good with the exposed carbon and it suits what that car is, but for a more daily driven car I .think it’s fine for small repair areas but when it starts getting about say 20-25% then it loses something. Plus I’m really excited to see a nice home built 55 that has nice paint etc but isn’t a 6 figure show build. As for episode on the car I’m not sure about other people but I’m more than happy to watch episodes when you don’t even get stuff done but,for want of a better way to put it, it feels like we are just hanging with you guys whilst working on the car

I owned my 57 for 18 years! During that time I did several modifications that brought that car forward! First, any mod worth considering must be done with "Name Brand" Parts! Thus adding value to the complete project! Which brought value to the sale of the car! Like your brake lines! I didn't get stock materials replacements! I did Willwood with Stainless steel brake lines! With 4 wheel disc brakes! Actually, One of the very best mods I did was a complete 21 circuit wiring harness! Yes, a electrical upgrade made a huge difference between things being iffy and NOT! You have yet to discover some of the things I discovered during my 18 years of "driving fun"!!

I might also mention, when your paint on the frame is good and dry, roll it outside and use your little tractor and stand the frame up and wash out the inside of the frame tubes. They collect a lot of dust dirt and debris, which helps rot the tubes out.. I recently helped build a 55 two door, and it was in the 1998 flood. The frame rails had almost 1/2 of dirt and muck inside. We all know how much dirt moves around in West Texas. LOL.... Can't wait to see which way yall go with this thing. PS please move the rear springs either inside or under the frame rails, there is just not enough room for tires on these cars. Mini tub when doing trunk pan. Good luck.

I tell you, I started using one of those clip-on Rustoleum can guns and feel it makes rattlecan painting a lot easier and more controlled. You definitely don't get finger fatigue. The rustoleum design (clamps around the center of the can) fits more cans than the one that snaps into the center. You might want to pick up a couple for your shop.

I had to laugh when you spoke about going to Dallas. Texans seem to always talk about the time it takes to get anywhere, not mileage. Its almost always in hours. Six hours here, four hours there, like it was nothing. During my 2.5 years in Lubbock, it was at least six hours from anywhere.

I think it is wonderful that you are doing this frame restoration. I had a restoration body shop when I started out in this trade. I used to do the body and frames for a company called T Bird Products. They restored 50's T Birds to like new condition. I wanted to comment that I used to take the frame as a separate unit to the sand blasters, and they had a huge Caterpillar motor sand blaster, and when it came back the whole thing, every nook and cranny looked like new metal. Leave the suspension on, rear, differential etc just like you have it. When it comes back spend an hour blowing sand out through the holes in the frame. THEN TREAT IT WITH LIQUID METAL PREP that gets the metal ready for accepting paint, and destroys those nasty little rust seeds created by metal powder meeting with the moisture in the air. All car manufacturers do "Pickling" dipping the bodies into acid/metal prep. Then go ahead and prime everything and paint it black. Then you go ahead and break down the suspension in order to replace for example the rubber bushings, and it is great if you put on new large washers and nuts. Makes it indistinguishable from new. You might as well do the rest of it. Take the body apart, and have the sandblaster do all of the innards surfaces like door jambs, motor compartment, floor both in passenger compartment, and trunk floor. DO NOT HAVE THEM SANDBLAST THE OUTSIDE PANELS INCLUDING THE HOOD, DOORS ETC. But DO have them sandblast the inners of those panels. You see the large blasters can heat up the metal on the straight part of the panels to the point that they warp, so deliver the body, and frame to them with the outside of the panels already stripped down to bare metal. The secret to stripping is to use a good amount of stripper. Let the stripper do all of the work. No heavy scraping needed. I think it is great what you are doing to the frame. We used to spend $250 to have the frame and body innards sand blasted. It took all of the work out of it. It is a show car ready procedure, indistinguishable from new.

Try bagging the part after applying the stripper or do smaller sections. Once the stripper off gasses and starts to dry, the paint re-adheres and can be a pain. The bag will contain the fumes and help release the paint. I do this with aircraft paints and epoxy primers and it really helps. You can just tape a trash bag over the area. Good luck looks like lots of work but lots of fun! Love the show watch you guys all the time.

That power steering box ya'll bought is a very good investment, they work great. Those front ends work good, just put tubular A frames on it and lower it just a little. select a strong shock. Then convert to disc brakes and your good. I usually cut down the OEM steering column and cut two flats on the shaft to connect a rag joint and it will work great and looks original on top. If the rag joint is a little too close to the firewall, weld in a short piece of 4 inch exhaust stack for a cove, works great.
