Hi Garrett! I’m a retired Air Force pilot and now a Southwest Airlines Captain. My sons are 15 & 16 years old and they want to fly for SWA also but the civilian route is so different from my military path. Your video was awesome to learn how the current system works to build time and ratings. Thanks so much brother!! I hope you come fly for us soon. 🇺🇸👍

I almost bought into Embry-Riddle because it seemed like THE school to go to for flight training and aviation, but I quickly realized that I had great other options as well! I’m at San Jose right now which I know isn’t as recognized and glorified as other aviation schools, but I love it! Plus the in-state tuition makes it much more affordable for me 😂. I just started flight training so I have a looonnnggg way to go but I’m already really excited about my future as a pilot

I'm a little older, 33, but have money saved up and was wondering which direction to take to get to the airlines. It was refreshing to hear the path to becoming a pilot from a US point of view, especially given the concept of regional and mainstream (is that what they call it?) airlines. Nice video! Quick question/comment. I do agree with you that the degree aspect is becoming obsolete on the regional level, but many mainline/legacy carriers still require or “strongly prefer” at least a 2 year degree. Though not wasting your time on college to get into the regionals as fast as possible sounds appealing, you still do need to consider what is required in progressing your career. I think it always just depends on what kind of flying you want to do, but it is just something to think about.

Not sure if you know this but here in Sweden, education is free. Yes, there is free education to become an airline pilot with a b737 rating and an option to also get a ppl in the course. There is even 2 schools, one in Lund and one in Västerås. I know EASA have different requirements but I think the minimum flight hours is 200 so you get that plus they have agreement with both Norwegian airlines and SAS so you basically have hours as an apprentice first officer there as well, during school and if you arent a complete moron, you will land a job there, if they survive corona. They take 20 students each year. One is starting in the spring and the other in the fall. All you need to pay for is a medical, an pilot aptitude test, a complete degree for your upper secondary school (we start at age 7 and go 9 years Foundation school, then 3 years of upper secondary so kind of college). I used to work as a cabin crew and im going to work my grades up besides running my business because it is just too good of an opportunity to pass down on.

What does the pay look like directly out of ATP? I graduated with a double major from a competitive business school. I currently work for a Fintech company called SoFi. I’m looking to get out of the Fintech industry and completely changing my path. Does having two degrees already help my chances on making it to a major airline? Any way to increase my chances to get to a major airline? Any info helps, thank you! :)

I went to ATP Flight School. Worst decision Ive made. They treat you like an item on an assembly line. You are stuck to the syllabus. And if you don't get something right away, you are left in the dust. Could have gone to a mom and pop flight school for half the cost

Kyle Havas I think they do a pretty good job. You just have to be able to learn things on your own but mostly you learn most of the things through training

My husband has worked for Piedmont as ramp/ CSA agent for since November 2014. About 2.5 years ago they came to us and said if you have certain criteria met we want to give you a nice sign on bonus and a contracted spot with us. He has been time build as a CFI/CFII and next week he goes to ATP- CTP training. What tips do you have for FO and ATP training with Piedmont? Did Piedmont pay you while at ATP- CTP course?

First of all think you for your video :) I have a quick question, I know that you said we don't need to do a bachelor degree at University to be a pilot but what is the advantage if we do it?

Tia Thenel from my understanding from reading the comments, if you don’t have an associates/bachelors then you likely won’t work for a big airline and mostly regional

Tia Thenel The advantage would be having a better chance of getting a job at a major airline. I recommend you do get a degree if your goal is to work for a major.

If you could choose between: -Attending ATP and getting to the airlines sooner, but accruing debt -Attending a 4 year university program you didn't have to pay for Which would you choose?

When can I start flight training I'm 15

You can receive a private pilot license when you are 17, but you can start the training earlier and you can do your first solo flight when you are 16. The minimum age to get a commercial pilot license is 18.
