This is missing the biggest misconception that the 1.8 is the superior engine. The NA6 1.6 secretly better in every way, especially when combined with a Vlsd. Wow what a combo!

Idk about in Miatas, but the ABS ice mode thing almost killed Randy Pobst in an FC RX-7 at Road Atlanta. He stood on the pedal and it didn't budge a millimeter. He told the story on VINWiki.

RE: the question as to whether you need a bunch of performance parts to run on a track: The stock Miata is capable of much higher performance than the average driver realizes, if they haven't tried track driving. I recommend a novice try the track before deciding what modifications will improve their Miata. My first time I ran on generic M+S tires and had no problem with the car. I was the weak link, in spite of having 30 years + of annual pursuit driving track training days. Although there are really great, experienced track drivers out there, an awful lot of drivers haven't yet learned how to get the most out of their car as it is. No need or reason to spend money improving a car that's faster than you. See what it and you can do and spend the money on a quality helmet and track fees until you know what you need. FM's You Tube Videos are a wealth of information that will help speed up the learning process and help you decide what you need.

I did have a timing belt skip a tooth. Was all running fine for about 20k miles suddenly lost a lot of power, tried absolutely all other tests. Then checked the cam-belt and it had indeed skipped a tooth,.You could even see where on the belt it jumped due to wear.

ABS is GREAT in autocross, particularly in the wet. Does FM still sell their shock tower brace?

It can handle more power, but if you're talking from a stock power perspective, my guess is running through that extra gear is objectively more fun?

shorter ratios so you can stay in powerband better, also all 6-speed cars in the US came with the 3.9 rear so that the 6thg gear is longer than 5th on the 5 speed with the 4.3 diff.

I do t know what rear differential I have it’s an lsd on a 99 I don’t think it’s a stock lsd tho has only a tiny hole to see in side the diff when pulled

Would you say 6 speed is better for drifting?

The ABS fuse story. Your friend may also have lost the ability of the electronic rear bias making it much easier to lock the rear. So not as simple as comparing to a correctly bias non abs system.
