Agreed. I'd like to say how great it would be to see what the 414 will look like when it's finished. Something tells me it won't be finished because FSW will always be making improvements and that is a good thing. Only the wing de-ice boots are animated, but the tail de-ice boots are coming soon.

The C414A came with a TSIO-520-J and if upgraded by RAM it’d be an NB, never seen any other than RAM V liquid cooled. Ceiling is FL300 but due to RVSM the most you can go is FL290. Keeping the engines cooled in that thin air is touchy, and the plane’s sweet spot for operating between FL200 and 230 and you’ll NEVER get above 210 KTAS, so 230 is unrealistic. In the low teens 190 is typical. Of course all depends on power settings and temperature. There is one liquid cooled only by RAM called the RAM V. All the other RAM’s (IV, VI, VII) are air cooled. I own and fly a 1980 C414AW RAM IV, have flown the C421 (GTSIO-520-L and N) which are geared. Any liquid cooled engine will not have opening in the engine cowl. In any piston aircraft, especially these big bore ones, slow and gentle throttle movement is necessary for engine longevity. On take off, I apply the brakes, mixtures forward (after start up lean for smooth running and engine longevity), throttles to about 1700 RMP, mixtures rich, fuel pumps on, and throttle up slowly. Brake release depends on runway length. If operating on a shorter runway,(calculate accelerate stop distance) you’ll want full power before releasing the brakes (if rwy is not slick). On long runways I throttle up to full power slowly with no brakes reaching VR at about 95 kts. You can pull the Fuel Flow meter circuit breaker instead of turning off the battery. For the backup extension, you have to pull it very hard…but in sim that doesn’t matter, and I’ve had to pull it once. Once pulled you have to have the hydraulic fluid purged to get rid of the nitrogen, and fill up the fluid again as well as recharging the Blow Down bottle. Takes about 4 hours to do. I have a few thousand hours in Twin Cessnas among other corporate jets, and turboprops. Overall a good video.

The original manual with the 414 for MSFS stated the engine was liquid-cooled but that was incorrect and changed in the manual after the video was made. I kept some parts of the video applicable to the sim and not real-life. Just like not mentioning RVSM. RVSM isn't really observed in MSFS and on the opposite end of that spectrum, VATSIM controllers have assigned FL420 to aircraft in the United States without knowing or being aware of why FL420 is not a usable altitude (although, I have flown at FL420 once). I flew 404s and 421s and never went above the low 20s (in the 421). The fastest TAS observed in level flight was 225 at FL240 (I think, that was over 20 years ago). When this video was made, working circuit breakers were not a thing but I'm curious to see if pulling the fuel flow CB will reset the fuel computer in the sim. Thanks for the lengthy and detailed comment! My twin Cessna time reached around 500 hours when I left to fly corporate jets almost 20 years ago and I've been at the same job since that time.

If they bring the aircraft over to fs2024 I might pick it up and do a bit of re-living my youth haha.

@@thecorporatepilotdad I look forward to future videos of the 414AW. It’s my mostly flown aircraft and has been for a while. After watching this video I’ll be trying to put some of this new learning into practice. Here’s some things I’ll be working on so maybe these will give you topic ideas. 1. I struggle controlling the cabin heating. I need to find the right balance between using the 2 heating systems and the air conditioning. How/when do you use these 3 systems? My passengers would appreciate some tips on that ;) 2. In the video you mentioned “high altitude flying” above 20,000 ft. I’ll be working on properly setting cabin pressure, adjusting cabin temperature, setting the engine mixture, working the icing systems etc. as I ascend and then how to safely fly at high altitudes. Can the 414AW be taken to the top of the Himalaya Mountains? 3. I’ll be looking into failure scenarios and how to use some of the little-used systems to mitigate the issues. For example you mentioned the purpose of the dump levers so I’ll be playing with loss of cabin pressure or oxygen failures. Maybe something with fuel flow and needing to use the aux fuel pumps or adjusting the fuel tank levers. Thanks and good luck.

@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad 2 жыл бұрын
Think of pressurization like this: Air is constantly being pumped into the cabin from the compressor side of the turbo charger when the system is on and the pressurization air controls below the yoke are pushed in. A controller opens and closes a valve in the back of the airplane to pressurize the cabin as much as it can without going over the maximum differential pressure (under normal conditions). If the valve closes, air is trapped and the cabin will blow up like a balloon. Opening the valve causes the air to leak out of the cabin quickly and the pressure inside will quickly match the outside pressure and the differential will then be 0. Think of differential pressure as a sealed bag of potato chips. At the top of a mountain where the pressure is less, the pressure inside the sealed bag didn't change from a near sea level altitude and the bag will blow up like a balloon as a higher and higher altitude is reached.

@@thecorporatepilotdad Thank you for taking the time to explain this. Excellent. I've been flying the Steam Gauge King Air of late and the pressurized alarm keeps going off on me as I cannot read that dial. The manual that comes with it explains it but the example they give appears to be wrong. I heard a real pilot, like yourself, on youtube say that you set it 1,000 feet above your cruise altitude. So do I use the inner dial to set it? I finally found the gauge that reads the plane's PSI which is suppose to be 6.81, so if it gets over 1,000, it sends an alarm. This is for the King Air, not 414. I love this aircraft--looks like a little airliner on the ground, and the front office has steam gauges. I'd say this, the Vision and the Hondjet have been my favorite (Xbox) add-ons. When I fly them in the sim, I feel the same comfort I feel in real life flying, where under light sport the weights are limited to 1320# but many have enhanced instruments and some have autopilots. I always felt taking real life flight lessons that my sim experience, which started with FS2 in 1984 the same year I was given my first real life flying lesson over the Napa Valley, helped because it gave me a pilot's edge and instrument scan, and my CFI's told me the most important way to fly was by looking outside the cockpit vs. fiddling with entry of flight plan information every few seconds during flight, instead of before a flight. Since I flew only for recreation only once or twice a year I'd file a flight plan, if I was going to spend the night somewhere. I quit flying a few years ago after I broke my leg, not so much that I cannot fly, I worried about the risks of it braking again during severe turbulence rendering me incapable of landing the rental. So I've settled for simming, and letting Jesus or one of his appointed human angels handle stick and rudder when I fly commercial. I've always felt closer to being a bird with steam gauges than electronic displays, lol....

