Scania were sold in the US in the 80s. I still have some sales brochures. But after a few years they decided to leave. One of the reasons was that US customers were used to picking their own choice of engine and transmission from different suppliers. That was against Scanias idea of selling complete trucks where they could have a long warranty on the whole vehicle.

I just came back at home from another work shift (truck driver). It’s incredible to see a Scania rolling through the U.S.! I’m from Sweden and drive a Scania five days per week... these trucks are packed with advanced tech like radar, automatic transmissions, and lift axles. What I love is the mutual admiration between our countries. In Sweden, we’re captivated by the iconic design of American trucks, and it’s exciting to see Americans appreciating the engineering behind Scania in this vid. We definitely have something in common when it comes to style and tech. Bruce, you’re doing an amazing job showcasing this connection. Keep up the great work!

As a retired Scania Master Tech. I am intrigued by the lifting rear drive axle. That is some clever engineering. In the UK we normally have a mid lift 'pusher' axle (that also steers) just ahead of the drive axle or a rear lift 'tag' axle like your 144. I am pretty sure that space we normally use for our Tachographs will be wired to accept the US ELD system as we also use encrypted connections to the gearbox output. Seals are not even needed. I used to calibrate electronic (like in your 144) and digital tachographs ... But lastly PLEASE do not get too daft with the 'Americanisation' You are after all demonstrating European design. The one of the reasons is because in maritime shipping, everything about the mass and weight of the truck plays on the cost, that is the higher,wider and heavier the truck, the more expensive the shipment.

There are a few of these running here in the UK under STGO3 regulations, you should do weight tests there in the US. In case you do not know, STGO can carry loads up to 150,000kg (330,000Ib) with max axle weight of 16500kg (36,500Ib) over a minimum of 6 axles. There are not many US trucks that can pull that from the factory.

The only downside might be the lack of support in the US. Adoption demands you have shops that can repair it. In the US, long hauls do 100,000 miles a year, a lot more than any truck in the UK will drive in that time.
@jim.franklin5 күн бұрын
@ I'll there would need to be support services available and will take time to establish effectively. With regards 100,000 miles a year - not sure why you think that doesn't happen in the UK, trucks are kept running or operators lose money. Trucks can easily do 400 miles a day inside the UK or by crossing into Europe. Many trucks I have driven that are 3-5 years old and have 400,000 miles or more on the clock right up to one with 720,000 miles at just under 5years old.

If you want your truck to heat up faster , turn AC all the way to HIGH QUICK. It will engage motor braking even parked but it will heat up like in 5-10min. To deactivate just lower your AC temperature. Auxiliary heating will not heat up you coolant.. Always turn off Auxiliary heater before starting the truck.. You can break it with voltage surge from alternator..

Aux heater has three modes for heating. You can set it up so that it only heats cabin (first button press) but if you press heater button again you can choose only engine or then you can also set it up to heat both. Whit (maybe optional) electric heater whic power connectors are behind lower grill you also have options to heat up either engine or cabin.

I know that americans love their stacks and chrome, but please do not do too much with this truck. One of the advantages with the eurotrucks is the noise level, and not sitting in extra noise all and every day is healthy in the long run. We had both standard exhaust and stacks on different trucks where I used to work in Norway, and even if the stacks did not make too much noise, it was quite a difference from the standard ones. I drove a lot on steep roads, and sitting 5-10-15 minutes up or down a hill (or inside a tunell) listening to the stack just behind the cab was not my preference.

I’d like to see a side by side comparison of a similar spec American truck ( except for engine differences ) Show it hauling a trackhoe or something of weight and value. Figure out a route and time the American truck, then throw the same load and route at the euro truck and time it. See if you can’t compare fuel consumption too.
@Pesmog7 күн бұрын
That's exactly the sort of thing that they need to do. 👍 I think they also need to do some simulated city driving as well, as that is where a cabover will shine.
@terryteed19037 күн бұрын
To be honest, I think the American truck would pull a sled better as the Scania is optimised for cleaner running, so it will be choked to hell. Having driven both old and new scanias, the newer ones feel underpowered even though they have higher HP.

I think it will blow your mind. This truck (and all 3 axle euro semi trucks) is able to haul 97,000lbs all day, every day without any special permits or anything. That's a standard load across Europe. It's designed to haul a lot more. I don't think you have roads out there that this truck can't kick ass on. The places we go with these things.. I'm not sure you guys would be comfortable taking a pick up truck and trailer. Watching Bruce and all the American guys who have been up close and personal with his old 4 series... It really does highlight how much more advanced euro equipment is. It's funny though because driving a Pete is on my bucket list as it is for any European truck driver. I don't care how much better euro trucks are... The style and class of an American rig is unbeatable.

@DageLV6 күн бұрын
unfortunately its not possible. USA has banned euro trucks because of competition. They dont want american trucks to be in competition with euro trucks, therefore they banned them, but as for safety checks etc, unless he massively modifies it, like starts welding things to it, doing things to its frame, it should pass with flying colours.
@Z38_US6 күн бұрын
Afaik long nose trucks are so common in the US because the US does not limit a trucks length the same way the EU does and cabovers are mainly so popular because of Europes much tighter streets which isn't really an issue in the US in most parts. Long-Nose trucks are also more aerodynamic helping with fuel efficiency and more comfortable to drive and to work on because of their longer wheelbase and engine you can get to much easier. The US has not banned Euro trucks because of competition, many US companies used to make cabovers back in the day which faded out in favour of long-nose trucks because they just work better for the US, there is no point in selling something that doesn't have a market which is why you rarely see cabovers in the US.
@Z38_US6 күн бұрын
@@DageLV EU trucks are not banned because of competition, there just isn't much of a market for cabovers in the US for various reasons I outlined in my other reply here if you are interested. Also another aspect I forgot to mention is safety is worse in cabovers, because trucks in the EU can only go up to 56 mph they are built to be safe up to that speed. In the US however a truck can go as fast as 80 mph which is a huge difference if your truck is not designed with this speed in mind, especially in a cabover.
@DageLV5 күн бұрын
@@Z38_US no. They are effectively banned. To get european truck in usa, it needs to be atleast like 21-25 years old, to import a truck, the tax is insane meaning its a LOT more expensive to buy euro truck than domestic truck in usa, this tax was made so high to promote domestic market, aka fear of competition. The aerodynamics... honestly that just seems like a cope. merican trucks in no way are aerodynamic, the cargo isnt aerodynamic either. The cabovers usa did make were crap tho. So sure, its possible that happened, they made crap noone wanted, people associated cabovers with the crap they themselves made and didnt want it. Same as what happened with round abouts, usa made traffic circles, which are horrible, so now they dont have any roundabouts which are in every way immaginable better than traffic circles and better than intersections in most cases (mostly except their footprint) Safety, id say eurotrucks are safer than usa trucks due to fewer blind spots. There are countless videos of american trucks just ignoring a car right in front of em etc. That stuff doesnt happen with eurotrucks. And yes, if you literally cant see whats in front of you, thats a massive safety flaw. ps. euro trucks are more powerful engines and more fuel efficient

The removable splash guards on the rear axles are mandatory in Europe if you drive without a trailer (because of splash water). As soon as you have a trailer attached, you actually have to remove them, otherwise they will break over time. Especially on such a nice truck with painted covers, I would always remove them.
