2013 with 189,000 started leaking a few weeks ago. watched a hundred videos and decided on going over the top of the engine. bought all the tools that were needed but went with my 5/16" ratcheting combo wrench to remove because everything was so tight could barely move around. got all three bolts off (upper bolt closest to passenger fender you'll need to leave in pump and put in new pump on install) and took pics of pump and where the rotation was lined up to put new one in same spot. WHEN TAKING OFF PRACTICE PUTTING BACK IN RIGHT AWAY 2-3 TIMES. once new pump is prepped put back in and be careful of that pick up and screen thingy that sticks out, wiggle pump and should go back in fairly easy. took an hour and a half and i took my time and was patient. kept saying these three bolts aint gonna beat me out of $500! Good Luck and let it cool off first. cover engine with padding or thick blanket for comfort.

@@williammullens63 I guess, but in reality an electric vacuum pump mounted around the radiator area would have made more sense i think, a lot of german vehicles use electric water pumps, vacuum pumps, due to compactness and durability.

Same with my 2016. No trouble reaching from the top, laying over the engine. I saw other YT vids calling for 89 inch-pounds on the 8mm bolts but not enough room to squeeze a T wrench in I went with what I call very tight plus a quarter turn. Sprayed everything clean of old oil leakage so can monitor for a few days or so and confirm no new leaks.

I had this leak, burnt oil smell from oil dripping on the manifold. I replaced the vacuum pump with a new motorcraft one. The leak didn't stop. About 2 months later, the new vacuum pump failed. Had the new vacuum pump replaced with a new-new motorcraft one. The leak didn't stop. About 2 months later, the new-new vacuum pump failed. Replaced the new-new vacuum pump with a new-new-new Ford one. And replaced the valve cover gasket at the same time to see if that was the leak. The leak is now worse, it now smokes from dripping on the manifold. Raided the pantry and strapped an empty tin can to catch the leaking oil from burning on the manifold. $2 and no more burnt smell, no more smoke. And I ate the beans. Currently looking for the right tree to trash this piece of crap into.

This worst thing about this leak is how close it is to the turbo which gets hot enough the burn the oil residual from the leak. It will smoke and that some of that smoke gets drawn into the cabin. I had Ford dealership to repair my leak and after "4" attempts to repair the leak, they change that now it is my turbo oil line that is now leaking. They want $2k to repair the leak and since I have 128k miles on this engine, it only make sense to replace the engine not just the turbos for $4k. My 2015 F150 still looks new and I service it regularly. It will cost me $11k to put a new engine. Hopefully all issues with the leaks will be addressed permanently. I just can't afford a new truck.

The fact that this part and its design was approved as this engines pump booster says all we should need to know about ford and their disregard for customer satisfaction and product quality. I assume their negligence is a result from decades of success and higher sales than all the others.... They knew and ignored the fact that even with the o-ring it still needed gasket sealant in two spots due to not lining up and sealing properly yet didn't care nor did they ever take accountability for said design flaw. How can I tell if it’s leaking from the oil pump or the valve cover gasket? I know it should be obvious but sometimes it’s not. Just curious your thoughts? Thanks btw I’m a new subscriber 👍

Would you use just silicone or something like Permatex 82180 Ultra Black Maximum Oil Resistance RTV Silicone Gasket Maker?

Vacuum pump took me shorter time than changing 3 spark plugs. The location is intimidating.

I have a 2017 Ford Transit with a 3.5 ecoboost with 221000kms. I have a Cylinder 6 misfire. I've put a new ignition coil on it,I've changed the spark plug,I've even changed the ignition coil to another Cylinder to see if that Cylinder would act up coil seems to be good. I've changed the low fuel pressure pump valve on the bottom of the engine. I've changed the top fuel pump no change. Can you please help me ?

This is much more difficult of a job when the engine is in the truck!! The clearance to the firewall is not that big. Took 1.5 hours for me

Is it always the pump? I replaced mine 13 months ago when I did my transmission and it's leaking already. I thought maybe I didn't use enough silicone.

Awesome video. Fixed my problem. But I have a slight misfire under a load, like if I am going 40mph and shift to 3rd or 4th gear and let the boost build up then it slightly pops and bumps like a misfire. Every once and awhile it puffs a black smoke out when it pops. And it doesn’t always misfire only after long trips. Any idea off top of your head?

Hey Ryan, don’t know if you fixed this issue yet, but if you have an eco boost check out 1. The intercooler weephole mod - consists of drilling a hole in your intercooler (I know I know) it is a common solution to this problem. You can find plenty of videos on it. 2. Your Spark plugs - I had this same issue and found a crack in the porcelain of two of my spark plugs and when I replaced them it went away immediately.

What if you replace and it still leaks? Used ford brand oem vacuum. I used high grade silicone around the edge of the pump instead of just the two spots that ford puts it on

Might want to pull it back off or tighten the bolts more. Just did mine and the filter stem fell off in the motor. Not fun, didn’t know it could come loose from the pump.

What causes the vacuum pump to go bad I’ve had it replaced twice by a ford dealership they charged me a lot of money what they said what caused it to go bad was a leak of oil gas and water which made a mixture of sludge that that clogged up the vacuum pump it cost me $1100.00 the first time I took it in and $780.00 the Cecil’s time I took it in I didn’t pay for the labor the second time the first time it was replaced it didn’t last a month I want this on to last a while what can be done to stop this issue

I have a customer with a 2017 Expedition 3.5 Eco. Rear main seal leak. Replaced it about a year ago and it looks to be a repeat offender. Anything common about this rear main failing and causing a leak that you know of?