Q1. @13:45 is the 'Cool/Circulate' switch only to activate cool air from the AC or is it required for the warm air to enter the aircraft when the three larger dials have been turned up too? Q2. Does the Cabin Heat' dial do anything if the 'Cabin Heat' switch is in the down/off position? Thank you
@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad 2 жыл бұрын
1. The cool switch position activates the AC compressor to make conditioned cold air. Circulate turns on two blowers to move the air. The cabin fan switch can be used to circulate air as well. When the cabin heat switch is turned on, the blower automatically goes to low (which is shown in the video). Of the 3 knobs in front of the co-pilot, the knob to the left works independently of the other 2 knobs. The cabin heat knob controls the gas heater. The LH and RH WARM knobs cool the incoming air at the wing root and no fan is required to receive that air. Those knobs control the butterfly valves on the wing root. If those knobs are turned to the cold position, the valves open and allow more ram air to pass over the heat exchanger in the wing root to cool the incoming air more. That same air that is being cooled by the ram air is used to pressurize the cabin. 2. If the cabin heat switch is not turned on, the gas heater won't be on. So, the very short answer is no, it shouldn't.

@@thecorporatepilotdad So in 1. If the LH and RH warm knobs are turned to the left and the Cabin Heat switch is ON but the leftmost knob (CABIN HEAT) is also turned to the left, will cool air come into the aircraft provided the AFT and FWD are pulled open? So at cruise, I can switch AC off and control cabin temperature just with Cabin Heat switch and the AFT and FWD dials? I'm asking as I'm struggling to maintain a constant temp at cruise.. 2. Does the CABIN HEAT switch on the left panel do the same as the CABIN HEAT dial? PS A huge thank you for putting this up. This product deserves this!
@thecorporatepilotdad

@@manic_miner 1. In theory, yes. Since temperature (and humidity) decrease at altitude, AC is not needed, and the air needs to be heated. The LH and RH warm knobs could be producing warm air regardless of knob position, but less warm air even in the cool position. When I flew 400 series Cessnas these knobs didn't get used a lot. On nice days the cabin fans would be used, AC in the summer on the ground and at low altitudes, and in the wintertime and at altitude if needed, the heat was turned on. 2. The cabin heat switch turns on the gas heater. The amount of heat provided by the heater is controlled by the cabin heat dial.

That is a bit of a controversy. The manual on FSWs website shows the TSIOL-550 which is a liquid cooled engine. The RAM converted airplanes are mostly TSIO-520s. However, after doing more research, there is an upgrade for the TSIO-520 to a TSIOL-550 but that engine is only an option if a previous RAM conversion has been completed on the aircraft. The FSW manual shows 325 HP engines but the TSIOL-550 is a 350 HP engine. I talked to FSW about it in an e-mail earlier today. The stock 414s are TSIO-520s. I also flew 421s and they had GTSIO-520s with 375 HP per side.

How is one engine performance? Is that managed well in MSFS?
@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad 2 жыл бұрын
I would say it is good. There is a large degradation of aircraft performance on one engine and the aircraft yaws toward the dead engine as it should. Normally, on one engine, the ball is kept 1/2 its width off center. To do so, a massive amount of rudder is required and the airplane flies very crooked through the air. That is probably a MSFSism but the rest of the single engine characteristics are there.

Radar altimeter. It displays height above the ground by sending a pulse down to the ground and back up to the airplane, kind of like sonar. It’s not really used for anything more than reference on approaches by bugging the number to the left of number in parentheses in the minimums section on the approach plate. If doing an ILS approach that goes to 200 feet above the ground, 200 would be bugged on the radar altimeter. However, the barometric altimeter is used for height to define minimums on approaches. I did a livestream in the 414 where the radar altimeter is covered. My livestreams are rare so it is easy to find toward the end of the video on the approach.

This panel is the one where you select for example the source of your NAV mode (NAV1/NAV2). Other liveries shows that panel but not the ones with the GTN750 incorporated. Does it mean that such panel is no more necessary because its functionalities are included in the GPS ? If Yes, regarding NAV1 and NAV2 I can indeed have 2 NAV's (with active and stby frequencies) but I have only one CDI instrument. So how can I switch the CDI source from NAV1 NAV2 ? Thanks in advance.

I responded to this on the other video just in case you don't see it there, the short answer - There isn't a way that I can see to switch between Nav 1 and Nav 2 with the TDS or GTN 750 units. The HSI is always coupled to the AP but there should be a way to couple the AP to the 2nd VOR to the left of the HSI.
@FlyingVince72

@@thecorporatepilotdad Hi ! I will answer also to the other video but I've found the solution. First you have a CDI for NAV/VOR 2 (at the left of the ADF - Radio Magnetic Indicator) which is linked to NAV2 in the second (right) screen of the GTN750. To make it possible for your autopilot to follow NAV2 you have to push the CDI icon on that right screen, and you will then switch from GPS VLOC2. If you do the same with the CDI icon on the first (left) screen, you switch from GPS VLOC1. Of course after such manipulation, both screens indicate the same CDI source.
