I own a first gen Ecoboost F150. Bought it used in 2018. Had the water pump and coolant hose replaced later that year. The quick connect started leaking again last year so o bought the bypass kit from Pegasus Racing and installed it. I haven’t had a coolant issue since.

LOL... anybody else pick up he said "Stealership"? Firstly, awesome video and explanation and appreciate your time to help others. Cam Phaser replacements are your life huh? I've had them replaced twice on my 2018 F150 at only 80,000 miles. Got home today with a water "gusher" coming from the front of my engine @ 84000 miles. Haven't yet confirmed but suspect water pump. Noticed in your links to parts under the EcoBoost recommendations it states "Sell it". Pretty sure that's what I'm going to do. Done with Ford. Up side is it is a Gen2 so not the hassle to change out WP as with the 11 - 16s.

I'm never buying the eco again. I know the 5.0 has some issues but I have tried so hard to do all the right maintenance and any repairs needed as soon as they pop up. Well the truck has already needed a water pump and now both turbo coolant fittings need replacing. It only has 70k miles on a 2014. Not to mention all the other typical ford problems like water leaking into the cab from 2 different places. I have a shitbox early 2000s nissan and it never leaked anywhere. idk I love buying American but we used to earn it with quality product. Doesn't seem to be that way anymore.

Great video mason 👍👍 Did you say "stealership" 🤣 sounded like it I have a 2019 expedition, has a slow leak, so slow I can't tell where it's coming from. Now that I have some ideas I'll go looking for it and get it done. Replacing the radiator fan assembly while I'm at it, the driver side was all of a sudden very loud and I found that the fan itself has some shaft play, I'm guessing it's causing a vibration and loud jet engine sound bc of that play. Might as well Geterdone

Mayson….I noticed that your the 2nd Ford dealership tech that has an Amsoil sticker on your tool box. I’m pretty close with a local Ford dealership tech in my area, and recently I’ve been talking to him about my 2019 F-150 with the 5.0. I asked him for his thoughts regarding the proper oil to use in it, because as we know Ford recommends motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend….which is what I’m currently using. I’m in the Houston area and with our hot humid climate and stop and go traffic….he recommends to use nothing but 5w-30 synthetic blend or pure synthetic at the minimum. He then preceded to tell me that he personally only uses Amsoil in his 23’ mustang GT with the 5.0 coyote motor and that his 5.0 is absolutely silently quiet at an idle. Before he switched over to Amsoil he was using the factory recommended Motorcraft synthetic blend oil….but after he switched over to using Amsoil….his 5.0 became noticeably quieter. So I would like to ask - what’s your thoughts & experience using Amsoil?
@ivanvarela3215
@ivanvarela3215 10 ай бұрын
Synthetic blend is not as good as full synthetic. Also, I recommend doing oil changes at around half the stated mileage in the owner's manual, quote Dave Auto.
@ivanvarela3215
@ivanvarela3215 10 ай бұрын
Also using thicker oil damages the engine a lot more when you start it up. Use the factory oil weight of 5W20. The advice of using thicker oil does not apply to engines made in the lasts 35 years, it's advice from the 1960s. Don't crack good blocks like my dad would.

I've been leaking coolant for 25k over 5 years always said screw it. Just found out the coolant dripping out of the quick fitting off the reservoir (if that's where your leak is like mine) can cause problems for your driver side turbo 😬 just moved up on my priority list.

@@SpasticTom I don’t remember why I was watching an EcoBoost video, I have a 5.0. I have fixed all my leaks for now. The water pump was making a lot of noise but only leaking a tiny bit. The block heater was the big problem, I installed a new one and that pretty much fixed it. I also replaced the upper and lower hoses, the y pipe, water pump, idler, both tensioners and belts, oil cooler, the O ring at the overflow bottle, the oil pan gasket, spark plugs and an air filter. It’s like a new truck, that is if new trucks had rotted out rockers.

@DarthJuice-pj7kp

Ford uses both oil and coolant for the turbos on a 3.5 Ecoboost so it's entirely possible that it could be oil dripping. As for safety, as long as the leak is relatively slow and you keep the fluids topped off, I see no reason why you couldn't keep driving it.

bro its like you are in my head because i was just looking for my coolant leak yesterday. mine must be hitting my ehost because you can smell it when its hot. i also noticed coolant near my oil pan. so maybe its going down the turbo line onto the oil pan? also some googling pointed towards maybe the heater coil? i smell it most when the heater is on.

I don’t know if you’re allowed to say it on this channel but what’s the average cost if you’re out of warranty to have all this work done cab off etc. would love to know

Ford should have a recall on this issue with coolant leaks....but oh..no...they make too much money off the repair. It's sick. I have been waiting for mine to be looked at by the dealer, they are so booked up it's 10 days before I could get an appointment.

I used to be a tech. Worked for Ford, CJD, and Toyota. And unfortunately when it comes to recalls it’s not a matter of “fixing a known problem”. In all the trainings on how a recall is handled it goes off of cost. They don’t care about how much they make on repairs either that’s not even a fact on a mass recall. They look at how many injury lawsuits will cost VS how much it would cost for a recall. And unless the cost of the lawsuits is over a certain dollar amount compared to the amount to recall whatever part it is they won’t issue a recall. Even more messed up is that if there is injury’s or worse but it’s cheaper to pay the settlement money and force an NDA then that’s what they will do.

My 2015 Expedition water pump just failed out right. I noticed my plastic coolant tank under the hood one day was full and all of sudden level was going down fast!!. then a grinding noise under the hood!, I drove to mechanic shop the next day and by the time I pulled into the shop and put in park noticed coolent fluid dripping on the floor big time. Mechanic said I was lucky to make it to his shop when I did, I had to leave at the mechanic and do an emergency repair. New water pump, new thermostat and new serpentine belt, $986.0 . When I went back home I noticed coolent spots on my driveway also on my usual parking space at work. The problem is during winter, I go to work when its dark and leave work when its dark, I did'nt notice the leaks on the floor. That could have been catastrophic if I was driving a long distance on a highway..

Wait, so 2017+ no coolant fitting issues? So basically, it's water pump only? Did i understand this correctly??

had a 2014 3.5 with 78k miles I put on it. had a 2017 3.5 I put 123k on it. have a 2022 with 3.5 and have 23k on it. NO coolant leaks EVER. however 2 cam phaser fixes on the 2017, cam phasers with the gen 2 ecoboosts is the video you should be making.

My truck is in for the turbo fitting repair. Do most ford dealer shops replace the other fittings, lines oil supply filter without being told? Or do you have to be specific when bringing truck in? I tried mentioning to the counter service guy. He didn't seem to be listening to me and not be very informed. I watched your video and want all the nearby parts fixed while they have the engine torn apart. I understand alot of customers think they know everything but it seems not all ford techs or shops are the same. Wish I could bring my truck down to you! Not looking forward to paying thousands for a coolant leak.

New manifolds…$4000. Thank goodness for drivetrain warranty because I would be doing this repair myself before I paid $4000 for new manifolds! The water pump took 3.5 hours on my 2013 f-150 and it really sucked with all of the charge air pipes!

Would a water pump leak cause loss of coolant AND white-ish smoke from the tailpipe when rapidly accelerating or starting from cold?

Do yourself a favor if you are replacing the cooling lines for an older ecoboost, and order aftermarket ones that don't use the Ford connectors. Also, don't use the OEM manifolds, they'll just break again. Get the aftermarket ones that use ALL of the stud locations.

$3500-$6500. Might as well just throw in a rebuilt that has new/rebuilt turbos on it. I have 353000 original miles on my 2016 Expedition 3.5L Ecoboost. I'll run it till it blows up. Just doesn't make sense to drop a penny expensive hardware at 353000 miles. Plugs/i.e. basic stuff, I'll keep maintaining.

Great information Mason, but these costs are exactly why people are leasing vehicles, instead of purchasing them. As a mechanic I agree with you but broke as$$ people can't afford to dump $3000-6500 into their vehicles which is about 50% of the value of the vehicle. This said if you don't have extra money or wrench yourself get the naturally aspirated V8.

Its stupid to not replace both considering all the work u have to do to get to them. Thats like needing to change a water pump on a later model ohc 4 cyl and not replacing the the timing belt,tensioner and idler y u have everything apart.
